    Thank you for this excellent defense of the Mustang II. I remember when they first came out. I was about 8-9 and a man who lived next to my grandmother got one. I would go and stand at the fence and look at that car in his drive way for hours, hoping he would come out so I could talk to him about his car. Several times I asked him if I could wash it, but he would never let me. Anyway, I have great memories of that generation of Mustangs, and I still think they were among the best styled of the series. They were a product of their times ... and so am I.

    Glad to see some recognition for a great car. A 1975 coupe with the luxury décor group was my first new car. I loved the way it looked, but my father would only let me have the 4-cyl. and I only wanted an automatic. The car I traded was a 1968 Mercury Cougar. People just believed that a 4-cyl. would get better mileage, but that's not always the case. The 4-cyl. was OK for a Pinto, but the Mustang II weighed much more, due to the luxury emphasis. Mine got worse mileage than the Cougar, which had a 302 V-8. If I had gotten the V-8 in the Mustang II, I would have loved more than its looks. Nevertheless, it was a great looking car and very comfortable car.

Any time I’m at a show or cars and coffee and see a Mustang II I pay my respects because without those cars we wouldn’t have had the amazing machines that followed.

    I loved the clever and witty closing song of this excellent episode! Mustang IIs were everywhere back in the day, and even Aston Martins of that time bore more than a passing resemblance to it. It was a good looking design that was let down by the little bitty wheels and the anemic engines ubiquitous throughout the malaise era. It was wildly popular in spite of that, and I think it's unfairly maligned nowadays. Everyone I knew who had one loved it. Personally, I loathed the subsequent fox body that lasted way too long. Thanks for defending this underappreciated piece of automotive history. Wonderful, as always!

    The stang II is in my opinion undeservedly hated by muscle car purists.
    It was a decent enough car for the time, and some elements of its mechanical design (the front suspension design) became such basic standard elements for hot rodding on a budget that they're still in production by aftermarket companies too this day.
    Without the stang II we probably wouldn't have gotten the fox body mustang in its final form.
    And that's entirely dependent on if ford bothered too keep the nameplate around if the second gen model had been based on the torino and the new federal CAFE standards had come into effect just after launch leaving them holding the bag.

    • @christopherconard2831
      @christopherconard2831 Před 19 dny

      Mustang fans dislike it because it went back to the roots of the original Mustang, just a bit too much.
      But they fail to realize that without it there would likely have been no future Mustangs. Or at least, Ford would have continued on with the idea of the Mustang/Probe.
      By the early 70's they were following the same evolution as the Mercury Cougar. They were bloated parodies of what they once were. With the rise in popularity of the personal luxury coupe, Mustangs would have just gotten bigger and softer. When the luxury coupe popularity ended, the Mustang would have been dropped.

      I remember reading an interview with the director of Diamonds Are Forever where he spoke at length about the "absolute nightmare" that filming the mustang car chase was because the Mustang's he was given by ford to shoot the movie were so large, heavy, overpowered and ill handling that the stunt drivers were having a hard time controlling them in the alleyways.
      Even after they ripped everything they couldt out of the in in camera cars as they could to try and make them easier to control they still went through half a dozen of them just shooting that short 90 second scene.
      That's actually the reason why the continuity of the shot at the very end of the scene is completely wrong.
      When they shot that scene using a regular off the shelf 'stang (for continuity with the studio shot scenes with sean connery driving) the unibody actually cracked in half when the car flopped back onto all four wheels so they re-shot it using one of the stiffened stripped out stunt cars, but they shot it in such a rush that they didn't realize the car was driving on the wrong two wheels until they edited the movie.

People do not realize that the 74 remains the 4 th best selling mustang, and as you stated, we would not have a mustang today had it not bridged the gap between 73 ( love the car but horrible sales) and the 79 fox body. As a Mustang owner of first second and 4 th gen, i appreciate the work you did to accurately portray these cars. People forget the falcon was the basis for the mustang. The Mustang cult would have us all believe that every Mustang prior to and subsequent to the Mustang II was impossibly fast (and all Camaros were Z28s). But hundreds of thousands of them were 6 cylinder low-option cars that were bought for their looks by people who weren't interested in winning drag races, and you could buy a Fox body Mustang with a 4 cylinder engine for its entire model run. The people who gripe about the Mustang II not being a "real" Mustang have faulty memories, if they were even alive back then. The original Mustang was just an economy car in gym clothes too.
