Former Nigerian Scam Artist Speaks Out

  • “Don’t you think you’re worthy of being loved?” was the question that hooked an American woman into giving $248,800 to a scammer online, later tracked to Nigeria. Many online scams originate from that West African country. In a nation suffering from extremely high poverty levels, many see online crime as their only choice. Jacob Ward takes us to Nigeria where one now-reformed con artist opens up about why, and how, he did what he did.

$242K? I recently saw a woman on Catfished who gave her scammer a cool million. It was a lady just like this and the stories he told her to get that money, you just wouldn’t believe it. The desire to be loved by older American women is beyond any emotion I’ve ever seen.

Same story is with men of retirement age in the West-USA specifically that are traveling to Asian countries (Thailand and Philippines) to get the young women for themselves, starting new families and often live in those countries. That kind of things done on mass scale and men's shorter life expectancy causing shortage of older men to marry. Real issue and not just in the west, but Eastern Europe as well.

Middle class in some places is having two TVs and air conditioners....in other places it's having a gated compound dwelling.
I am telling you, there are way more have nots than haves and the class divides are canyons...

OK this person needs to live in, pay her bills and feed her family but then I need to feed my family.

I pity these people to an extent, but I'm also bewildered at the fact that the American actually gave the money away.
I feel like being terribly impoverished can lead some to take drastic measures to support themselves, which I can definitely understand to a degree, but I also feel that some of those people still are able to dig a way out of poverty with the resources that they do have access to - it just may be much more difficult for them than for the average person living in a developed country.
For the former group of people who can _really_ only make money through illegal means shouldn't be punished if the government cannot help them, but for the latter that despite being impoverished still has resources, they probably should be punished.
Sometimes, in very occasional circumstances, you cannot get what you need by being nice and following all the rules.
idk, i really dk, i think im interested in philosophy lol.

I was scammed myself 6 years ago 2018 after graduating college. I was scammed by a Nigerian too. During the summer 2018 this scammer asked me to buy amazon gift cards and that was gonna be trouble. They even asked me to buy plane tickets and I said no. So they kept asking me to buy more amazon gift cards until October when I was supposed to attend a wedding and I cancelled and I got a haircut and I had to tell my mom the truth and then she got mad and sad and hurt for what I did. And ever since then I gave up social media forever. And I want kids and other people to be off social media and other app cause these people are dangerous now .

You could donate to a charity to help these people, but the thing is, most charities take a sizable percentage, but that might be the toll to make sure donations make it to actual people in need. Most capitalist, free countries tend to have people who are more charitable with their money. Ask yourself, if you're living in a Western country, would you gladly throw someone broke in Nigeria $5 if you knew it would change their life, 100% of it goes to them, and they are someone who ledgit needs it, not a part of some gang that uses ppl to elicit donations and then the gang take 90% of the proceeds. Most people, even those not making much in the U.S. would gladly throw them $5, $10, $20 if it was guaranteed going to someone who ledgit needs it.

@@bookmark2846 Most of these women berried their husbands and never remarried, or just busy living their life and raising children, they retire and become lonely. Same story is with men of retirement age in the West-USA specifically that are traveling to Asian countries (Thailand and Philippines) to get the young women for themselves, starting new families and often live in those countries, they get scammed a lot also. That kind of things done on mass scale and men's shorter life expectancy causing shortage of older men to marry. Real issue and not just in the west, but Eastern Europe as well. It happens all over the world with bad people and con-artists who will do anything to get money.
