  • Remnants and times are listed below. In this video, I explore the former Monon Railroad right-of-way through Delphi, Indiana. Most of the line was abandoned by CSX (the last owner) in the late 1980s and removed in the early 1990s. Part of the line was kept and acquired by Norfolk Southern to serve the limestone quarry on the west side of Delphi. Track still remains but hasn't been used since about 2009. This video shows footage from Pittsburg just west of Delphi, to the Deer Creek trestle that is still owned by CSX. Different parts of this video were filmed at different times of the year. This was filmed mostly in 2016 with very few 2015 shots.
    Sections of the right-of-way:
0:39 Former bridge site at Pittsburg, Indiana
1:29 Remaining rails and crossings of the right-of-way (owned by Norfolk Southern)
14:15 Rails removed but railroad bed remains
22:40 Railroad bed remains but has been turned into a trail
34:11 Abandoned Deer Creek trestle/High Bridge (owned by CSX)
    Remnants left behind:
1:37 Monon Railroad and Beltline Railroad junction (now owned by Norfolk Southern)
8:19 Bridge over a farm access lane
11:09 Loading ramp and water tank foundation
11:45 Rail fragments of the loading dock/elevator spur
13:36 Monon Railroad and Wabash Railroad junction (now owned by Norfolk Southern)
19:19 Viaduct over the former interurban right-of-way
24:06 Bridge over old State Road 25
25:29 Rails from side a spur that connected with the Monon
26:42 Bridge over Milroy Farm access lane
30:56 Part of a section house
32:36 Part of another section house
    33:08 Concrete bases from signals
34:11 Trestle over Deer Creek/High Bridge (owned by CSX)

In the photo at 35:26 you are standing exactly where the BG was standing 2 months later when the girls were recording him, parallel to the end of the last platform. And in the next photo, Libby would be standing just in front of you, slightly to the right, when she was filming him. Men, how creepy is that?!
    Great footage.

Hello, I read a 1997 Pharos Tribune online article which states that there’s an inter-urban tunnel under the Monon High Bridge. Would you happen to know anything about that? Mr. Alan Smith of the Carroll County Historical Museum is adamant that there isn’t one. I love your video, by the way. It has a mysterious yet melancholy vibe. The town looks so desolate - almost like you’re the only person left..😳😄.

Hi. I would guess not. I've never heard anything about a tunnel, though I don't know everything haha. The interurban did pass under the Monon line about a mile west of the Monon High Bridge. The tunnel-like bridge is still there. Thank you, I appreciate it! There are definitely desolate areas around there.

    Ozymandias
    BY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Hi, I watched much of this video of abandoned RR ROW of the Logansport. & EEL RR with GreAT. SADNESS & STRONG FRUSTRATION & Disillusionment ! I wonder why AGAIN. I See the wonton recklessness, and poor judgment carried out. In the USA by abandoning and complete removal of railroad track . Though in the video MUCH of this track,/rail happily is still present!!but it still broke my heart seeing it abandoned, trackage, 😮 Such activity is not fully done on the part of the railroad, they should though at least make efforts to be aggressive and keeping and expanding your customer base. because the government as well should strive to encourage And keep intact ANY Rail lines in the US, freight and passenger service. I live in an area where Conrail back in 1984 was determined to abandon and lift their tracks leaving the (few) customers They did had without the option of RAIL service. that was bad enough, but the way they did it with subterfuge and making traffic go 200 some miles in the opposite direction by putting the other track direction “ out of service, “ it should’ve gone and other shenanigans that which only infuriated them more! Fortunately, the counties affected put together a developmental agency called SETA-COG {council of government} who was smart enough to save and purchase the tracks that CONRAIL gave up on. A new short line was then to operate and lease the lines effected. In fact, this new short line has continued service. They have made it immensely profitable and making shippers extremely happy, they are a standout in short line railroads!!
If only CONRAIL 😠 18 had given the same effort this new short line has done they would still be operating this trackage. I HATE seeing abandoned rail lines with all hardware removed to be turned into trails from rails or other uses that are non-rail.. I love railroads and hate to see them lifted. I was shocked at all the rail and other hardware were completely intact especially on the.Loganton & Eel?? RR, the ties were in excellent usable condition, rails were doable, and overall they looked like they could once again have operating rail service. At least the rail lines shown in this video were still there and NOT lifted for some stupid trail use. That being. The worst case scenario. At least in this video nearly all rail and ties in the first part were present.. if it doesn’t operate anymore at least they retained the rail and right of way. I grew up with a New York Central railroad line behind our house up until 1966. 😮😢😭SADLY I do not remember it when it operated and or was in service, why I missed such a treasurable opportunity at 6/7 i’ll never know. It wasn’t until 1970. after.PENN CENTRAL did I explore, and trace where the empty ballast right away existed. Ii 18 So Continue operating, Functioning, preserving ANY rail lines in the US! Please do NOT ABANDON OR ESPECIALLY REMOVE ANY RAIL PACKAGE TO PUT IN A UN HISTORIC RAIL TO TRAIL SET UP! it’s only historic IF the railroad hardware is left intact and in place, Make effort to return them to active service again!!
