  • Season 1, Episode 4, Railways Abandoned Spaces. Embark on a journey through time as we walk the rails of history and unveil the mystique of the abandoned Neath Railway Station. Nestled in the heart of the bush, this relic of the South Maitland Railway reveals a captivating tale of bygone eras. Witness the haunting remnants of a disused platform, derelict toilet block, and a historic signal box stripped, all shrouded in the embrace of overgrown blackberry brambles and grass. Opening its doors in 1908 amidst the boom of Hunter Valley mining, this once-thriving station witnessed the rise and fall of an industry. Although the line fell silent in 2020, Neath Station ceased its operations in the early 1980s, leaving behind echoes of an era long past. Join us in this exploration of abandonment, where every rustling leaf and crumbling structure whispers stories of a forgotten railway heritage. 🚂🌿 #abandonedplaces #railwayhistory #southmaitlandrailway

Hi Barrie 👋 I really hope the service to Cessnock becomes a reality, and I can almost see it in this wonderful presentation. So much rich railway history would be forgotten and unknown to the trainspotters of today if it was not for you and others showing us with presentations like this. Well done, Barrie 👏 👍

Thanks John, I really enjoyed making this one. My little guy came with me on this one and he is still talking about it 2 months later. It would be great if they do get something up and running again. Maybe they could use Caledonia station for Cessnock as Cessnock has spread and grown so much. Thanks for watching

There are more pros than cons for a new passenger line Bellbird to Newcastle.

The scene at 2.28 shows the steam loco "East Greta" on the side, was it bought out by SMR later? Poor Neath has really fallen on hard times, would be a great little line to be kept open with the Tin Hares doing picnic excursions along it. Plenty of spare levers in the little signal box, the stories it could tell eh? Well narrated Barrie, great work once again.

Hi Dave, as far as I can research the East greta mine operated on the South Maitland coalfields until the depression. I agree It would be great if they could do something with it.

Great video . Thanks Barrie. The scene at 2:44 is beautiful and cinematic, I can see what seems to be a lot of water and steam but what is happening here ?

Hi Denizen. Great question, I'm pretty sure it's part of the mines coal washing process but I may be wrong, someone may know better than I. Thanks for commenting

Pity it's left to decay. Could be useful, like a small cafe, much like the Signal Box at Newcastle. Cessnock council won't come forward unless there's funding.

Hi Rick, a cafe would be a great solution or a souvenir shop run by volunteers. Hopefully something can be done. Thanks for watching

I wish they'd find different infrastructure to wreck, maybe a police station.

I at first was annoyed at the senseless destruction by vandals spoken about in here but then on reflection if nature (white ants) are having they way, it really does not matter.

Hi Warren. I do agree, although the white ants are isolated to the toilet area which wouldn't take much for a restoration team to fix. It is a real shame that people feel the need to destroy something just for the sake of it. For me it's smashing the windows letting in the weather that is the worst part. Caledonia station down the line has degraded further with storm damage as well. Thanks for watching Warren.
