    We have millions of vocalists who sing chesty, but very few who can maintain a balanced mix.

    She has complete control over the ratio of her mix as well as the power and darkness/heaviness of the notes she sings in mids and even lows
    And no doubt sohyang has a very powerful big voice

    She used more pure AH vowel on these notes, which is a resonance that's mainly produced by the laryngopharynx. The techniques she developed later is way more efficient and advanced comparing to these, hence why we don't hear her sing with this tone often anymore, she actually avoids AH vowels. If we listen to 0:48 and 1:15 back to back(and there's a either C5 or D5 in this perf right before she went for that G5 I can't remember), it's clear she's only willing to use it on these sustained notes for emotive purposes, to add texture, and to emphasize.

    Good compilation.
    However I wouldn't equate singing with a chestier mix with necessarily having a "big"voice. You can have a "big" voice if you maintain sound and consistent resonance and possess good to excellent volume control, qualities which Sohyang certainly possess.
    Sohyang prefers a balanced mix with adequate support for the most part, but does elect to use a chestier mix occasionally to accentuate the dramatic effects of certain songs, most notably "It's Only My World". However, opting for a chestier approach does not mean she is singing less healthily, as long as her larynx is in a neutral position and adequate support is maintained. One could argue that as a full lyric soprano, her chest resonance may not be as pronounced as say Beyonce who is a mezzo, but that does not take away from her having a "big" voice imo.

    The placement definitely sounds different, i think the Bb4's were like whitney houston shouting BOBBYYY. She is just shouting, it's how i used to sing. I remember when i first started learning about notes and shit. And i thought my range was an octave higher, i thought i was so slick singing mariah. When you start really learning to sing from yourself, you learn how hard it really is. It isn't only talent, it's right placement, breathing, not pushing, vowels... At least if you don't wanna scream or shout.

      I just love that she can actually has control(on some degrees, but still relatively better than other singers) over her mixing ratio & using different placement to achieve different tones. It's kinda rare for her to sing like this but Sohyang's nowadays when sing her midbelts is kinda similar? Not necessarily chesty just it's more chest-placed so it kinda deep & darker than her mids before 2017.

    • @Ignasimp
      @Ignasimp Před 5 lety

      @@______-xh4pn the point of the original comment is that the weak spot for a soprano is usually having a well developed chest voice and low notes. You pointing out that we shouldn't call her a full lyric soprano but just a soprano is just missing the point of the comment. And it's definitely easy to tell that she is a full lyric soprano. Contemporary singers not being able to be called their voice type is a myth. Operatic classifications are artificial. We invented them and they were supposed to classify voices independently of the technique they are using. A full lyric will still be a full lyric even if she has good, bad, extraordinary or horrible technique, and even if she has classical or contemporary technique because the differences are phisiological. She is a full lyric soprano, and that's a fact.
