The general who drove through the plant to get an accurate reading is named Vladimir Pikalov. He was a decorated WWII soldier who fought in the Battles of Moscow, Kursk and Stalingrad. After those battles, he had no fear of heading for that power plant.

Because of his Rank and etc. the Results couldn't get talket down like the Workers of the Plant from Djatlow who denied the Truth of the core exploding, just because he didn't know how.. it's good to mention that radiation can't be spread from person to person, it's more likely spread by touching irradiated items that someone who got a "radiation shower" was carrying on them.
the firefighter's clothes pile is still there, but the people were taken care of until they died or recovered.

2:49 those piles of clothes are real and are still inside the basement of the hospital in Pripyat.
22:04 three of the bravest men to live. Knowing you will most likely die probably the most horrible death imaginable. No pain medication can help. No cure.
Also, Oppenheimer is not responsible for this as a result of his work. His task didn’t result in nuclear power plants. He didn’t even discover the way to split the atom, which is ultimately how a nuclear power plant works. It was a British and Irish physicist, John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton. Oppenheimer was only responsible for overseeing the Manhattan Project that was responsible for creating the atomic bomb. His role in the actual hard science of even the Manhattan Project is disputed, as over 130,000 people were directly involved. Oppenheimer’s main position was overseeing the other main science teams. It doesn’t mean he was the one crunching numbers and experimenting with machines.
What was really responsible for Chernobyl was Socialism/Communism almost always taking shortcuts or cost saving measures to achieve the same goals as a Capitalist society (if you want me to type out an entire book as to why this has always happened throughout history, I unfortunately cannot as CZcams has a limit on how long a comment can be). The cheaper graphite tipped fuel rods combined with general incompetency combined with the continuing cycle of blaming someone else is the real reason why this disaster happened. You will find out.

I mean it's not even slightly different here in hypercapitalism. Boeing's quality control specifically went in the toilet upon their acquisition and merger with Douglas, that was like 40 years ago. The military industrial complex goes with the cheapest options, and the natural tendencies towards monopolies in capitalism lead to a complete eradication of competition and option, look at the damage Tyson chicken is doing, look at the damage oil companies do.

Half a year late, but just in case anyone is watching this only now and wondering: Baranov passed away in 2005, aged 64. Bespalov and Ananenko were both living in Kyiv until at least 2019, their whereabouts are unknown due to the russian invasion.
All three were awarded the title Hero of Ukraine, Ukraine's highest decoration of honour, in 2019, Baranov posthumously, obviously.

I remember my high school PE teacher telling us that he'd been travelling near Ukraine when Chernobyl exploded. He said he'd been on an overnight train and if the wind had been blowing towards him that night, he would have been affected by the radiation. It was terrifying to hear at fourteen years old without too much knowledge about the accident. One of the things about it that shocked me was that the other reactors were still running afterwards. They were gradually shut down due to other incidents but were only completely shut down in 2000. 2015 was when they started being decommissioned.

    First?
    Typical comment...copy/pasted here...
In this episode, there were a few things the makers of the show changed for various reasons. For one thing, the character who said that they should close off the city in the first episode and is evacuated in this one, did not exist...he was added for dramatic purposes. Also, the helicopter crash did not happen so soon after the explosion...it really happened months later in October, 1986, and had little to do with radiation. As I mentioned in my comment to episode 1, once you are done with the series, the History vs Hollywood article on the show is a must read.

They didn't tell you the timeline in the show for the most part. The helicopter crashed a couple of months later I think. It wasn't the radiation that took it down. It hit the cable on the crane next to the reactor and crashed from physical damage. You can actually see it in the show but you have to know what to look for.

There were many changes made. Just like Legasov and Sherbina. They were important characters but the series don't show many other important persons involved in the disaster managment like Maria Protsenko architect of Prypjat and Nicolai Steinberg an engineer of Tschernobyl.
Also not everybody from the control room and the firefighters died while incident. Some or them died few years ago.

Those 3 men are true heroes and it's sad that the world only gets to know about them through this tv series. The helicopter crash was real but misleading. The helicopter crashes because the main rotor impacts a cable hanging from that nearby crane and not because of radiation.

Remember this is the 1st time this has ever happened. So when people do dumb things it's because they don't know or don't know what the effects truly are. It's easy to say now what not to do but that's because of this event. And the guy on the right would have not lasted long in Soviet Russia. If you know you know

    • @myegyptiandadreacts4824

So it was just people unwittingly doing their best to solve a new problem? Were there no lies? No denial? Did they hesitate to believe a scale with a maximum of 3.6 roentgens? Didn’t Akimov have concerns that Dyatlov ignored? News of the firemen getting sick and public concern that the radiation is much stronger that the leaders purposefully didn’t atleast consider or investigate? Complete denial is the natural reaction for that time? Dyatlov throwing up, then they sent that other guy on the roof, did they not suspect a risk?
I’m not blaming them for the event, but the way they handled it after the explosion could’ve been better, even for their time, that’s why other European countries advised people from leaving their homes and Russia did not.
Besides the entire theme of the show seems to be about lies and their cost.

@@myegyptiandadreacts4824 Late to the party but - this occurred in the USSR. A very specific way of governing at the time. Image was everything, and you did _not_ question your higher ups. Secrecy was the order of the day, and suspicion ran rampant (hence the KGB keeping tabs on Legasov - heck, everyone, really). People could often end up in power not because of knowledge, but because of their place in the party. Not a democracy, not even close. Citizens were beholden to the State, and the concept of freedom wasn't really present - if the State tells you to move, you move. If the State tells you to lie, you lie. The consequences of disobedience were often *very* intense...

So this episode contains a long standing soviet lie that is simply not true. There no danger of any kind of a thermo explosion if the Corium(Lava) reached the Bubbler tank below, in reality, if water can get in steam can get out. At worst they would have created a radiation contaminated geyser, a soviet politician made up this scenerio to make it seem like the Soviet Union was saving the rest of the Soviet bloc from a catastrophy.

This whole show is very dramatized. Even in the first episode, when the people from the city of Pripyat went to the railway bridge to have a better look, it is not true. In reality, nobody stood on that bridge. People didn't even go outside. The Chernobyl power plant is nicely visible from every apartment's window.
