- Norm visits the fabulous Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Built in 1880 by George Washington Vanderbilt, the 250-room French Renaissance-inspired chateau boasts a stunning collection of fine furniture including original Sheraton and Chippendale. Among the collection, Norm discovers a sophisticated mahogany dressing table with a foldaway mirror and graceful turned legs that he decides to replicate in The New Yankee Workshop. In the second of two episodes devoted to the making of an heirloom-quality dressing table found among the famed Biltmore Estate's collection, viewers find Norm in a national forest in North Carolina. There he learns how the U.S. Forest Service regulates the flow of timber to end users. Afterward he goes behind-the-scenes at a plywood mill in nearby Asheville to see how high-quality plywood is made.

I like The New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. I want it to come back on air on most PBS stations. Every Sunday.
I have visited Biltmore twice, once before Christmas when the decorations are amazing! Peter Sellers' final film "Being There." was largely shot at Biltmore. Its restaurant in the former coach-house is well worth a meal too.
30:30 Imagine the faces of the PBS accounting people if they got a reimbursement request with "National Forest Poplar - Raw" on it.
What an Impressive piece of furniture!
What an Impressive Master Craftsman Norm was and still is! Truly an Heirloom for sure even with the Plywood inclusion. That is the Yankee side. 😉
Thanks Norm!
Thanks Russ!
Another great tour and a great build. Wow what a mansion. Nice dressing table. Thanks Norm & Russ!
Keep 'em coming. 👍
Russ, thank you so very much for all you have done to bring these wonderful videos online. I’m old enough to remember when they first aired. I was a beginner then and my goal then was to learn something from each episode. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoy the show!
The plywood factory, Columbia Forest Products, is in McDowell County, NC. It produces plywood as it is ordered by wholesale customers.
@tonybressie
"I don't ever want to work there at all. Too hazardous and too exhausting."
Maybe so, but if you need to lose weight, all that activity will work wonders for your waistline.
@tonybressie 😎👍
@tonybressie "Too exhausting" just makes you sound like you're afraid of a bit of hard work so no danger of them hiring you.
Thank you for posting all of these videos!
I wonder where all the machines went after they left the New Yankee Workshop. that DL-40 was replaced by the Steel Bed 1642. the Rockwell Unisaw by that '95 model. the various drill presses, 14" bandsaws. the DJ-15 and the DC-33. Even that shaper we saw earlier on. There is no way they were offloaded in a "garage sale"
Best guess they may have gone back to the tool distributor - all were very much still good enough to be used in schools etc. The Rockwell Unisaw belonged to Russ and by the time it was replaced by the newer Unisaw he had owned it for nearly 30 years.
There's an interview with Norm from last year where he says he has or will have a shop in his new house he just built. I can imagine some of the tools in the basement of his old house. I also read somewhere that on Russ and Marion's Nantucket House, there's a second shop with the original table saw and perhaps other tools.
Most were on loan from the manufacturer and returned when swapped out. Some found their way to Norm's home workshop, but only the special ones 😀
@@newyankeeworkshop the truly special ones never left 😂 Im sure any die-hard NYW fan could spot those in a shop pic.
@@gregvolland9697 Everyone always wants to know what happened to the Timesaver though. 🤫
The mortiser is the tool I remember wanting the most of all the gadgets in the NYW
Wow, plywood with no voids. What happened to those days
Frankly, I’d like to see Norm build a bowling alley. Russ, can you bring him out of retirement to do that please?
Is it just me, or is the audio weird? Sounds like it’s slightly out of phase.
Hey, Russ, what do you like about this channel, in terms of uploading our favorite popular projects to this site?
Passing on Norm's skill, teaching ability and positive attitude to the next generation.
@newyankeeworkshop what is the make and model of the wood lathe please?
Also what wood species was used in the Biltmore desk?
There's an unofficial site that lists all of the tools. You'll have to search for it.
That's the Delta DL40 (46-400) Lathe. Not sure what the Biltmore desk was made of. It was a long time ago 😀
@@newyankeeworkshop thanks
Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.
