- The Recording Academy has added three new categories to the Grammy Awards, including best African music performance, best pop dance recording and best alternative jazz album.
The changes were voted on and passed at the academy’s Board of Trustees meeting last month. The 66th Grammys, which now has 94 categories, will air live in early 2024. - Zábava

Why are we African rejoicing because Grammy added a new category with sub categories??? It’s high time we Africans stopped this madness about western validation. We can organize our own award scheme and make it a success. But knowing how inferior we think of ourselves, it probably wouldn’t work out. Really sad.

But know this - nobody can sing hip hop or rap music better than the Americans! It's the same way - no one can sing Afrobeats than the Nigerians! Do you know why? Music is not just about sound, or methods, it is more of the essence, these are culture, spirituality and aura!

These are basically the description of what the category can entail; the category mentioned here is BEST AFRICAN MUSIC PERFORMANCE. They didn't want to call it Afrobeats category to allow other African music genres. What it means is that all the other genres will have to compete with Afrobeats for the category. Afrobeats will overshadow it still, except if the other genrers can do better

with regards to what Joey Akan said; if we want to compete with them on a global level being able to penetrate their market and categories, they equally must be able to compete with us as well. They created their own award scheme and managed it well to the point where we want to be a part of it, so they dictate their rules basically.

Let's not be swollen-headed and overexcited yet but work even harder and lobby the Academy to nominate our songs when the eligibility window opens cos if we're not careful only Nigerian songs would be nominated. Currently on the Billboard US Afrobeats Chart, from No. 1 to 50, there's no Ghanaian song on it! - they're all Nigerian songs!!!
