Its fascinating to watch the progression of each character's acceptance of the situation. Each has their own threshold of how much they fear the government versus fear of radiation.

Sherbina (the one you heard on the phone talking to Lagazov) ends up my favorite character in this show by far. He grows and evolves substantially throughout the show. Great character development. Not sure if his character is 100% accurate but they did a fantastic job
But the series forgot a really important character in this whole Story. Of course Sherbina and Legasov organized everything.
But there was an engineer called Nikolai Steinberg who really did important things, like consulting and implementation of different work.
Also the architect of Prypjat Maria Protsenko was an important member of this.
Here is a sort of standard comment I have posted on a lot of the reactions to this series that I come across...hope you don't mind me copy/pasting it here. One thing I will add, is that the more you learn about the history of the RBMK reactor and of the Chernobyl power plant, the more you find that a lot of context is left out of the show, and it could have been more accurate if it had revealed some of that. Also, it is important to remember that this show has very few lessons regarding nuclear power in the West...it pretty much only applies to the Soviet Union or other similar totalitarian society.
This a really good series...one of the best ever made...but the producers did get some things wrong. Some things were changed intentionally for the purposes of storytelling, and the makers of the series put in a series of notes at the end of the last episode of the series explaining some of them. They also have a podcast that they put out along with the show in which they talk about other things they altered from the history and why. However, I do recommend you check out the History vs Hollywood article on Chernobyl when you are done watching the whole series, so you can find out about the other things that the producers got wrong that they do not admit to. Definitely wait until you are done with the series so you do not spoil anything for yourselves.

Radiation essentially has the effect of being burnt hence why it's called radiation burns. The radiation strips off the electrons from atoms in the cells which essentially kills the cell. The effect is not as immediate as the show depicts but they chose to make it more visible for narrative purposes. In reality it would take a little while before you notice that your skin become red from the burns. Sort of like getting a sunburn. The difference is also that particles that emit radiation gets breathe in so that you are basically getting irradiated from the inside which is ofc more dangerous than getting a burn on your skin. That is why iodine is important because one of the byproducts in the spent nuclear fuel is radioactive iodine which gets absorbed by the body and accumulates in the thyroid. By taking normal iodine you fill up the body's deposit of iodine so that it does not take up any of the radioactive iodine.

I love that your dad has understanding of shit union. Mine was shit union submariner, visited Egypt in cold war times.
So this is a really simple layman's understanding of how radiation works with the human body, so take it with a grain of salt, but basically your body is always breaking down and repairing itself. The irradiated particles are moving so fast with so much energy, they not only tear up your body, liking getting hit with millions and millions of tiny bullets, but also punch holes in your DNA and RNA, so it prevents the cells from copying themselves to repair the damage. With low doses this will result in cancer in the long term. With high doses you are essentially torn to shreds and begin decomposing while you are still alive. Once again, this is probably about 50% accurate, but that's how it was explained to me by a nuclear engineer as sort of a brief explanation for the uninitiated.
You two should watch the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven directed by Ridley Scott. I think you're dad would really enjoy it. He also may enjoy East Beirut (1998).

Hi Guys. First thing you need to understand is the Soviet mentality. Image is the most important thing to them. If there is an accident its to be made light or and denied. To report it is as bad as the incident itself. The Soviet reactor program was classified as secret by the KGB (Soviet Secret Police) So thats why the workers and people have no safety equipment, procedures in place. The series is historically by they do take Film makers license with the radiation.
If your at a spot where a nuclear bomb goes off you did from the heat not the radiation. Radiation does not affect you right off. It works slowly over days, weeks, months, years., depending on level of exposure. Once an exposed person has their clothing removed and body washed you cannot get any radiation from them.
A person in the Soviet Union cannot refuse an order to do something. If you do your shot on the spot or sent off to prison. The series get worse with each episode so be ready. You will not find out what and how the explosion occured until the last episode.
Modern nuclear reactors are pretty safe, and these kind of reactors are not working anymore.
I was born in January 1986, a neighboring country to Ukraine. My country was in the Soviet block, so people here didn't know about the accident for 2 weeks, if I remember correctly.
The officials acted like nothing happened, let people celebrate 1st of May, let them eat the contaminated food.
In my family I am the only one who has autoimmune diseases, one of them affects my thyroid.
Officials in Ukraine still measure the radiation close to Chernobyl because people are still effected by it, especially children. Birth defects are very high.
One of the *diotic prime ministers of Ukraine wanted to create a commune or something in the contaminated zone.
