  • The QLine (stylized as QLINE), originally known as M-1 Rail by its developers and the Woodward Avenue Streetcar by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), is a streetcar system in Detroit in the U.S. state of Michigan. Opened on May 12, 2017, it runs along M-1 (Woodward Avenue).
    In December 2011, city and state leaders announced a plan to offer bus rapid transit service for the city and metropolitan area instead of light rail as had previously been proposed. Soon afterwards, M-1 Rail, a consortium of private and public businesses and institutions in the region, announced the plan for a 3.3-mile-long (5.3 km) streetcar line along part of the same route as the cancelled light rail plan, connecting the downtown Detroit People Mover to the Amtrak railway station in New Center and the proposed Ann Arbor-Detroit Regional Rail system. Quicken Loans bought the naming rights to the line, and announced the name in March 2016 ~Wikipedia

      The Motor City actually had a plan for a network of rail transit lines half a century ago. The DPM is the only part of that plan that survived; it was intended to be a circulator connecting all the lines. It will still fulfill that function if more streetcar lines are built.

    I'm happy to hear (or see) that it's back in operation after a long "corona" suspension. Btw, it's battery-powered only on some parts of the route, for aesthetic reasons, but it takes electricity from a wire on some other sections of the line.

    • @timosha21
      @timosha21  Před 2 lety +1

      That's true but its also a way to sell the tram concept to others (partially) as wiring is not very popular for most ordinary folk.

    • @mariusdufour9186
      @mariusdufour9186 Před 2 lety +1

      @@timosha21 I really don't see what de deal is with overhead wires for tramways, they really don't take up much of your view, they don't block any sun, and the poles that support the wires can be used as lampposts at the same time, or they can at least have the same aesthetic as the surrounding lampposts. I don't know where these ordinary folk have seen intrusive tram wires, but the only systems that create lots of wire clutter are old systems which suspend everything on transversal wires between buildings (no poles), which means that you need a massive web of thick wires to support the wiring over an intersection, modern systems are way less intrusive visually. If you consider the reliability, cost, and operational benefits of a regular electric tramway over a battery-powered or a dual-mode one it seems silly to me anyone would go through the trouble of digging up streets to sink rails into them but not put in some overhead wires.

    • @antoinemoorman5754

    • @mariusdufour9186
      @mariusdufour9186 Před 2 lety

      @@antoinemoorman5754 'Certain sections' sounds like a relatively small part of the line. This really does beg the question whether the added weight, complexity, and probably shorter lifetime of the vehicles (if the batteries are not easily swapped out) is worth the small saving or so-called aesthetic benefit that not electrifying a few small stretches may give you. If you're electrifying much of the line anyway, you might as well go all the way and save everyone a load of hassle.

    Besides the pretty cars, this is useless to Detroiters. It is at grade level, so it is at the mercy of everyday traffic. The only mode of rapid Transit is a subway, a dedicated, obstruction free track, or an elevated rail. This rail does not even operate in conjunction with the city or suburban buses. It cannot move any faster because of traffic and pedestrians. If a car or bus breaks down on it's tracks, it is stuck. It is less than 3 miles of track, averaging less than 15 m.p.h. speeds. I can only hope that the taxpayers will never be foolish enough to allow it to be foisted on to their rolls. Certain moneyed people and foundations wanted it, let them continue to finance it. In the meantime, when friends come to town, ride it and take pretty pictures!

    Although I love the camera work in this video a lot, no amount of flattering videos can change the fact that the Q-Line still represents an epic failure by DART and the Detroit city council to listen to the customers and taxpayers who bring them the most money; favoring instead those who can afford to live in downtown Detroit the luxury of a 2nd tourist attraction (The Monorail was the first waste of taxpayer money.) Much like the similarly built system in Kansas City.
    And, as everyone saw at 7:30, this is a line that will always be at the mercy of people parking their own vehicles (both legally and illegally) taxicab, Uber and Lyft drivers, DART busses, emergency vehicles, and near it's downtown terminus, partial closure due to special events. It's length is not enough to adequately serve people in any of the economically poor neighborhoods, it has no actual right-of-way of its own so it's slower than busses and busses are the only other form of public transportation since the greater Detroit area has zero commuter rails and never built the comprehensive rapid transit system it drew up in 1907. And, they wonder why Detroit continues to be at an economic disadvantage? Good video, but one which shows the lousy, poor-assed execution of such an expensive line. Timosha21 has created an A+ video, DART and the city council of Detroit get an F grade, however. And the Q-Line gets a grade of D only because it's electrically powered and A.D.A. accessible, otherwise this a failure of a system. 🐰

      The public in Detroit is unaware that local tax money replaces both federal and state money for public transit, unless stated on the voting ballot. All funds must be in writing or they do not exist. That is why many Detroit suburbs have lost bus service. The high cost of public transit is too much for local tax money alone. Please make this go viral for next August when a vote of NO means only the increase of the SMART property tax can legally be defeated by federal law. I Harold Leese have nothing against SMART and public transit but am very much against the public being deceived. There is no excuse for this as mass transit has so very much to offer and no doubt is most essential in cities such as Detroit. Please make my site go viral, so our leaders listen to everyone. savethefueltax.org

      @@Bedroomeyze Please post everywhere in the entire World and please make it so there are Millions of signatures. Detroit is in serious trouble with super high cost per passenger public bus service. The leaders must fill them up , so the bus systems can have money. And the voters must demand this at the voting booth by checking NO, until the buses are full making money. What is confusing is if money can be made by filling them, why a tax? Because not all essential bus service is profitable and absolutely everyone needs to be connected. Safe and affordable transportation is a basic human right as defined by USA Civil Rights and Disability laws, much the same as having clean water, food and basic shelter. I was on a Zoom call and this message is just a joke to Detroit transit leaders at this time. The August tax increase in Detroit must fail and it will take strong opposition to to this. I want no money and just want everyone to vote NO, so the leaders will get my message and respond with actions that are much needed or they must go and be replaced. savethefueltax.org
