  • @cha5
    @cha5 Před 4 lety +10

My favorite Comic detectives outside of Batman.
    1. Dick Tracy:
What needs to be said about Chester Gould’s great detective who set the detective standard in comics from 1931 to the present day?
Not much, my favorite Tracy run will always be from 1931-1945 as he worked the mean bloody streets of Chicago along with a memorable supporting cast. Tracy will always be for me as essential to the detective genre as Phillip Marlowe and Sherlock Holmes were and with a rogues gallery that was an obvious inspiration for Batman’s rogues gallery.
    2. Will Eisner’s The Spirit:
Denny Colt was the essential detective who returned from the dead to continue his war on crime as The Spirit,
Eisner’s O’Henry style endings and his characters plus his use of noir elements in just a year before Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon explored similar on the silver screen is why I give The Spirit an obvious mention here.
    3. Jack Cole’s Plastic Man:
Plastic Man had started out as a crook but became a member of the police force after he gained his powers as the original “rubber man”,
He was a jester early on but he was also a committed detective.
    4. The Question:
Steve Ditko invented The Question and gave him a b&w view of world, But for me Denny O’Neil gave him his persona and made him one of the most memorable characters in DC Comics back in the 1980’s with reporter Vic Sage in his almost documentary observations of the human condition.
CBG publisher Maggie Thompson considered The Question one of the three only really believable characters in superhero comics as well.
    5. Mike Grell’s Jon Sable Freelance,
Jon Sable was a Mercenary and a veteran who would accept cases but also made a living, and even had a personal life with a date and a girlfriend or two.
    6. Rorschach: The man whose hunt for the man who killed Edward Blake the Comedian the stakes being possibly Armageddon.
    7. Gil Kane’s Inspector Bentley of Scotland Yard: An obscure Golden Age Detective series that really deserves to be reprinted, it was inspired by Jack Kirby’s art and Gil Kane’s early Art here is a personal favorite of mine. MLJ (Archie Comics) published it in Pep Comics.
    8. Fearless Fosdick: Al Capp’s parody of Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy that ran in his Lil Abner strip, Not by any means a “great detective” but more on the scale of Peter Sellers Inspector Closeau as a completely inept but memorable detective.
    9. Christian Walker, Deena Pilgrim: Brian M. Bendis & Michael Oemig’s two homicide detectives who investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities who are also referred to as “powers” were part of a memorable police procedural drama and were the two main characters in a story built around the mystery of who killed a heroine named Retro Girl and where Walker and Pilgrim’s investigations led as the story was built around these two characters and ran for several volumes.
    10. Parker: Not a detective but an unforgettable brutal but compelling antihero adapted by Darwyn Cooke from Donald Westlake’s Parker Stories,
It starts off with Cooke’s graphic novel ‘Parker’ and is a must read for any lover of mystery and detective stories.

Sherlock Holmes had a comic book series back in 1955 so yes he is a relevant comic character. I will also add that Batman came on the scene in 1939 so comics where already a big thing when Sherlock Holmes made his plunge into the comic world. Batman is also adapted to TV, movies, books, toys and so much more than Sherlock ever was... but I do believe their is a Batman animated series where Batman actually teams up with Sherlock Holmes and in the end Batman subtlety admits Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective ever!!!! But regardless I consider Batman #1 but Sherlock Holmes deserves a spot on any list that contains the greatest fictional comic detectives period.

@@scientia.veritas Hitler had his own comic book series???? I know he was depicted in many satirical and or propaganda films and literature. But I don't think he had a dedicated comic series unlike Sherlock that did have a comic series back then. My point is that Sherlock Holmes is and has been a comic detective. Hitler is completely irrelevant as he wasn't even a detective in any format and a terrible example.
