I was in Gabon about 30 years ago... The music hit me HARD... everyone dancing in streets under a full moon is permanently etched in my brain. I was actually in Gabon because I was part of the sound crew for big a Gabonaise music star ( Patience Dabney) . I really dug the west african culture ... French topless bathers at these resorts on the water... water no one should swim in but the locals did... To bathe? The contrast between the rich and the poor was amplified by the fact that I was traveling in a Rolls Royce one day, and the view out the window was POVERTY! Yet! Like I said, I danced in streets with these people that were happy to be alive despite the oppression and poverty.... I discovered Nigerian music a couple of years ago... This music felt like the grooves I was hearing in Gabon... The same "record industry" existed in Gabon back then... Street vendors... I am glad that this music is now big in the rest of the world! We all need to Dance! and Sing! ;}
