"... cheaper than a complicated LEGO kit". That got me thinking... Would it be possible to make a 3D printer out of LEGO? Like as a proof of concept more than anything
Lagger Onesixfour do you have a 3d printer? Then you know why it didn't. Except if you thought he had taken it off before the video, which is the most logical answer. I will show myself the door.
Another great review Angus, I watched the live stream and now I'm really glad I didn't back this as I am very new to 3D printing so I would definitely have broken it. So thank you
Angus, you are my favourite 3d printing-related youtuber and my go-to whenever I need to get my fix for additive manufacturing, but the word you're looking for is "supposedly", not "supposably" :D
Thank you for the review! It's actually nice to know that a sub $100 printer is possible, though probably not a good thing. Favorite moment was at 8:40 "The whole thing wobbles"...including your table, camera, and shelves.
I am 11 years old and i have had one of these for 1 1/2 years now and everything that he said was true. i just threw it out and got an ender 3 and i wish that i had not spent the money on it. for me it was 140 NZD and I feel like i have been ripped off from ebay sellers from that :( anyway, great video and everything that he said is very true and there was no exaggeration
Hey Angus I finely received my 101 Hero!! it cam in yesterday. Built it in 45 min and its been printing perfect works on the card and hooked into Repetier-Host really well. I just want to let you know that all of them are not lemons.... Love your videos Keep up the great work... Thanks
The wobble in the frame can be reduced very simply, several ways. Use some single strand wire to x brace the top half of the 3 pillars. Leave the bottom half open for access. Or, glue or add a printed c channel to facing edges of the pylons and then insert panels. Clear plastic faced sides would look best. Also, containment of the actual build space, with a removable panel or door would retain heat and improve quality as well. The simplest way...DUCK TAPE. Wrap as much of it as you dare carefully, with an eye to removing the wobble, and prepare to be amazed...Likely the ugliest, but should work surprisingly. Actually, corrugated cardboard panels on at least 2 and a half sides, taped in place would likely work most cheaply. . . Bo.
Bought it for basically the same reason, just wanted to see what was accomplished in a low price point - mine has been unable to fully level but haven't had a ton of time - only reason to get it was really a look at what one can get! Plan on giving it to my cousin's kids once I dial it in a little better so thanks for the tips on improvements!
Thanks for the great review! Seems like a much more complex and probably less precise extruder positioning mechanism than my Da Vinci Mini has... That probably makes it so slow too. Hopefully they will improve it based on your and everyone Else's feedback.
Your review was the reason I backed the Cetus3D. Now that I have it, I have to say, thank you! I love this thing so far. Great quality prints and it was only $249USD. Thanks Angus!
Great to hear they delivered on their promises! Does the software let you select what nozzle diameter you're using? I asked them to implement it but not sure if it has been.
considering the heating bed - it can be made here very easily with car parts - like anti-frost heating elements for windows, which very accessible, i even found in Auchan supermarket a special "conductive glue" for repair anti-frost heater if metal string cuts, you can repair there almost 2 cm cuts
For those wondering hardware of this caliber can become a great printer. I would suggest the rubber bands of course(even production Delta's use similar devices) to tension the mechanics. The biggest issue I see is the frame. I'm sure people will be making plastic upgrades available on thingiverse ect but you could also pickup some 1/8" x 2" angled aluminum from Home Depot/Lowe's for those of you in the US. From there each "tower" can be stiffened with some aluminum or steel plating from the same source. I know many who have used these same steppers for lightweight direct extruders with great success but the 3 tower steppers should eventually be replaced with larger/faster steppers for $8-10 each.
Can you make a video for noobs? I have an engineering background and have a ton of drawing/3d modeling experience. I am interested in 3d printing and know nothing about it. Can it talk about materials, min/max limitations, framework, controls, interface, software, file types, print quality (how it's measured), equipment costs, material costs, support/communities, accuracy, and precision? Please also discuss setup, operation, and tweaking.
dude ive been waiting and praying you were going to say,"yeah got it going and its running great" but deep down i expected exactly what you said,im going the Anet
Hi MM, Awesome video, but please could you make a review on The Creality CR-8 3d Printer? I know its not that new, but im really interested in it. Thanks In Advance!
hi Angus, do you know where to get a nice simplify3d config file or profile for the anet a8? by the way awesome videos :D and about the blocks zero, im from portugal, i didnt even know there was a portuguese 3d printing company here they dont have anywhere for sale or telling you about it. (but nice review non the less :D )
Hi Angus, love your channel and videos. I just ordered myself a 3d printer (Anet A8 ). Im also from Australia, whats a good store in Australia to order filament from?
where can i find this FB community you talked about? i didn't find it and i have so many questions because I'm new in 3D Printing and 101Hero is my first Thanks a lot
Awesome! Where can I get good plastic like the one you are using to print on the 101 hero? Also what settings do you use to get the best out of it? I am using cura so have not dabbled with settings yet but how do I slow down the printer speed and improve other settings?
I can see this being a good printer for people who are just starting to learn auto cad and all the different printing programs and wanting to start 3D printing
Bit off topic but I'm new to your channel (my wanhao i3 brought me here) did you print the chainsaw I see in the back of all your videos? If so do you have a video? I had a look at your other videos but can not see in the title.
Well I won't be getting one of these. Do you have any recommendations for an affordable 3d printer for a complete newb? I'm after something that will give me decent results, but won't break the bank, while I decide if 3d printing is for me. Thanks so much, your channel has been super informative.
2:54... That micro switch limit switch is not mounted correctly to begin with. I had ordered one from their website and after seeing your live stream of the build..... I cancelled my order. Thanks Angus. Glad I did after seeing this more complete Review.
great video and honest as always! thx for the shout out to the FB group. over 550 members and growing every hour! do you have a link for that spool holder?
28BYJ-48 motors have terrible backlash! I am curious about the drivers... Did they use the horrible ULN2003 or hack the motors to use DRV8825 / A4988 drivers?
Feel so sorry now that I backed this too. I still haven't got it though, and now I'm not even looking forward to get it. Still, great info and thank you for the video!
it shipped to me for 70$ . it's lots of work to actually make it work . but I always enjoyed working with cheap hardware and try to learn . I connected to my raspberry pi using octaprint and mounted a camera . now I can see it working on my phone . I tried few diffrent pla like wood and bronze . it actually print very well at speed of 15. since it doesn't hsve a auto leveling it is really hard to level . To counter that in octaprint you can create own custom control using gcode command and move it to diffrent directions and then try to see distance from platform . add a brim for flat surface and raft for uneven one. older versions of like 15.2 works well . add some oil to rods to make it run smoother . make sure to clean those rods as well or it make the black thingy (I don't know what to call it ) will go off the pully. before changing to new filament heat it 200c not then stop the printer and take out the filament or it will stuck inside . nobody is getting sd cards with it you have to buy your own or use octaprint and pi. good luck
Anet Printers are so nice. If you tweaked them right the prints are mind blowing. Got my Anet A6 for around 180€ as a Kit and it performs extremely well and Even has a heated bed and 22x22x25 cm build Volume.
Just got my 101hero today. I knew it was going to be crap from the start but i figured it would be ok to use and rebuild a new one with. Any suggestions on parts to buy towards making this product better? I don't even plan on using the motors that come with it as I've seen some people saying they are lighting on fire. I do plan on getting the MP mini select in a few weeks as I've heard some good things about it.
I think it's something do with preventing someone setting up an online slicing service using it, as its intended for internal personal or business use. I could be wrong
so if you were to decide to take the time tighten up the wobble, and sturdy the base, what things would you tweek to get it to be feasible? the reason I ask is because I have always taken the cheaper versions and made them better from computers to tools, I know how to do what a person would, but I don't want to order it without knowing what I'm getting myself into, because sadly even for me there is a point at which it's not worth it,
The first I thought when I saw the cat model was "looks like a 3D-pen quality model"..and then I found out why. Honestly, I really want a 3D printer but I doubt I'll go below around £300. But that's still a ways off for me. Great videos though and really thorough!
I bought the developer version from their website shortly after the Kisckstarter project ended. Got mine working and even with the SD card, though I didn't manage to print anything besides the stupid 2d star that came on the SD card. No matter what I've tried, couldn't get Cura software to recognize my "Hero"... Thanks for the great review. Hope someone here can redirect me for some good and simple help dealing with this printer. Thank you.
I wonder if it would be possible to replace the tiny motors with something from the NEMA range, like the NEMA 1. I mean, i don't doubt it would be expensive, but I thought it was an interesting concept
at 8:40, you mention that because it's made out of plastic, the whole thing wobbles insanely. It would seem to me that simply wrapping some string, diagonally from top to bottom should dramatically tighten that up. Put 12 screws into the pylons, then attach the 6 strings to the screws. You could also use something more sturdy (which would defeat the purpose on a low cost item). String will only help in one direction while a metal post would prevent motion in both direction. As long as you have strings in all of the support diagonals, you only need to deal with stress from one direction.
3:40 they're not called "pylons". In engineering, that setup is known as a "parallel manipulator". It has been around for sooo many years. There are also many manufacturing robots that use the same setup for pick and place applications.
Hi Angus currently I have the Monoprice select mini printer and have been looking to save for a decently cheep printer that prints rubber. What would you recommend?
Hey Angus! I have just received my 101hero and i think it has printed amazingly so far, but i have encountered some problems. The main problem is that it when im printing for example a calibration cube it ends of looking like a staircase. I dont know why but i think its called missed steps or something. How do i fix it?
Fisher technic has a 3D printer. it's available here in Germany for 514,95€ and therefore really expensive. but since it's highly modular. the build volume can be expanded easily. I don't think about getting the 101hero. I am currently looking at the Cetus3D when they can ship in February. you just mentioned the Anet A8 as a good value product. I will find some reviews if it.
I ordered the Anet A8 from Gearbest a few months ago, had to dispute the order in the last few days because the item simply hadn't been shipped and I wasn't going to be had again.
fellow strayan and i went and bought the anet a8 found the price to be ridiculously cheap from what ive seen hope its good as it will be my second printer (cough m3d micro cough much regret cough almost double the price than this a8 cough) costed me 260aud including 20 shipping post and 5 insurance and tracking. saw reviews were generally good and people say its based off a prusa sooooo yeah gone be fun building this for first DIY printer thanks for the recommend
I'm a mechanical engineering student, I like to play around in Inventor, I would like to know if there's a relatively affordable printer out there that has a good print quality, can print complex shapes easily, and works with inventor. Back in the lab on campus they have a really big expensive looking one that prints the stuff and then submerge ms the print in liquid to dissolve anotger plastic it prints for support... Or something. Idk I'm not very knowledgeable about 3d printers, lol
Appreciate that your review was thorough, and that you didn't just mock their attempt.
"... cheaper than a complicated LEGO kit".
That got me thinking... Would it be possible to make a 3D printer out of LEGO?
Like as a proof of concept more than anything
Sure. You could even make it a cannibal, melting its kind for filament :)
AlfonsoB LEGO is too expensive to cannibalise
I'd rather buy the cheap knockoffs for that :P
some trivia : lego engineers that experiment with making kits don't bother taking them apart, they dump it in the black bricks melting machine.
The answer is yes, well, kinda of
/watch?v=VXeQ5WOiPFw
LEGO is also too expensive to use as stock too. But that fact did not seem to phase you.
The sad part is it actually prints better than the Tiko....
103 Hero ?
Richard Ryerson MP mini select is gonna be the best printer for beginners under 200 dollars
Nick Biller Maybe the new Fabrikator Mini V2.
"Get rid of the tape. It's tearable." That's where I lost it :D
3:12 When you were maneuvering the print I thought the glass bed was gonna fall off and hit something XD
Lagger Onesixfour do you have a 3d printer?
Then you know why it didn't.
Except if you thought he had taken it off before the video, which is the most logical answer.
I will show myself the door.
I did actually knock the bed off during testing... It didn't smash luckily! The clips hold it in place normally
I spent the same amount of money on 2 linear smooth rods from Misumi as this entire printer... what a day to be alive and into printing.
skyalchemist0 That Printer is cheaper than one of my CNC-Steppermotors xD
Dude, I love your work!
These reviews and your insights are really helpful.
Susi xx
"Which kind of violates their user agreement"
LOL
Even though that rocket didn't print properly the resulting model would look great in some sort of post-apocalyptic model scenario
This is now my favourite 3D printing channel. What a nice, intelligent chap. Subscribed.
It's greatest feat is that "it exists" xD
Love the mention on the ANET A8, I have had mine for a while and can't believe the quality and accuracy of it.
Another great review Angus, I watched the live stream and now I'm really glad I didn't back this as I am very new to 3D printing so I would definitely have broken it. So thank you
I finally got mine . This is good info . I am glad there are videos and people making youtube videos. This is a learning tool for ages 8 and up .
Great review, Angus! Thanks for taking the bullet for us. :-)
Very honest and clear review!!
Still waiting for mine, but good to know to not expect that much from it. Thanks for the review!
Angus, you are my favourite 3d printing-related youtuber and my go-to whenever I need to get my fix for additive manufacturing, but the word you're looking for is "supposedly", not "supposably" :D
Haha good catch

Damn 49 dollars it showed... Soon these will be as common as the vcr/dvd player.

I was going to get that 3d printer before i saw this video. Thanks for the help
excellent and truthful review. Thanks.
Thank you for this bittersweet review. Still waiting for mine to arrive😩

You sure can, it's in the maintenance menu, along with the extrude and withdraw buttons.
Awesome! Thanks man.
Awesome review. You're very knowledgeable.
At least you received yours. Mine is still MIA! Great review and what I expected as well.

Second that engineering student amd I wanna pull the gun on a 3d printer for prototyping ;)
dude ive been waiting and praying you were going to say,"yeah got it going and its running great" but deep down i expected exactly what you said,im going the Anet
I would have loved this as a kid. I only had Creepy Crawlers for my young fabrication journey.
where can i found the blocks you printed? the rocket and the vase for example? thanks

I once jammed a NEMA 17. It still works. It just misses a few steps and continues working.
The stepper motor they use is, from what I've read, exactly the same as the type used in the original M3D printer.
Awesome! Where can I get good plastic like the one you are using to print on the 101 hero? Also what settings do you use to get the best out of it? I am using cura so have not dabbled with settings yet but how do I slow down the printer speed and improve other settings?
When you wobble the machine the vase on the top left also wobbles. 8:40. Afraid that it would fall lol
Wellmade review! U wish all internet reviews be made like this one.
Very good, video, could you explain how to configure the 101hero printer in sinplify3d?
Thank you very much!
mom can I have a 3d printer
mom : we already have a 3d printer at home
the 3d printer at home :
Please do a review of the Afinibot A9. I have one, and I'm quite pleased with it on quality verses price. I would like to know what you think.
8:05 - 8:10 !! How did u get the door out? I tried but then I gave up. ALSO how do you unscrew stretched screw heads? Thanks SOOOOO much!!!
I can see this being a good printer for people who are just starting to learn auto cad and all the different printing programs and wanting to start 3D printing
I got one for Christmas sooooo let's hope it works

great video and honest as always!
thx for the shout out to the FB group. over 550 members and growing every hour!
do you have a link for that spool holder?
I'll post it here for others too :) www.myminifactory.com/object/table-spool-holder-1631
Great vid
Pretty much spot on to what I was expecting. Oversize 3d printing pen.
Awesome stuff for kids!
28BYJ-48 motors have terrible backlash! I am curious about the drivers... Did they use the horrible ULN2003 or hack the motors to use DRV8825 / A4988 drivers?
I am running my upgradet tevo tarantula at 200-250 mms
Which i bought for 160€ in germany
Feel so sorry now that I backed this too. I still haven't got it though, and now I'm not even looking forward to get it.

I do plan on getting the MP mini select in a few weeks as I've heard some good things about it.
I just got a MP select mini but has a few problems. The extruder won't heat up and the temp reading is 350 c the moment you boot it up. Please help
Cool. Fascinating that there 3d printers that are so cheap now that "work".
Why would publishing G-Code generated by Simplify3D be a violation of its license? Can't find anything about that, and it would be ridiculous
I think it's something do with preventing someone setting up an online slicing service using it, as its intended for internal personal or business use. I could be wrong

If only this video was around before I ordered this in July of last year.
I bought the developer version from their website shortly after the Kisckstarter project ended.

Thanks for the great review. Hope someone here can redirect me for some good and simple help dealing with this printer.
Thank you.
can you recommend the best $100-$150 3d printer? is anet a8 still the best choice for budget 3d printer?
Great video, you should try to film in 24p instead of 50/60. It looks a lot nicer ;)
I wonder if it would be possible to replace the tiny motors with something from the NEMA range, like the NEMA 1. I mean, i don't doubt it would be expensive, but I thought it was an interesting concept

I was going to buy one last year, happy i didn't :)
could you modify the printer, like creating a heated bed or putting in better stepper motors or a better nozzel
You have to get the Mono Price MP Mini. I hear that Hobby King carriers it. You should be able to get one from them.
3:40 they're not called "pylons". In engineering, that setup is known as a "parallel manipulator". It has been around for sooo many years. There are also many manufacturing robots that use the same setup for pick and place applications.
its 2023 and I saw this on ebay fo £25 with upgrades.... I had to have it! I've never used such an early 3d printer, lets see what it can do ;)
Hi Angus currently I have the Monoprice select mini printer and have been looking to save for a decently cheep printer that prints rubber. What would you recommend?

The main problem is that it when im printing for example a calibration cube it ends of looking like a staircase. I dont know why but i think its called missed steps or something. How do i fix it?
gearmotors have extra slop that should show up when changing directions, which would compound any accuracy issues it already has
Fisher technic has a 3D printer. it's available here in Germany for 514,95€ and therefore really expensive. but since it's highly modular. the build volume can be expanded easily.
I don't think about getting the 101hero. I am currently looking at the Cetus3D when they can ship in February.
you just mentioned the Anet A8 as a good value product. I will find some reviews if it.
I really want to get a 3D printer but I think I'm going to wait a few years so I can get a printer that prints metal parts. What do u guys think?
i printed a gear on my bfb rapman in abs of about 10cm diameter on a non heated bed without warping
lmao savage roast at the end there :)
Could you review the Monoprice mini select
Cool thank you
hahaha "it belongs in a muzeum" it just came out... lol. i get what you meen though. i was in the stream. did u print a benchy already? :D cheers
if you print an item like an wasserjet cuter part, would it work? or is the printed item too fragile?
You should review the the Print Rite DIY 3D Printer
What you recommend to buy under 200€ on ebay, aliexpress or somewhere else?
I'm a mechanical engineering student, I like to play around in Inventor, I would like to know if there's a relatively affordable printer out there that has a good print quality, can print complex shapes easily, and works with inventor. Back in the lab on campus they have a really big expensive looking one that prints the stuff and then submerge ms the print in liquid to dissolve anotger plastic it prints for support... Or something. Idk I'm not very knowledgeable about 3d printers, lol
