    Well done and love that you jump in and learn new things.
    You really, really need to wear a respirator style mask with appropriate filters when working with this stuff (or any wood to be honest). From someone with lung issues I can't stress this enough. It's all cumulative and once your alveoli are damaged there's no recovery from that and every time you inhale these kinds of sensitizers it does irreversible damage. I don't want to sound all preachy but it's such a potential life changing thing for both you and your whole family that's so easy to do and the sooner you get into the habit of it when cutting or sanding anything (and even for a while afterward) the better it will be for your health.
    Keep up with all the learning and get yourself a nice comfy 3M respirator and some 209x series filters and wear them religiously!

    I'm quite impressed with this project and admire how you fearlessly approach such a complex task! I often have reservations with purchasing dimensional lumber like 1" x 4" from big box stores as they often are warped, cupped and not straight. Fitting counter tops is a precise task so you must have found straight boards to use as guides for routing the material. Great job !

    I’m planning on doing a solid surface project myself (1 practice on a moveable bench in my current mobile home for extra counter space) then on my barndominium which is going to replace my mobile on my property. After seeing your "patch and fill" technique I'd be tempted into drilling a hole with a counter sink and putting a bolt through the top and epoxying over the head.

    Drawback is they will melt if you leave a hot pan on them. Lots of upkeep compared to granite. Granite can be cheap option too if you diy it. Labor is usually 100% or more the cost of the slab

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  Před 2 lety

      I've not had an issue with heat on the counter, but I typically use hot pads. Would you mind sharing what tools are needed for cutting granite? I thought it required large specialty saws that cut in water like tile saws.

    • @peterottes6900
      @peterottes6900 Před 2 lety +3

      @@WelcometotheWoodsBlog I think that although granite is beautiful you have to shore up the flooring under the cabinets because of weight. And you can cut granite with diamond blades but water is involved to cool the blades down. You can buff the edges with a sander but dust is a factor. And placing the granite will be a trick with the weight..

    • @daddymae
      @daddymae Před 2 lety

      Solid surface doesn’t melt. It can be bent with heat but a fry pan will burn a ghost mark in it. Easily re surfaced/re polished or repaired.
      Granite.....harbors bacteria, chips, some species stain...often breakage at the sink, obvious joints/seams...needs periodic sanitizing and resealing...no warranty......I’ll take solid surface anyday. (20 years a top maker)

      @@WelcometotheWoodsBlog granite cutting requires diamond cutting and grinding gear because of heat and dust.
      The dust is quite harmful. Google it.
      Respiratory issues. It's an expensive market to break into.
      We avoided it for these reasons. Also the water used needs to be filtered or collected and not sent into the waste water grid.

    Great timing. I have an appointment tomorrow to get a quote on new really nice laminate vs solid surface vs trying to refinish the laminate i have. I dont think my house calls for expensive solid surface. I like this idea but it does look a bit daunting. Without revealing the price could you tell me where this lands between like a quartz and a quality laminate? Amazing Amazing job

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  Před 2 lety +1

      Definitely way cheaper than quartz. The two sheets were about $1600, the adhesive was $110 and the shipping was a couple hundred. If you only needed one sheet you could do this for right about $1k

      You can use many things...but one of the best is plain sheetrock mud ...it goes smoothly on and you can mix to the consistency that works for your application as well as enviroment ,humidity etc.in an area that is upper cabinet and wont be subject to abuse or smacking or banging like the base cabs...but the powdered firm of it.nit the kind already mixed with water in a bucket.that way you mix the amount you need it's not heavy won't mildew while in store room ..we often mix it with plaster of Paris powder for a more durable mixture...but I can also tell you. That we also won't do the patch method..since it takes a minimum of 2 or 3 coats or layers allowing for a dry time in-between also all the sanding in between then at the end sanding then priming at least 2times...so we will just cut a piece os Birch or maple or grain matching similar species as the other side cabinet..you can order a paper backed 1/16 "wood veneer from rocket or high supply.you can just cut it with a very sharp razor blade and straight edge...mask off for any over spray and use the 3m spray adhesive i.spray the cabinet and the wood strip on the paper side hold in position with removable masking tape it's presanded
