The two of you are so awesome working together like this. It would be great if you did a monthly broadcast together as you go your separate ways...
Âgree I kept telling. James about plukky for years
This was fantastically informative, easy to digest and entertaining! Bravo guys! Thanks for this one!!
Great info and have been trying to find simple explanation on the figures. Cheers
Not a sailor, but after watching a few other popular (sailboat building) channels I stumbled on this one. Lots of interesting info, and entertaining (capturing) sailing content on associate channels. This one is boat-nerdy but if you can manage sitting through the many particulars it holds lots of good info.
Super job. Using experience and logic to make sense of “statistics and expert” data - data is not knowledge without experience and logic.
Hallberg Rassey has always been my dream boat..not my budget, but if the Lottery hits, thats what I'll be sitting on while I write my resignation letter ;) I love the numbers crunch and every boat I look at gets a trip to Sailboat Data so Thank you for the great deep dive, I really enjoyed it!
Loved this video.....great job guys. I own a 1996 Beneteau First 42s7 and compared the numbers as your video progressed. Thank you!
You gents are a lot of fun to watch together and always bring a smile or laugh but also some very good information, thank you...
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Thank you guys. I will use these tools to see where the Bristol 47.1, Island Packet 44.5. , Oyster 48.
Dang! Plukky sounds smart.
Excellent video. More sailors should understand these important ratios. But different sailors have different criteria. Captain Kevin of CZcams channel “Project Seawolf” was looking for a new ocean seaworthy sailboat. He wanted a sailboat with a Capsize Screen Value (a lower number is better) lower than 1.9 because he wanted to survive! He also wanted a sailboat with a Motion Comfort Ratio (a higher number is better) of 3.0 or higher because he wanted to be able to sleep! Personally, I like heavy boats, but heavy boats with a Sail Area/Displacement ratio of at least 16.
Following this series. Keep up the great stuff.
Fabulous video. Jesus. Just great. You have no idea how much time I spend searching for compact no nonsense academic explanations for these things from actual experienced sailors who relate it to how it affects us. These are things which I have always sensed and understood to an incomplete yet useful degree, but am quietly frustrated that the math offered is only the right side of the equation! Thank you for explaining how we got there! The trick is understanding the left side. For me, not being Nicola Tesla, I need a teacher.
So I’m sitting here aground in the ICW waiting for the tide to come in quite anxious but just have to be patient and wait on mother ocean to deliver. Thank God I still had internet to keep my mind off of this crazy situation. The good news is 10 minutes to the bottom of the low tide. After that I’ll be gaining.
Love Sailboat date I used that searching for my boat (Kelly Peterson 44). Great numbers on her. Love both you guy James & Plucky
Really enjoyed this.
Cool stuff!!!
Good to see you guys together.
Another marvelous Podcast utilizing the enormous knowledge of both sailor's. We are looking forward to the cat sector and are dying to hear Flunky's review.
Thank you for sharing top job
Nice comparison. Good explanation. By looking at my Irwin 34, the numbers make sense.
I did not know about the half loaded vs empty boat ratios, something to watch for. Cheers
Thanks guys...I actually learnt something technical.
Talking about SA/D and beating up wind and relating heavier displacement to getting tired of tacking is just the kind of thing I’m talking about. There is so much in that that only real sailors know. Esp w modern Genoa powered boats. Pointing ain’t necessarily fun for long.
Great primer for understanding the data in sailboatdata! Your boat list/pre 1995 data points are pretty accurate as they were available from the naval architects and the constructing yards. This era investigated also has the good fortune of maintaining their "as produced" weights in mostly there original locations. Exceptions limited to leaky teaky deck replacements (Formosa 41). Shortly after this era it is highly unlikely the numbers will remain static due to hull cored laminates below and above waterline. Aside from the HR 's you could have thrown in a JBoat or a Swan? Good luck with the Cat's chapter? Pretty damn small production performance list to choose from with successful hull AND rigs. Thanks, again.
Question for both of you but first some background.
the background:
I am an all around adventurer, i have hiked the entire AT and kayaked the entire Mississippi, i crewed an Irwin 32 across lake Erie. i am just starting to look into maybe doing the great loop on a small sailboat... I am not looking for a floating apartment, i would be quite happy camping on deck or on shore for example. I'd rather not have to deal with having a head onboard at all and the mast needs to be able to get put up by one or 2 people ideally. I would even be fine with a boat with no engine. ores are fine. i live far from water and do not drive, (i'm legally blind) so when i find a boat that is suitable and in my price range i'd fly or bus to it and start from where ever the boat is since the only way i can transport a boat is by water legally.
the question what boats would you avoid for this? what would you look for in a boat for this? also always open to more adventure ideas, thanks.
You sound like my type of guy! Legally blind? And you've done all of that? Sounds like you've got a zest for life. I'll take a minute and answer your question as best I can. Firstly, you need a head on the boat. It's a regulation in the states. You can get composting heads, like the 'air-head', but you need to have one. Also, about the mast, you'll need something with a taburnackle (that's what they call the hinge at the deck). There are various ways to get the mast up and down with one person, and finding someone to help isn't usually so hard. If nothing else you can climb a tree and use a block (that's how I got my catamaran mast down when we took to to hawaii). Start looking at boats, get on them, put the mast down and up and see if it suits you. There are a number of smaller sailboats that would be quite suitable for you, depending on your hight. Nor'sea 27, Isalnder 28, Cape dory 25, Moore 24 (my favorite). Good luck. Contact me through my website sailingzingaro.com if you'd like more help. Good luck, my adventurous brother! -J
I’d like to hear these legends thoughts on aluminium hull, lifting keep boats.
Great video guys. Pacific Seacraft still makes a round stern. I with you guys it’s wasted space.
sail on the brown trout, love it
Hey guys, Great podcast. Unfortunately I learned about all this data after I bought my boat which was the first one I’ve ever owned. Pearson vanguard 1965 and it actually has some pretty decent numbers I’m in a huge debate with my friends about whether this would be safe to go coastal cruising and I am saying absolutely yes of course nobody else is looking at numbers in reality they just don’t want me to go. So anyway I’d love your opinion if the Pearson Vanguard is a good first time out boat for coastal cruising around the East Coast to Florida East Coast of the Carolinas. May be a trip to the Bahamas from Charleston SC. Thanks so much. Top Stuff!!!😎
Love this review, excellent info about what makes a blue water cruiser easy and comfortable...but it does not address the issue of having the strongest keel as part of your formulas. I would like to know what you guys consider a 40-footer that would not get its keel not knocked off if it hit a steel 40 ft container in the middle of the Atlantic.
My experience is that a lot of commentors on cruisers forum are talking about boat they have never seen, much less sailed.
Thank you! I was enjoying it.
PS If you ever decided to make a part 2 you can consider to say something about this book Czesław Marchaj "Seaworthiness: the forgotten factor" I have learned many intresting things from it.
Thanks from Wisconsin
Hey James great seeing you guys again wondering what you think about the nauticat thanks 😊
Cats out of the bag soon.
Cheers for the post guys, very interesting and helped a lot to see your perspectives on this. I use the SBD a lot but often get confused by it all!!!
It was interesting to go through this with my Drascome Lugger!! Whilst the stats are very "Dinghy" like you can see just how stable and under powered it is, perfect for coastal cruising, especially where you have 10M tides here in the North West of the UK.
I liked the point about the ballast and bulb keels etc. I wonder though how this changes for lifting keels and also whether bilge keelers are catered for properly by the stats?
The CSR really confuses me though. I wonder if it can be trusted TBH? It seems a lot of boats are like 1.97 to 2.03 and there are a lot of boats that cruise oceans over 2.
Hey guys!! From Dauphin Island, Alabama!
Offshore cruiser where HR boats were made was serious water.
hell- yaeh. new video!
hey there! if you do newer boats try to incorporate a Kraken yacht. All the best!
I also love those yachts. Very cool boats
I’m ICED in please I will nerd out with you.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Endeavour 42.
I am curious: you did a video on the echo pilot install. but i can't find any other mention of it. (I won't deny, i watch many of, but not all of your videos). so i may have missed it.
how do you like it? would you buy and install one or recommend it? your input is much appreciated. thanks boss
One thing I should add (in defense of the Formosa), you used the 11.81 SA/Disp number from the site which used only the main and jib area of 677² and does not include the area of the mizzen sail.
But I'm still not going to win many races...
Ditto the Baba 40 came with a ketch rig, too. One solo circumnavigated with a septuagenarian the sole person aboard, circa 2016?
So did I miss the esp. Which talked about which keel was the best ??
I feel attacked...but very comfortable 🤣
Can you explain the code zero in a simplified version on your next video please cheers 🍻
I have a 44.8 gulfstar with a 6foot draft and a little taller rig. It was bilt to sail around the world. In fact it has sailed around the world 2 times. But most gulfstars are not good but this one is.
Hi Guys, Maybe lets talk about the cruising boats we RABBLE can afford... the 1972 plus builds. I believe they qualify well in your current discussion.
My boats have always been monohulls. So, I'm wondering; are catamarans boats or rafts? ⛵
Have you been hacked ? Do you contact ppl on Telegram? As far as a prize ?
Ohhh James, don't bullshit with that cat people phrase "running away from storms";) Running not going to happen, it's always going to happen and that's the whole point of your video
What's happened to this channel?.....no real sailing vlogs for what feels like months now
No Patreon updates either. I hope James is ok....
bejeebus you audio is not in sync
Yeah that's what you get when you let Plukky edit. Nothing but quality, peeeeepole! 😂
Sorry you do not make any sense to a novice! I understand because I know the definitions: but what is " loa"? what is "displacement"?to a newbie first time buyer? You are talking to yourselves not to the audience.
PS the righting moment is not applied from the waterline(re: depth of ballast 2m/1.64m) but from the "righting G" and this difference varies hugely with boat shape so 36 cm might not be significant .
PS:displacement refers to the volume of the boat under the water line and not the weight(of cause more load more displacement)
P.S. Love the beautiful coral close-up and gradual pan-away to a rock or sand or whatever for cover. Great camera control... LOL.
What up Fellows? I would like to give an opinion to buy at least 10 Tesla stocks (it is not just the cars, it is AI as well)and set on them until you retire or become rich and want to spend the money on things. But you can always take loans out on the stocks instead of selling them. Anyways the stock is going to skyrocket. Try to buy before it goes over $200 per share. Great videos I spent a lot of time watching you both and my opinion on this stock purchase is coming from lots of research and my love for you bros.
Seems like this is a repeat? Did we see this before?
