Love that Solar Octane! I think this was the best video I've seen demonstrating MTS and crawl control, great job Ryan! I can't believe Toyota dropped the ball on recovery hooks...
Easy upgrade
@@joseperezpaz9986 pricey upgrade because electronic air dam is in the way.
Hey you're doing great.keep going
I’m glad you are letting MTS and ATRAC in your videos. Helps show how the system actually works in the real world testing. Thank you.
Just would have been nice for Toyota to actually put some front recovery hooks on their off road model at least.
There is a incline meter. You just have to change to it from settings on the left side. Great video by the way!
Also, most phones have an app. that can show you, pitch, roll, elevation, etc. 😉
Correct - using the buttons on the steering wheel you can display the incline details.
Great review!
Awesome Truck, and video Ryan..
Excellent video.
70k and has discount tires! I don’t get it.
I think it's a somewhat common practice by OEMs in order to keep costs down and potentially improve fuel economy ratings.
@@ALMX5DP They all do it but there are exceptions.
@@ALMX5DP I’m pretty sure they failed on keeping the cost down part 😂
And no tow hooks on an offroad trim?!
@@lucleblanc6169 I am a huge Toyota fan BUT not having tow hooks is absolutely insane. I am glad my 20 Tundra has them. They sure can help in many ways.
Really awesome video. Fun stuff. Looks a lot like the Goldendale or Bickelton areas.I grew up not to far from there.
Dig the facts about the tires. Not everyone knows that Toyota puts cheap tires on that look like regular factory brand tires. While my Dunlops are great, obviously the Falkens are knock offs. Awesome you mentioned the CC sand pit function as well. Great all around off road system testing. Demonstrated how capable it is. Even tho the last section seemed to make all of the systems look useless, fact is, the tires let it down. I have run into the very same things on my 4R TRD OR. It can do just about everything pretty good on the Dunlops, but like all tires, they have their weak points. As for those that say you put the right tires on even a fwd car and it can go up that stuff, wrong. Tires are a huge factor, but if your drive system is not up to the challenge, you will find that even the perfect tires will let you down. And or break something in the attempt.
The recently announced Trailhunter version of the Tundra will have front tow points, absolutely ridiculous that the TRD Pro doesn't have them.
The Trailhunter is gonna be a turnkey overlander. It has aftermarket bumpers that include recovery points but there's already aftermarket support for recovery points for the TRD Pro. I do agree with you though, it should've came with factory recovery points.
And they will be priced at the Unobtanium level.
Im super excited about the 4runner update. Since they've done it to the sequoia and the tundra, i'm only assuming the 4runner will be next. the fact that the new tundra and sequoia get over 20mpg is very impressive honestly. that's almost as good as my 2010 subaru forester
Finally, mud. Lol 😂
Great job as always 👍🏼
Regarding the rear locker in Toyotas... after pressing the rear lock button, you have to give it a little throttle. It's not sitting there "thinking." It's waiting for you to give it some gas. It needs some throttle (and slip between the rear wheels) for everything to lineup and engage in the differential.
I found it easier to engage then turn the wheel and go slightly. Needs each side of the axle to move at different speeds to so pin can slide into place. Locks in really quick this way.
Which traction control is better: Land Rover or Toyota ?
Interested in this because the new 4Runner (whenever that comes out) will be using a lot of this tech and this platform as well. Great vid!
Would the 4 runner not be more similar to the new Tacoma platform? 4 runners are not as big as the tundra
@@christrarback9748 I meant more just in general of where Toyota is going with updated vehicles. And yeah I dunno I think a twin turbo 4 could be good all depends how well they do it
Great video. Whats great about the new Tundra, you don't need the TRD Pro to get these features, except the suspension but that is easily fixed with aftermarket or even Toyota products.
Yeah, that's an insane price with no lockers up front, my ZR2 was the same price lol V8, lighter truck, less complicated and front lockers.
There is an incline meter that gives pitch and roll. You have to change the setting on the MID which is the multi info display on the left side.
Another great review!
Enjoyed the video . I like the truck . For the price point little disappointing in crawl control , no recovering hooks
I’m in western Washington would love to bring this and try out there
Ryan, For a decade people rightly moaned that the Tundra did not offer a locking rear diff. Most of us would have used this new Tundra feature 15 seconds into this video
not 15 minutes 😉😉
He mentions it at 1:30
You pulled a jurassic park spinning in place there lol. That was cool. Let's see what the sequoia can do when you get your hands on one.
Same as this Tundra.
All TDR Pro🔥👍🚀
Dream truck 😎
Ryan any chance you could get a Defender again but this time run it through your course? I think the original review is pre-course. As for the Tundra I’m always surprised how capable full size trucks are considering their size and weight. Good job Toyota and the driver!
The new MTS system is actually very impressive. Great video! Toyota is going to have to figure out the tow hooks. That’s a big miss.
This is essentially a baby land cruiser 300 so the tow hoock is going to be very easy to make aftermarket or not.
Afe sells them $165
Love the TRD pro Tundra but I can’t lie I’m pretty obsessed with the Silverado ZR2.
I'd take the upcoming AT4x
@@weirdshibainu I would too if there were one available in my area. Just a bunch of diesels mostly SLT or Denali.
@@josephkraft5640 Yeah, it's probaby at least another 6 months before anything starts to break loose. Good luck
@@josephkraft5640 those diesel are no slouch
Can’t wait to see the new 4Runner on this platform 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
correct me if im wrong but would it not be the sequoia on this platform? and the 4runner would be on what ever the new tacoma is on?
@@jbmazhar2000 Im pretty sure the Tacoma and the 4Runner will be on a shortened version of this platform. So I anticipate those two trucks will be a lot wider than they are now.
They won't be on this platform.
@@Powers242 "The TNGA-F platform underpins body-on-frame vehicles in the full-size SUV and full-size pickup truck categories, and is also expected to underpin future mid-sized pickup trucks as well as mid-sized SUVs.[24] It supports a wheelbase length of 2,850-4,180 mm (112.2-164.6 in)."
@@Chineywhale remember platforms and dimensions can change. IIRC the Titan and Frontier shared a platform architecture, but the Frontier was still a proper midsize. It could become bigger, but just because of platform sharing i dont think that is a guarantee unless Toyota wants that for it's midsizers.
does this truck has 360 camera or any other parking assist features that can help me park in tight spaces
The crawl control sounds a lot better than my Tacoma does, I’ve used it a couple of times but sounds awful when in use.
Do you think the Land Cruiser 300 is comparable to this one ?
like in term of technology and power
could it do as good ?
Hi, does Toyota offer Right Hand Drive for Tundra 2022??
What is all the beeping? You mentioned it, but what is it the truck was telling you?
Nice system especially without the old creaking. Although I would prefer real lockers
I am surprised on this new tundra that the differential lock is still a pain in the butt to engage. When I read the owner's manual on my 2019 Tacoma it states not to engage differential lock until one is truly stuck but that's not very helpful when all it does is blink and if you truck is truly stuck and can't rock the truck at all then what lol.
I find it easy to lock if you engage then turn the wheel and move. Allows the pin to slide and lock. Works every time for me on my Tacomas 4Runners and Rubicons.
Great start to Saturday. 69k 🤬
Plz try the lx 600 here
Bruh 18 city 20 hwy???
The incline is by changing right screen on speedometer screen. Try and research before saying it doesn't have it. This why people go through the Toyota track so that reps can give you all the info you need instead of guessing..
Remember when you could buy a house for $70,000? Although, with the debt most new car buyers are in, the Tundra will probably serve as their house.
Please test the mazda cx60
Is That Mike Reno from Loverboy?!
This is a cool video but what about a Honda Odyssey/ Toyota Sienna showdown?
🥱
Off roading on wet grass on street or highway tires is usually a nightmare.
Man I'm still trying to figure out why these things are at 70,000. I'm trying to figure out why any truck is 70k. Just 2 years ago TRD pro was 50,000.
Wait the Tundra has 10.8 in of ground clearance? I thought it only had 9.8
how did that color pass the marketing team? i have to stifle my gag reflex with every external shot of the truck.
Great vid👍🏼
But its pretty pathetic seeing some people here dont understand what ur trying to do with the truck in this vid.
This was not about testing the driver’s skill, this was about testing what the Tundra TRD Pro in stock form has to offer.
And if it could do all THIS in its absolute stock setup, imagine what it could if it had all the aftermarket upgrades.
I’m deciding to buy weather the 4Runner or tundra trd pro ..can you do 1vs1 to see what fits better for snow roads ? Thanks
They aren't in the same category. The sequoia is the SUV that is tundra sized. Tacoma and 4runner are closer
@@Tallnerdyguy thxs but what you think wil perform better on the snow
@Ignacio Proudly!! tires will make a bigger difference in the snow than the vehicle. A Subaru with good tires is designed for snow. You are also comparing a $50k vs a $70k vehicle
Zero recovery hooks in front lol on a truck that will need them the most 😅 ! Already seen these getting stuck in sand dunes at off-road parks and guess what … the recovery hooks would have helped 😂
How would new Nissan Frontier would do here ? Let’s see how it does here.
Im from Germany and i love your Videos ! in europe this car doesnt sell i living in wrong country...
we have RAW4 or biggest toyota Highlander 2.5L Hybrid engine 250HP. 4 Cylinder -.- crap Europe
Eastern Washington? Are you based near Seattle?
That would be Western Washington, wouldn't it? 🙂
they forgot the front tow hooks & those seats look extremally cheesy with that camo pattern
Yikes. Imagine spending so much time designing and engineering such an expensive off-road vehicle, and then forgetting something so basic such as tow hooks.
Really want to love this truck. A Toyota pickup putting out 437 hp and 583 lbft of torque is awesome. No tow hooks and under seat storage is a deal breaker though
Shallow reason. Its not like impossible to add on later.
@@MrXerxes i concur
@@seandaman6509 adding tow hooks via aftermarket means is not the same as having the frame built with them in mind from factory. In the Hybrid there are no means of adding underseat storage. Shallow or not Toyota has not given a good reason why they've left these basic things out (while the competition has no issue with them). It's the same BS with the Tacoma when it came to power seats and a driver side grab handle
@@MrXerxes Agreed, the price is the biggest issue, which is why every other compromise feels that much worse
@@seandaman6509 Add them later?? For thousands of dollars and make your truck look like crap when all other trucks already have them. Lol. You can’t be serious.
now switch out the tires to the actual wild peaks and do the test, what a tricky fact about the tires...def want the snow rated versions if it was me.
Better tires are always better, but this still did everything pretty well. I think a mud terrain would excel more here, but i dont think any of those are snow rated.
It does have a inclinometer
🇺🇸 upgrade to TRAIL HUNTER! For the tow hooks.
I own 3 TRD 4x4 Trucks and for $70k, I suggest you buy a certified Lexus 4wd SUV.. You will do great around town and can still do some overlanding trips.
A damn Rav4 can get up this course, most of the time he gets stuck is because he stops is the most dumb spots.
$90,000 here in Canada. Just too much money.
What's the joy of driving if your letting the truck drive itself in the uphill?
No auto 4wd ??
If you put it in 4low itt automatically comes on the screen
A barely tested turbo six that gets a few more mpg than the motor that lasts longer. That’s not going green if you have to buy a new one more often. And that not mud. It’s moist top soil.
I love Toyotas but man they need better tires from Factory 🥺
Great video, awesome truck, lousy tires! I would replace that rubber immediately
Does TDR Pro have stiffer ride quality? Since it is off road capability?
I have a 22 TRD PRO and a LX570. The trd pro drives surprisingly smooth even with the tires. Love it.
@@Avaloxz Wow! That sounds nice. Will need to check out this truck. Thanks.
Typically off road suspensions are softer for better wheel articulation.
@@CarnutMM I see, but on youtube I have seen videos where their trucks' suspensions are very stiff and very hard because they have to load lot of equipment. But at the same time other off road trucks have pretty soft suspensions. Kind of confusing.
@@MusicLuv80 in Tacoma, TRD OR suspension is softer than non TRD OR. Each automaker is different. But I am sure Tundra is the same. Especially since they replaced the C-channel rear frame with fully boxed.
Change the view for inclinometer
@11:39. Umm.. the screen also shows pitch on auto camera.. so how does it not have it if there's two places to see it. This is why I hate some reviews... They don't research or even look to find what they need.. they just say oh that's sad it doesn't have it..smh
Obviously tires make a big difference, but this is a great example how the great tech is not a substitute of proper off roaring technique
Turn the sonar off and you should stop the beeping
Eh think I'll stick with my Ram which costed me about $25k less, has 4wd with the limited slip and 3.92 axle. Plenty $ leftover for A/T tires, leveling kit/ skid plates. Oh...and my Hemi V8 gets almost the same gas mileage lol.
What fuel mileage are you getting?
I would take Duratracs for mud n snow. No tow hooks is silly.
Great review, for that kinda money Toyota would put better tires on it or that would be a deal breaker.
In Finland Tundra cost 175000 USD 😢
Just use the right settings..
Another real miss is the lack of a full-time 4wd like Ford/GM/Ram offer
i watch that Matts off road recovery channel sometimes and dam, their vehicles have NONE of this technology, screens, buttons and other spaceship stuff and they can get up anything.
And vehicle like that are absolutely dreadful for everything else.
👍 😷
Not orange SOLAR OCTANE just got mine wow what a beast same exact truck only thing I dislike. TURNING RADIUS SUCKS.
I want to like this truck. I describe myself as a Toyota fan boy, But I just don’t understand some of the choices Toyota made on this vehicle. I went with the powerboost instead and I still feel like I made a good choice.
trd pro for $70k or a ford raptor for $76k? Toyota is out of their mind with the pricing.
Largely the new Tundra is a dud. Hopefully they can get this iconic truck back on track. Here’s to hoping the new Tacoma isn’t a disappointment as well.
the tires the factory put on the vehicle (street tires) make for a nice smooth ride...... They ARE NOT the same tires for this test
tundra is built like a tank its so heavy.
great review again, thanks Ryan. $70K for that exquisite premium plastic look inside that toyota is known for. i don’t get it. i also find the traction system overrated, at min 15 when you got stuck, all 4 wheels were spinning for awhile without any visible progress or change.
While I agree that $70k is a lot, this generation Tundra's interior is vastly different and much more upscale than the previous version with all that plastic you are talking about. Also, when the truck got stuck, it was not the traction system but the tires that was the limiting factor.
I think it dumb cheaping out on a tire on the Tundra TRD Pro....there are hundred stupid things you can save money on but not tires...I understand a mud tire would be too much, but proper all terrain, like the real Falkens, or KO2's (which by the way may not be as good in the mud as he thinks) should be expected...if anything, most people don't know Toyota is using some dumbed down version of their tires (also on Rav4 TRD), so if they don't have good experience, they won't consider it in the future...so looks like everyone is losing.
Bro momentum lol and wild peaks are not half bad you need to air down as well 38psi and hill climbing is ridiculous
These aren’t “real” Wildpeaks.
@drivingsports I have a 2023 I can't tell a difference in the real vs partner version
@@dman5703 OEM has less tread depth and will last about 1/2 as long as the retail version. Also, OEM isn’t peak rated for snow like the “full” AT3W. Those are pretty significant differences.
No full time 4x4 option and no tow hooks = off-roader fail. Pretty nice truck otherwise.
Turn the beep off then..
you gotta find some better trails, i wouldn’t even classify these as trails
Needs better tires
For that price I’d buy a used 2016-2020 Toyota landcruiser with shorter wheel base and overbuilt Japanese build quality.
Previous generations of Tundra were also built as you described
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 The land cruisers are made in Japan, Tundra has always been in the US
@@funnybeingme true. I should’ve clarified although built in Texas, it’s also overbuilt and extremely durable and long term reliability is spectacular.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 nope the tundras are junk. I seen lots of 2017 tundras in the junkyard with a blown head gasket.. Most old tundras I seen have frame rust.
No tow hooks, no front locker, an aluminum skid plate, and half baked tires? For $70,000? Both Falken and Toyota should be ashamed for compromising brand integrity. Doesn't the Bible say something about unequal weights and measures?
Congrats to Toyota for cheaping out on the tires on a $70K truck
We get to watch this guy drive the truck from the inside and see the performance from the outside.... At a distance.. Everyone is more worried about all the BS electronic features than what the truck can actually do with actual driver skills.
C’mon man. At certain speeds you actually have more traction mud on mud or snow on snow.
