I have same model just with the 3.2k display. Unreal laptop wouldnt even hesitate if your unsure of buying it. Howver this video didn't make it clear if the laptop was in quiet, balanced, or performance mode (power button being blue, white, or red). This could see even better figures from the system due to power delivery being restricted which happens between balanced and performance mode and given rhe power button was basically white all video i can only assume he didnt actually get the fullll potential of it stats wise. Real world performance... it smashes anything and everything
@@a.90129 honestly the gunmetal look is pretty subdued. The only thing that could be seen as gamerish would be the legion logo on the cover plate. If you just keep the backlit keyboard on white I doubt people would see it as gamerish but instead see it as workstation. I just got mine yesterday and it feels great. I’ll have to tweet some setting to get longer battery life though.
@yy.189 Put a case on it and turn RGB off. I have a 4090 7 Pro (relatively similar) and you genuinely can't tell it's a beast until you hear the fans and see it work. It's just my opinion, but I daily drive it so I figured I'd share with you if you were thinking about getting a Slim, it's obviously sleeker and light for even better portability. Lenovo definitely catered to people like me who want power without it being all lit up. I just don't want someone to try to steal a $3000 laptop lol. I made it look like a crumby laptop with stickers and scratches on the case I also use a cooling pad, high powered fan to my side, and a stand at home (a case can hurt performance a little because it limits cooling) 👍🏻
Haha the intro was funny. Apart, from that you did a great job reviewing all the aspects, specifications, and functionalities of the laptop. I was looking forward to such a great informative review.
The "nipple pointer" has been reserved for the ThinkPad series, historically. It would certainly be nice to see it on a Legion. I have the 2023 non-slim model of the 7i Pro and it's awesome. Never thermal throttles, runs all my games at minimum 60 FPS on High/Ultra settings and runs completely silently in 'quiet mode,' even under sustained load. The only downside is the short battery life, but that's the case for all Intel-based gaming laptops.
“Get a laptop that feels good to use, getting a laptop with a bad keyboard ect ruins the experience” That’s such a true statement, learned my lesson going for full power at the cost of everything else and rarely used my old laptop.
Yeah a good keyboard and touchpad make a huge difference! I bought a cheap gaming laptop a long time ago and never used it on the go because the keyboard was so awful to use.
It's that 4070 that's drawing in too much power in these Can you check the max voltage of your gpu using hwinfo or smth of the like? If it's above 0.925mv, that's where your problem is
I don't think you have much to worry about in terms of thermals for gaming workloads and the 4070 is a great card for streaming. The only time it throttles are in sustained CPU/GPU workloads like video rendering or unrealistic stress tests.
The issue with Lenovo soldering one of the sticks of ram to the mobo kills it for me I really hate when companies do that, especially on a $2000 laptop.
I agree, I hate it as well. It unfortunately is the way almost all of the laptop manufacturers are doing things now. Probably cheaper and takes up less space. At least the G14 and the Legion 7i have one spare slot.
My concern was upgrading and what if the ram stick soldered on fails.. however inwas reminded that I haven't seen a ram stick fail in like 15 ish years and even then it was on desktop not a laptop and as for upgrading considering the gpubibjust don't think I'll ever need this thing to get past 32gb of ram
What about turning the laptop display off and connecting it to a 1080p monitor? I assume the GPU should have a much easier time and perform better due to driving a lower res display? Thanks and great review by the way.
@@DOSStorm Appreciate the response, what about downscaling the resolutin in-game? What would be a good resolution to downscale to without making it blurry? Would 1600 x 1000 work well? My laptop has a native resolution of 3200 x 2000 - thanks
Is it possible to lower the in-game resolution and still achieve the same performance, or will it make the game look blurry on a 3.2K panel and result in a less sharp gaming experience?
I don't have the laptop anymore but that is usually the case on non native resolutions. DLSS or FSR fixes that problem in a less noticeable way if the game supports it.
@@DOSStorm What about turning the laptop display off and connecting it to a 1080p monitor? I assume the GPU should have a much easier time and perform better due to driving a lower res display? Thanks and great review by the way.
@@Cryptolorianyes that’s correct, just make sure that the port you plug your display into is connected straight to the dedicated graphics card and not the integrated graphics (CPU) some ports can do both.
I daily drive the G14 for work and I also video edit on it. I really like the form factor and its a fast little machine for games. It has a one major flaw that sort of prevents me from 100% recommending it to other people though. The default boost profiles for the CPU are way too aggressive, and the machine will irresponsibly turbo to 4.2ghz almost constantly. So you will be sitting there and the machine will just be idle and hitting 90C+. I've had it actually it hit the thermal limit and hard shutdown a few times because of these profiles. The profiles are controlled by a hidden registry setting that can be overridden if you make an edit to the registry. I disabled boost on mine and run it at the base clock of 3.3ghz which isn't ideal but is much more reliable. BIOS updates really haven't fixed this issue for me and I think anyone buying a G14 should at least be aware of this.
Can you tell me if Lenovo Legion Slim 7 16IRH8 (82Y30021US) has only 16gb soldered RAM or one part is replaceable and I can add more RAM. What is the maximum value?
That is Gen 8 model in this video right? If so it has one free slot. Most Lenovo Legion laptops have one spare RAM slot which would support a 32GB DIMM for a total of 48GB. HOWEVER, I don't want to mislead you and they do many revisions sometimes, so I would contact Lenovo directly and ask if that is an important feature for you.
Hey! I actually don't own Cyberpunk 2077 so I didn't try it personally. If you want to get an idea of general performance, I would look up benchmarks for the RTX 4070 laptop GPU on youtube. I will say if you're going to use RT it helps out quite a bit to use DLSS in most modern titles to maintain 60FPS. If you use the quality mode I find it has little impact on visual fidelity.
It definitely gets warm if you're using it for long gaming sessions. Temps are stable and within spec and aren't "overheating" per say. Its pretty par for the course for a gaming laptop I and its not going to burn you if that is what you're asking. Unfortunately almost all laptops have the GPU and CPU directly under the keyboard, so after a few hours you will start feeling it on the tips of your fingers especially if you're a sweaty hand type of person.
One major drawback in slim 7i is one channel of RAM soldered on boad. The second channel of RAM only replaceable or upgradeable. Don't know why Lenovo is doing this !
Unfortunately it's not exclusive to Lenovo. My Zephyrus G14 is the same way and most modern laptops are like this now. I'm guessing its a cost cutting measure, but It sucks either way.
They are pretty different machines in many ways. The G14 form factor is amazing for portability but it has some major flaws that I outlined in another comment. If you just want a pure gaming laptop the Legion 7i is the way to go! However the G14 is much easier to lug around and has a better battery so overall its a better fit for me to use at work and do some occasional gaming on.
It stays pretty cool while gaming! I played on it for a few hours and never had any hitching. It really only throttles on 100% workloads like video renders. Most games aren't going to max out the CPU/GPU to where that would be an issue as long as you're not playing on top of a pillow or something.
I didn't test it with MSFS20 unfortunately sorry. Looking at some other benchmarks with a laptop 4070 it looks like it averages around 60FPS in 1080p Ultra and 50FPS in 1440p. So it should in theory play it pretty well
Fair point. 😁 However...let me clarify a few things. For one I didn't actually buy this, someone just lent me this for a couple weeks to review. I think we can all assume that most modern gaming laptops are ran at the absolute thermal limit so no performance is left on the table right? Actual heat isn't really the issue. I was just questioning the real world advantage of the i9 over an i7 when it throttles so quickly. Its still a pretty good laptop either way, but if the i7 version was drastically cheaper I would buy that instead personally. With the throttling I don't suspect the i9 is that much more performant than the i7.
@@DOSStormThanks for having the time to reply. I'm planning to buy the i5 or i7 version next month in US. For a slim Laptop maybe the i5 is the Better value. Maybe the i9 is Better suit to legion PRO than slim 7. What do you think?
Uh, that is not a work laptop, which is why it was denied the honor of an inflamed nipple and copious USB ports. But he'll always have "the Hoff", so there's that.
I didn't try it unfortunately. I will say Lenovo is known for incorporating some weird proprietary things into their devices that could make it more difficult.
I bought one and returned it. The screen is the worst thing and the only reason I returned. It's so matte that everything looks washed out all the time, impossible to watch a movie or anything and so hard on the eyes. They need a glossy screen option and this would be the best laptop ever
