Will Canada be forced to up its military spending? | The Big Story

  • All NATO members are required to spend the equivalent of 2% of GDP on their military, and Canada has always fallen short of that benchmark. But now, more frequent domestic crises, mounting geopolitical turmoil, and harsh rhetoric from south of the border, may mean that it's time to put up or shut up when it comes to military spending.
So where do the biggest gaps in our capabilities exist? How difficult will it be to remedy them? And what sort of military do we as Canadians actually want?

Poland allowed a militia of some 40,000 personnel to be formed, which is totally funded by just people. Mr. Gurney did a great job in a short time. Almost exactly as I have been thinking, asking the same questions I am left with. A series of Canadian governments have given the military short shrift. We had been heading that way when Afghanistan happened and that war was the spending of the residual without the refurbishment. Then the constraints of balancing the budget by the Harper government. Then the joyous spending of the Trudeau government with joyous deficits ,with no actual increase in dollars but losing to inflation with the liberals immediately devalued dollar to 25% off the American dollar.
As I said a great synopsis by Mr. Gurney

@@ksmith4712 that was the balanced budget, if I recall. The intent was to maintain the dollar at close to par with the US $. The US was spending massive amounts on the Iraq/ Afghanistan wars. But the Canadian budgets were balanced.
Not the 1.2 Trillion, with the 31 billion deficit attached. On top of ever increasing taxes. The inflationary spiral started immediately after the Trudeau government was elected by increasing spending to allow a 25% drop in the dollar. Morneau had to have known this was going to eat away at the earnings and savings of responsible Canadians, but Trudeau was happy to let inflationary housing prices to offset his spending imagination.. The whole thing was a spiral with no responsible outcomes but managed tax increases.

"Will Canada be forced to up its military spending?"
That is an odd question, given what the ambassadors, NATO generals and others like them have said.
Canada is upping its military spending.
Has been for years, ever since the Conservatives were voted out, little by little, because that's the reasonable thing to do.
Also, why do you only care about monetary spending?

Spending on military is irrelevant. It is smoke and mirrors. A good chunk of military spending is for projects that aren't happening and the money returns to the government disappear into the ether. Government gets a sound bite and don't really have to spend the money. I'll also add that this money isn't really spent on the military, but is managed by procurement Canada. Again, only gets distributed to corporations favoured by the current government in return for nothing. I served from 1985 through to 2019 and watched $2B get spent not buying helicopters over this period. Another chunk of that money is for salaries. The money announced is done with these funds embedded as if we are at full strength. This means that again, almost 20% gets returned to government to disappear into the ether.
Always remember, the government is the biggest conman out there. Practically everything they say is not the really the truth.

It’s been proven in the past. As a Veteran I really hope Canadians wake up and realize how critical it is to maintain us. 🫡‼️🇨🇦
