In today's lesson we'll discuss how the Beatles wrote Blackbird. Well, to be honest, I have no idea how exactly it was written, but if we follow some very simple ideas we'll see how it "emerges" almost naturally through our playing. We'll talk about diatonic (within-scale) and chromatic motion, planing, motion in 3rds and in 6ths, and present examples from the rich repertoire of The Beatles.

    Why did you call it a C Aeolean-Dom bebop scale? Doesn’t Aeolean require a minor third? This just looks like a major (Ionian) scale with a bebop G# and a dominant/mixolydian Bb on it. I don’t see where Aeolean plays into it.

    I like this attitude towards harmony. Too often is it it viewed as a rigid system in which we have to place ourselves in some way in order to sound decent. My only problem with this kind of "blind-folded" approach is that say you come across a particular change or tonal quality that you really like, you will be unable to reproduce it a second-time around because you don't necessarily understand from technical point of view what you did or what made so pleasing. This is why I like to play the random stuff and then do the work to find the musical framework that explains it. This helps with ear-training and musical imagination as well, because you get better at envisioning very specific "random" changes to break up the familiarity of your chord progression.

  • @oneirdaathnaram1376

    For heaven's sake, what's this? Sorry to not appreciate at all what you do: - You do play PARALLEL FIFTHS! - You have NO COUNTERPOINT at all! (You have PARALLEL MOVEMENTS all over the place!) Result: It simply sounds AWFUL to my ears. You are deliberately DISREGARDING THE LAST 400 YEARS of the art of music. You'd better teach THE RULE OF THE OCTAVE and COUNTERPOINT. My opinion is that one should teach beginners proper art and not no-goes, just for the sake of simplicity. Therefore, sorry to not appreciate at all the effort you have put into this video.

    • @oneirdaathnaram1376
      @oneirdaathnaram1376 Před 2 dny

      @@MangoldProject It simply is not good quality what you teach. Do you know "The Rule of the Octave"? Do you know why a good voicing uses "counterpoint" and what it means? Do you know why since ever in music composition one did avoid parallel 5ths and 8ths? Your teaching to "beginners" leads them simply onto an ugly track that disregards any basics of harmonization, sorry that I have to mention that. You should know that, if you ever have studied some bit of harmonization. Sorry, but I very strongly disagree with you as I have the impression that you do not really know the fundamentals of harmonization, do you? Why on earth do you teach parallel 5ths? Why do you not mention inversions for avoiding parallel movements? The videos of "Music Matters" here on CZcams for example are much, much more into the tricks of the art and still easy to understand, even for "beginners". Sorry to mention that, but the content of your video really does not even cover the very basics: It is leading interested beginners completely astray whilst you certainly know better. Well, anyone can publish on CZcams. But then, please, do not call this a serious basic attempt to the harmonization of music. Avoiding of parallel 5ths and 8ths, and counterpoint movement are the very basics. We know that since 400 years. Why? Because it simply sounds way better. And this is not a matter of taste but of the principles of physics.

    I've been "stuck" on Burgmüller for a while. But I'm transposing them into all keys to learn the keyboard, as well as the fretboard. La Candeur is the pentatonic scale. Arabesque is a way to learn minor. La Pastorale is a beautiful melody. La Petite Réunion is like this lesson, and exercise in thirds, but also the relationship of the Dominant and Diminished pentatonic scales. Innocense is a scale exercise, while Progrés is also this lesson since the scales are in tenths. Or it could be modal? I thought of creating little exercises and taking them around the circle of fourths. Your video is very inspiring.

    Hi, Mr. Mangold, nice to see you back making videos again. Been awhile. The "bebop" scale I'm familiar with is a major scale with a flatted 7th in addition to the natural 7th, at least ascending. In descending, it sometimes switches over to the flatted 6th in addtion to the nat. 6th - according to some. The 'major' Barry Harris scale adds a flattened 6th to a major scale, both ascending and decending. Which he called a "major diminished 6th" scale. In the minor variant, the 3rd is flattened.

    • @MangoldProject
