    In this Jazz Piano online course I will bring you from the level of a complete jazz beginner up to the level of an intermediate/advanced pianist. We will talk about both theory and applications, and cover concepts ranging from chords and scales, to diatonic harmony, voicings, substitutions, soloing, tensions, and much more.
    In this first lesson I will just give you an overview of what I plan to cover and also get you familiarized with a jazz ballad - we will return to this ballad many times to illustrate many of the theoretical and abstract concepts you will pick up along the way. You can just listen to it now, or try and learn to play it by copying what I do (this is not required for the remainder of the course, and just a "bonus challenge" for those of you up to the task). I hope this course inspires and motivates younger pianists who want to master this fascinating art form.

    That piece of music brought tears to my eyes. From a very young age I remember asking my mother if I could learn the piano, I played until 9 years old, got a distinction in my exam. Unfortunately family dissolved, many unloved moments until i left home. I never played again, but always had a piano in the house, hoping that my children may pick it up one day, they tinkered a bit, but nothing serious. Neither my husband or myself play, but, I still have a piano. I don't believe in coincidences, your video just popped up in my feed, it made me stop, look and listen. I'm now 62, crying at you playing. Maybe it's time to start again and what a wonderful way to learn. Thank you so much. ❤

I kinda wish the software would change colors when you have multiple presses .. so even if E is blue because you played it.. when you played it again, it should change to yellow, then red again until is fades out.. then blue again. So, if I’m understanding correctly, at precisely 4:15 (for ex) this chord could be called (built as) any one of the three listed to the right, but is more commonly referred to as E min9 flat 5 over B-flat? So what I will be working to understand next is why the 9 is added to the top and why the flat five is repeated up top…AND…how to know this when using only Fake book or Real book charts. This is awesome. Thx again.

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  Před 7 měsíci +1

      We'll answer all of those questions throughout the course.
      You cannot know how to voice a chord based on a real book chart. In fact, the real book assumes you "know what you're doing" and doesn't hold your hand 95% of the time. It also assumes you'll be reharmonizing a lot. I'll teach you how to voice chords at we approach Lesson #10 or so. Stick around and you'll find out!

  • @grizzlymartin1
    @grizzlymartin1 Před 7 měsíci

    Question: I took screen shots of the chords in the opening example. But in lesson two the ballad uses different chords in two of the measures as shown here czcams.com/video/5hfXKJh84WY/video.htmlfeature=shared&t=1007
    Will this be explained in later lessons? I’m working with them as if they are simply different voicings to see if I’m missing something. Thx.

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The version of the ballad used after Lesson 1 is a simplified form, which will get complicated as we work through the course and pick up ideas about harmonizations. Eventually we will recover the original "full" form shown in Lesson 1.
