Dude this is funny, because I stripped my dash almost ten years ago and I welded a tiny skid plate to the center and had the first gen I pad on that. I still have that dash in my garage. I wish I could upload a photo on this comment.
there are some pics of the dash i painted here. the mesh underneath is gutter gaurd off ebay drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Uf2ZLbaje7eVIldU4cqiKZ2a8OKctgFk?usp=sharing

This is the video I've been looking for, thank you. Gonna do the same.
This looks like a cool way to make a custom dash

Tig in the holes .. looks great though! Hate all the padding and love the metal dashes
I'm a definitely do this in my '79 C10...👍🏿
Beeing like that its easier to patch it , then diber glass& filler,, paint
go for it! i have another one i painted
Hmm any idea of the 88-98 dashes are same way?
I was gonna just build a dash out of metal but I like your idea better
Haven't ever tried any other models. But you can usually get the dash pads for like $10 at a junk yard. Could be worth a little experiment
Are you able to reinstall the trim on the dash, and do you have to clear coat it or paint it. Thanks for any answers.
you can still mount the trim. but you may need a washer on the backside to spread over the hole as it is a little wider without all the foam there

That looks good I have a square body too you should check it out on my channel
Can you make a update video on this dash
What is the link for the gutter guard?
Changed my idea. This looks easier lol
Is this just a normal squarebody dash pad?
Yes it's what the stock 81+ pad is underneath all the plastic and padding
Ok, so you stripped the pad to bare metal, that's it?
yes sir. pried most of it off with a putty knife, then a wire wheel on a drill to clean the rest off. done
