    Monaco is definitely another example of how F1 was originally built for drivers, rather than passionate fans. Monaco is prestigious for the extra challenge it puts on the drivers, rather than the ability to race side by side. It’s that which makes it so significant.

And the "not for fans" bs you giving oh my god how wrong you are. Monaco is all about fans. I think the backdrop and the mystique surrounding the whole idea of racing around the narrow streets of one of the highest concentrations of wealth on the planet thats remained the same for decades upon decades is overlooked. No other circuit is as risky either, the barriers make it exciting as well considering these guys are going 185 mph while millimeters from a solid barrier for the entire race is enthralling in it's own right and it's worth watching for that highest of skill levels arguably more so than any other race. I was away from the sport for a decade due to access to broadcast and came back late 2019. Let's just say the state of Ferrari for the last year or so have taught me to appreciate racecraft, engineering, precision, tatctics and all of what makes F1 special. It's not always thrilling, but there is always something to appreciate, admire and learn.

    Not every overtake is perceived to be interesting (because many other racing factors are subconsiously factored in), you’re right about that. But I don’t believe that means “lack of overtaking opportunities” isn’t a fair argument anymore.
    Most overtakes in general have the cars in question at some sort of pace imbalance, currently mostly tires. But a race with 90% “predictable” overtakes and 10% “non-predictable” overtakes > a race with 100% no overtakes.
    Monaco Qualifying is mesmerizing in a way. But the monaco race isn’t a good race to watch

    • @CYMotorsport
      @CYMotorsport  Před 3 lety +1

      and maybe quali will be enough. if you think about it... there's an inverse relationship with importance of quali and overtaking opportunities.

    • @zephyrod7307
      @zephyrod7307 Před 3 lety +1

      @@CYMotorsport that's true, but importance of qualifying and enjoyability of qualifying don't necessarily correlate. Monaco has "bad race" as prerequisite (but usually has good qualifying), but tracks with good racing don't have "bad quali" as prerequisite.

    • @CYMotorsport
      @CYMotorsport  Před 3 lety

      @@zephyrod7307 you say that cavalierly. You seem to have a somewhat prescriptive approach when judghing monaco bc it suits your point. but when you say "bad'' qualifying, all of sudden you get a bit loosey goosey. what makes qualifying bad? notice, you didn't even explain what makes monaco good. thus, by definition you're not equipped to actually speak on any of this given what you've laid out. you haven't said THE most important part: how MUCH better is monaco qualifying than others? how MUCH worse is monaco as a race. without that, you're sticking your finger in the air. you don't need to answer haha but if you were trying to convince me, I'm too methodical to guess without establishing truths. it's a fun thought experiment for sure. I dont know the answers either but even anecdotally, it actually makes monaco sound better as I say that

    • @zephyrod7307
      @zephyrod7307 Před 3 lety

      @@CYMotorsport I gave a bit of a loose answer because I was more outlining a concept than explaining it in depth (the lack of correlation between importance and enjoyability of qualifying).
      What makes both qualifying and race good or bad is a very subjective question. After all, there are some people out there who do actually like Monaco races (not just qualifying). But as a general sentiment a good race seems to be one where cars have the ability to fight each other on track, based on community sentiment and the governing body heavily investing into allowing cars to follow each other more easily with the 2022 regulations to generate more wheel to wheel combat. Unpredictability of the outcome of the race also seems to be a factor in enjoyment, hence 2010 and 2012 being regarded as some of the best seasons in recent F1. I'd have to dig deeper into numbers that I haven't quite dug into to assess the second criteria (unpredictability), but Monaco has a reputation of being won by a front row man. Again, don't have the statistics on that, which is why I'm not basing my point on this one. The first criteria however is different. Wheel to wheel racing in Monaco, how much of that have we gotten? Mick overtook Mazepin, and later was passed because of fuel pressure issues. Vettel had a genuine wheel to wheel battle with Gasly so that was cool, but that was it.
      In my experience, people generally seem to attribute "good qualifying" to two main factors (I might be missing something, but those 2 factors seem rather valid): Unpredictability, and how much they enjoy individual cars driving on that track (in a setting where direct inter-car competition isn't in question, so wheel to wheel battles are a non-factor). Again, I do not have the data on the unpredictability of Monaco qualifying. We did certainly had the surprise of Ferrari having great pace, and 7 different teams in Q3 is definitely a welcome surprise, but again this isn't data based so take it with a grain of salt if you wish. The second point is what I'd pin as the main factor, mainly based on community sentiment (and also how Monaco is marketed). The "true test of driver skill". People seem to just really enjoy seeing F1 cars go around Monaco as long as they don't have to race each other, and that's totally fair. It's a great *show*. Which is enough for some people.
      I would disagree that "how much worse is Monaco race vs how much better is it's qualifying vs other races" is THE most important point. It certainly is important, but it is a very subjective point imo, so I don't see either of us establishing a truth as you put it. As already mentioned before, "how" great or bad something is isn't easy to objectively quantify. Which is why the entire debate of people who say Monaco sucks vs people who say it doesn't is both heated and eternal. I can certainly see the upsides of Monaco, but I'd wager the downsides outshine them.
      I wouldn't say I'm trying to convince you of my stance. Some people like Monaco, some don't. But I saw an argument in your points that I believe was worth taking further. There were certain points that I agreed with, and certain points that my brain immediately attempted to counter, so I left a comment to provoke some thought. I guess in a roundabout way it's a compliment along the lines of "this piece of content left enough of an impact to make me want to discuss the points it makes, but I don't quite agree with some of the sentiments. Here's my counterpoint, and I'd be happy if you replied with yours". Which seems to have worked:) It's for sure an interesting debate, and I'm happy to go into some fact crunching

    Monaco is famous I think because it's also one of the most difficult tracks to race in the world.
    Even if you do have first place, keeping that position without losing a fraction of a second's focus and crashing is difficult.
    In the F1 2019 video game, I was knocking out every track in first place. With assists of course, with the exception of ABS.
    Although, Monaco? I couldn't.
    I straight up resigned from the race after dozens of tries and just moved on. I couldn't complete the race without losing a damn wing, even though I won first in quali.
    I couldn't do it in the video game, where they have less laps and the benefit of assists and just not being irl. I can only imagine this gauntlet of driving in real life

  • @nickveselov9915
    @nickveselov9915 Před 3 lety +1

    The reasoning behind the video works perfectly when you talk about qualification, where every margin counts. But in the race, you don't really have to push at all, because the car behind won't be able to overtake you even if it catches you. Which leads to cars driving at a comfortable pace, very little errors (because of low demand to push) and basically 78 laps of cars circling with the same order as they started. Why have race then at all? Just do a triple quali weekend.

I'm not sure if it was Crofty that said that a drivers championship consists of many types of tracks and Monaco is just a different type.. Hungary isn't much different.. With having the current rules for qualifying it really makes the driver and team put the whole weekend together..
