I don't know how much they want for that place, but I think it will take at least 2 or 3 times that just to clean up the vegetation to nothing about the structures. But if that is in your budget than snap it up. Just keep thinking, this is better than scrapping boat bottoms in jellyfish/ crocodile infested waters, cheers.

If you are looking for a challenge, this could be it. Lots of clean-up. Likely it will need 3-5 workmen for a while to make it livable. Hopely sooner than later. Ten years from now it may be the smartest purchase you ever made. OR It would be interesting to know why the people who lived there previously moved on. Good luck, stay safe!

Babies change everything. I held out for 13 years looking for a wife that didn't want kids as I lived on a 37' sailboat and wanted to the rest of my life. I started cruising 7 years into that timeframe. I met my wife in Tonga and she got pregnant just 3 weeks after our wedding. When he was 6 months old we sailed to Fiji and I said I need a bigger boat. I looked and looked and found a great deal on a 1985 Whitby 55'. It's a fantastic boat, maybe one of the best boats ever built, but boy did/does need work. We were saving while in the Caribbean so we could dump a lot of money into it but the virus hit and I decided to go back to my home port, Kemah, tx where I lived on my old boat for 7 years. There were some things I had missed about being in a marina during my 8 years of cruising but that wore off quickly once back. When my wife got a green card, I decided we were going to stay until she got a US passport...5 years. I didn't want to live on that boat for 5 more years in a marina so we bought a house in Colorado where I lived when I was a kid. We have been here 2.5 years and our boy is now going on 7 and entering 1st grade. We still have the boat mainly because it wasn't sellable at the condition she was in without taking a big hit and besides, I wanted to see her rebuilt. This boat deserves a good rebuild. I am slowing rebuilding her. Replaced the rigging, installed new AP. Next up electronics, then paint the deck and new cushions. Then a new prop and bottom job and we are ready to go again. That is our goal. We miss cruising, so we will be going again in a few years. We will try to keep the house and come back after finishing our around the world trip (we have to start over though). Two points: 1) you are going to miss the boat. 2) it turned out to be a great decision (although hard on me) to buy a house and adapt land life. Our boy wasn't progressing much while on the boat but he has been making great strides lately on land. We think when he is 9 he will be ready for sea-life again. I just hope the world holds together long enough for us to finish our dream.

Hey guys, are you crazy or very rich? I too have followed you for a few years and love the enthusiasm but James you are a master mariner with so much experience. This will be like first day dingy sailing for you. With 40years in construction even I would have to think long and hard. The access road alone could be north of 400,000 euro before you consider, services, the restoration and fixtures and fittings. Please make sure you have this costed properly before committing friend. If you work on the guide of 1/3rd to buy, 1/3 re to renovate and 1/3 profit when sold you won’t be far off excluding access. Good luck if you go ahead, but please do the numbers. For the same cost you could buy a60ft cat.😂

First of all. Do you know that you can for free get an old property in Italy? Yes! It’s more ore less free, if you sign up to restore it. I think it’s about 10$. Secondly. It’s really nice James. The vegetation is a simple issue. The building structures inside may be something a little larger and the unknown is also the expense and might need very deep pockets. Your roots are calling for you! Come to Norway! Your probably thinking of a spot in one of the fjords i presume. Its stunningly beautiful there!! I live in Kristiansand, in the south of Norway, on an island in the Norwegian arcipelago. Beautiful as well, but on another scale. No steap mountains but thousands of small islands and islets 🙂

James, you've continually surprised me since the backyard canal days with the cat and your hardtop fab! I would totally just find a chill place to rent and get feel for Portugal. I know Portugal has low passive income requirements for expats but me personally have been more impressed with Northern Coastal Spain from Vigo all the way to Bibao just do a road trip that way.

It has potential. You have always been trying new things and have gone on many adventures. You both are very determined and hard working, so I believe you will succeed in whatever you both choose to do. Looking forward to seeing you prosper. It certainly is a nice piece of property.

I don’t recommend this. . . A place to raise a family, is not a place for infinite projects! You’d Still be an absentee dad, lost in project after project, the land will come between you and your family. . . For Christ sake, take it easy.

I heard the river running and immediately thought, you have fresh water and hydro power, when I saw the water mill, even better a place to put the hydro power and a pump to get the water up to tanks by the buildings, this would make an awesome bnb business location, but it's a lot of work, but I know you're not afraid of some work. Don't try to live in the watermill until you've checked how high the water goes in the river when it floods.

Hopefully the property is near free because it needs everything. Roofs, plumbing, sewer, Electrical ect. But on the upside with all those nettles you can make nettles soup. It’s a real thing and delicious
