- Here is how I hem my jeans while keeping the original hem. You need to have some basic sewing machine skills to complete this.

Thanks for the great how to video - I’m 5’2” and most jeans are too long. I just tailored my jeans using this method and it worked great!
Had a fantastic pair of jeans in the closet for six months...was afraid to ruin with a lumpy hem job. Saw your video and it gave me the confidence to try this. It worked wonders! It looks so good, I'm really pleased with the results. Thank you!
As others have pointed out earlier, there’s a fundamental error in these instructions that leave the legs too short.
After folding the hem up to find the new length, you need to measure this total length (turned up from new bottom edge to the old hem edge including the hem). You then halve this value, and reposition the old hem so that the turnup excluding the hem is set at this amount.
Note that the original measurement includes the hem depth but the hem is excluded when setting the new turnup for sewing.
My thought exactly as I viewed this. I'm not sure how all those who followed these instructions didn't gripe that they were too short.
I'm too dumb for this😭😭😭

Thanks
My thoughts exactly, that's why o thought I'd check out a few tutorials.
Thank you for this tutorial. This saves me $20 for every time I need pants hemmed (short people problems).

I’m short. I like this trick because rolled cuffs make me feel shorter. It feels like my mom rolled my school pants at the beginning of the school year..
I work in jeans, so I have a lot and at $20 each, my closet has $180 of needed hem work. No one sells less than 30 L, at 40 W up.
I'm pretty sure half of all mass shootings are motivated by short people that can't buy pants that fit out of the store as-is.
You just make me LOL😀!
This was my first time hemming up my jeans. Used this tutorial exactly and they came out perfect! So easy to do. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this short video. I've seen others that are longer doing kinda the same thing but they seem a bit complicated and yours is super easy and understandable. I am a beginner and I want to fix one of my jeans that are way too long. Thank you.
Thank you for this very simple and great video!!! actually i have 4 jeans pants that need shorting and i bought a sewing machine just to do that !! I am glad that i waited for months to shorten them !! I just wear them and bend them to the right length .. now I know how to shorted them and keep the original stitching!!
Best tutorial I’ve seen for this. Everyone else made it seem so much more complicated! Thanks!
Thank you for the most complete tutorial I've seen for shortening jeans the easier way.
Thank you so much for this. I've watched a few vids on this and yours is by far the easiest to understand. Clear and straight to the point.
I followed your instructions and my slacks are now the perfect length with a professional look. Thanks so much for your easy to follow instructions!
This has got to be the most straightforward video I have seen to keep the original hem. So simple. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you! I have a pair of jeans waiting to be hemmed and this technique is just what I needed to know.
That's awesome! I totally needed to see this. As a shorter, stubbier guy at 5'5, I always have trouble finding pants and jeans at that perfect 28.5" inseam length. The short/regular length is always 30" (sometimes 29"). All the pants I buy are long af and go past my heel to the floor.
A Dream
I too find it amazing that a 30” waist comes with a 30” inseam and to get a shorter 29” inseam you have to have a 34”!waist. Those of us 5’5” have to get fatter to get shorter inseams.
I am in the same boat. I'm pretty thin and am also 5'5 and they just don't make pants with my measurements. I take a 30" waist and about a 27 length but they just DO NOT have 27s at most regular places. Learning to hem has been a lifesaver
I just want to say thankyou very much for this video! I did this on 2 pairs of smarter jeans rather then just doing a cuff style for shortening them. It was much appreciated 🙏
just done my first pair of jeans following your guide for the first time i think they look fine . thank you
The way you have explained and way you donjob is absolutely brilliant thank you so much
I never thought about doing it this way, mindblowing idea.
ThankYOU ! 💙👌
Just a great video.Wish I’d seen this video years ago.Jeans look great with original hem.Do mine by hand,as I do not know how to use a sewing machine.Still looks great by hand. Thanks again
at last i found someone the explained it a way that's so not complicated
I really like the way you explain everything. Thank you.
You make it look so easy,,1,2,3..
great video.
thanks
Woohoo! That was intense! Thank you🙏 I'm about to shorten my jeans using your method 🙌🥰
Thanks for this video, he was very informative into the point, my question is how do you do a wide leg hem, would it be the same
GREAT JOB GIRL.... YOU GO.. THERE ARE ALWAYS GONNA BE HATERS. BUT YOU REALY DID A GREAT JOB. I SEW A LOT NOT BY ANY VIDEOS BUT LEARNED ON MY OWN, I DO BY HAND AND WITH A MACHINE SO THANK YOU FOR YOU GREAT VIDEO, AND YES WE NEED MORE...
Hi Amanda, thank you for the tutorial :) will try it today... just a little question. Practically, this should work on sleeves of a coat too, right? Thank you for your kind advise
Thanks for the informative video! I can ho it the old way, but going to give this a try. I think the jeans look more finished with their original hem.
Thank you sooo much for this video!! I’m short, so I always need to alter my jeans!
Thanks. I needed that. I'm about 6'with a 28"L.
Dear Life at Cloverhill-
Does this work if your jeans are tapered??? If they are tapered can this sill be done without too much rigamarole?
Thanks a BUNCH!!!
Great video. Never knew it would be so simple.
u r so brillant and pro , can you tell me which brand is your sewing machine and thanks
Thanks so much for this! Very logically and simply explained.
Thanks for the tutorial. Can I hand sew since I don't have sewing machine or will it bee too difficult?
Thank you for your useful clip, I shorten my jean with this method and am satisfied of it
this was so simple and easy to follow..thank you so much
I always wondered how that was done . Thanks. New wrinkle on the brain.
joseph burtulato .....
this isnt the proper way but its a quicker one
Hi, can you share what kind of sewing machine that is? Thank you for the video!
U just got new subscriber ...plz tell me what kinnda machine should I use for stiching jeans
Very clear instruction! Thank you!👍
Nice! What kind of niddle thickness/size to use for jeans sewing? Thanks!
excellent video i love all the extra pointers
Can you use this same procedure to make shorter jeans, knee length?
So easy and well explained. Many thanks.
Terrific instructional video! Thanks for sharing!
Great ... I just made the job and it's perfect. Thanks a lot.
I like the way you explain this
wow amazing & i need to learn how to run or hook up thread to my sewing machine...
The second row of stitching makes the hem--thx for the reminder.
also possible with hand & needle ?:D
I learned something new thanks
Me too
Me too
Me three
Wow! The first sewing video that I've ever watched! Thank you!!!
Brilliant video, could do with one on the waist also.
I'm about to ask someone to do this type of hem for me. I know he'll do it well, but I also want to cuff my jeans from time to time. I don't want the inside of the jean to look too different, so what do I ask him to do? Do I ask him to use thread (on the inside) that doesn't contrast too much with the inside of the jean? That's the only thing I can think of.
Amazing, very nice n simple to understand and excite,Thanks!
Thanks for this video. It was very easy to understand.
Finaly a video that I understood well what was going on.
Tutorial was shown so so Perfect. I done it easily at the first go. Happy 😃 😃 🙏🏼
i needed this video, i do all my sewing
the best tutorial. Thanks so much
Thank you. Easy to follow instructions.
What presser foot do you use
New to altering/sewing. Can someone please explain to me why other videos suggest to cut the measurement in half?
I do the same to slim down my jeans to keep the original vertical seam.
If you shorten your jeans 1 1/2" than they will be shortened 3". You have to divide the number you want shortened in half and then turn up the hem!
Brilliant... my wife has just taken up a couple of pairs of my trousers. Very professional job! Unfortunately, she also managed to 'machine sew' one of her lovely nails... not so professional!
.
Lol
going to try this on my new jeans, they are wayyy too long but I think if I shrink them in the wash and re-hem them they would be gorgeous. does anyone know if it's risky shrinking denim in the wash?
Even though I am just an amateur sewing machine user I prefer to make my own jean hem. It is more for-filling than to have that overlap at the bottom of the jeans.
Thank you for this amazing video
Just a tip: Sometimes the factory will make legs different lengths so measure and also, some people have uneven legs. Don’t measure...just fold BOTH LEGS and then fold each pant leg to figure out what you need to do.
What I don't get is, if the folded up bottom edge is the length you want then you sew the original bottom 1.5 Inches up, won't it now be too short (As if you are sewing it 3 inches higher overall shorter now?)
I'm confused on that too. This is the second video I've watched on this method, and I still can't figure out how it works by hemming it in half. I realize my original jean hem is 3/4 of a inch, but not 1.5 inches.
@@dawnpatterson9257 I would iron along the hemline that you want as a guide, (in the video its 1.5 inches up). Then re fold the old hem edge so that it sits along this ironed line (this would then leave a folded waste part of HALF the original fold (in this instance 3/4 of an inch). This is because its doubled up so that overall shortening will be 1.5 inches Instead of the 3 inches she wrongly uses. Then sew along your original hem piece you want to keep. This will then be the correct length.
Whatever your folded up piece measures, sew half way to this measurement as the explanation is wrong in the video.
Exactly thats confusing. I could have sworn she tugged them down too after she sewed them and tried on lol. Think your supposed to move like half dow or something im soo confused.
I thought the same thing! She did this wrong!
Why not just cut of the excess and turn them over and sow with orange thread It works for me and it looks good?
Hey! Can we do this for cargo pants also?
Thanks for posting this. I suffer from height deficiency😂 and am tired of cuffing my pants, again, Thank You👍
If you wanted to cut one and a half inches off, with this method, You were cutting 3 inches off. Furthermore, when done and the edge is folded down, the jean will be half inch longer than you measured because of the folding edge.
How do you hem tapered legs?
Does this work on flares?
could this be done by hand? or is thaat just a daydream? i love your vids!!
Except for the math problem your video explained the actual sewing process the best. I think your supposed to minus the half inch. I only have used fabric glue on mine, it came out well. It highlighted my chelsea boots. One side was larger than the other but no one knows that except me. I've got the sewing machine but have no idea how to sew. I guess I will learn.
I did thats type of tips i love it
could you do this if the pants is tapered at the bottom ?
Hi.. :) thank you for sharing.. God Bless
Why can't you cut it to length and sew it once with yellow thread?
Love this video
Thank you! Now I can FINALLY hem my husbands pants! Great tutorial ❤
But it is wrong!
Don't do it! It might lead to a divorce.
That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Hlo , can we shorten our jeans by hand also ....plzzz reply.
Thank you for sharing this video.
Thanks for the great tutorial.
Thank you very much for the video. God bless you
can this technique be used for all types of pants?
Genius! Pure GENIUS...🤩🤩🤩!!!
Love your video!
honestly, on those specific pants, the hem looks easy to recreate.
1. mark the spot where you want your pant's to fall, I suggest using chalk. Pinning is okay, but it's annoying to deal with on a sewing machine.
2. measure from the bottom of the pants to the stitching of the original hem
3. mark the spot below the desired hem line (from step 1) that is 1.5 to 2 times the distance of step 2. If the distance is longer than the pants, you will need to get a seam ripper and rip open the original hem, unravel it, press it flat, and then mark it
4. cut along the line of step 3.
5. fold up the pants hem to half way between the line marked at step 1 (or all the way up to the line marked in step 1 if you went as far as 2x) and press w/iron. Make sure it's pressed well!
6. Fold up the hem onto itself to the line you marked at step 1 and press like your life depends on it. This should hide the frayed/exposed portion of the denim. This should be 3 layers of denim, which can give issues to sowing machines trouble if they don't have a denim/jean needle.
7. Sew as close to the top of the hem as you can - it'll prevent the hem from snagging when you put your pants on. You'll want to use the same color thread as your pants original hem. Go slow, go in a straight line. Don't forget to backstitch when you start, and when you finish. Before you start sowing, make sure you line up the hem's inseam/outseam with the pant's inseam/outseam. It's a small detail, but it's noticeable if you like to cuff your pants (if you're into that)
Where can I purchase one of these machines ?
Trying to do this for a pair of super flared jeans.. I feel like it will be way harder
your the best man
Thank u so much
thanks for easy and clear!
That was excellent. Thank you.
