💌 about me: my name is Elysse, I'm 22 years old from the southern U.S. I've been learning languages for about 8 years, and I speak English (native), Spanish (C2), German (B2/C1), Portuguese (B2), French (B1/B2), American Sign Language (advanced), and Turkish (A1). Okay, I cannot stress this enough, on how learning languages by using music to study has helped me. I studied French in highschool and was pretty average. After 4 years I decided to get back to French. I picked my current favourite song in French and really tried to pay attention to the lyrics just by listening every day (in my daily routine) Then I wrote them down and tried to properly pronounce them. Then I tried picking words that I knew what they meant and translated the rest by trial and error. By doing this I progressed so much not just with French. I now know the most basic words used in 2-3 languages by doing these things with songs.
Yesss it's like a real-life application of the most common 1000 words. Way more effective than just memorizing off a list
Without music, German would've been much harder for me to learn and much less enjoyable😌

I’m currently learning German and was considering playing games in the language because I thought it’d be helpful and then this came out so I’ll definitely try that. The recording myself speaking sounds like a cool idea too
try out both! that’s a good combo since they’re practicing diff skills
Recording yourself does sound cool but when I once tried it I couldn't help but cringe at my voice . so much so that I hate my voice both when I speak my language and my second language. Any tips on what should I do? I just dont like the way I sound and than the fact the fact that I'm making mistakes makes me look like an idiot so I dont record myself anymore. However I do talk to myself quite frequently in my target language and I believe it has a similar effect as recording oneself. I guess whatever for works for you.

In my personal experience, watching SpongeBob in Russian has been such a game changer for me. I've been learning Russian for the last few months now, and damn I've had hard times trying to understand podcasts or shows or music or whatever it is, but with cartoons like SpongeBob or Cheburashka (which is a soviet cartoon) I feel like all these months of effort are finally paying off. I highly recommend watching cartoons, specially if these are not foreign cartoons; that's a great advantage for Russian learners, there are a lot of soviet cartoons which you can easily find online or cartoons made for kids to learn Russian; these last ones are great, you can try finding cartoons meant for kids to learn their native language.

When I was 12/13 ish I learnt a lot of vocabulary watching the Shrek movies with english subtitles, so I highly recommend that metod :)

16:15 Personally I recommended the app Slowly. It's an app where you can write to ppl that have your same interest all around the world. You can find penpals through a simple research on the app if you put your languages (and your level in those languages) and the interests you have and the app recommend you some ppl you might like to talk to. You can filter out ppl too in your research. Also everyone can create a little cute avatar to interact with other ppl. The fun thing (or not, it depends on who use the app lol) is that the letter will take a bit to get to the other person, depending on where that person is situated, exactly like it would happen if you sent a letter irl.
8:13 Reading children's books can be surprising because we realize, while we learn a language (as grown-ups), there are lots of gaps. Simple words kids know and we don't just because we were too prideful to read a simple and yet rich book.
Yes to the crosswords! They're also useful for learning pop culture

Here are some of my thoughts on the video:
2:16 I feel that when you try to learn a different dialect, it becomes a slippery slope of learning a different language. I remember trying to learn Austrian German by reading news from South Tyrol, Italy which turned into trying to learn Cimbrian. About 6 years ago, someone dubbled a lot of 2012 viral videos in Luxembourgish; it is really funny to hear if you speak German.
7:40 Reading books in German is nice because one can finally see the simple past being used. It also helps one build up the cultural knowledge of the language. I am currently reading the play Faust, so I can understand the meaning behind "the Faustian Spirit". One can also notice the differences in when the spelling reforms took place. z.B. daß anstatt dass.
9:50 Playing video games in different languages depends on the language as well as the game. With some games, the message gets lost in translation/poorly translated. When I am playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City on the Switch, it says "Außer Gefecht" anstatt "Wasted" and everything else gets toned down completely. Pokemon is an absolute pain because one has to relearn all of the pokemon's names, moves, abilities. Animal Crossings is actually very good because one learn words that are not frequently used as well as the game makes puns about the animals when you catch them. In Mario Sunshine, the German version feels like one is a tourist in Italy and the English version feels like a fantasy land. The localization really makes a difference.
16:15 If one wants to find a penpal, Slowly is a good app. It is completely anonymous, so one does not have to worry about the strange people amongst us. One can also filter the people by language skill, country, and topic.

Here is a little tip : I listen to music a lot, like straight 2-3 hours per day. One day i was just looking for new bands and i ve noticed, i've never listened any German metal bands before when i just saw Rammstein's Herzeleid album. I just loved their music, and obsessed with them and Neue Deutsche Härte. After this i started to learn German by Translating the lyrics to english and memorising the German lyrics. With this method i memorised like %75 percent of their songs lyrics, this made me to have a decent German knowledge, then i did practiced a lot by grammer books and stuff.
The idea of this method is : Learning language is a something that you can made with emotions. If you have any positive emotion or love to a specific country or language you get a boost. I already had a love for Germany and when i see Neue Deutsche Härte, it made the progress even easier. But for example i can't learn french easily because, I am not insterested in French movies,music,things from France and i dont have any French friends. I don't have any emotional connection with France/French makes the learning harder.

I agree with you at a 100% in the fact that you need to have some type of emotional connection to the language/country! Right now i'm learning italian, and I have always liked italian food, their beaches, although I haven't had the chance to travel to Italy. But, recently I have been watching tv shows that I really love, and guess what, they took part in Italy! So it's been a fun journey to learn italian

It is very nice to have someone to pratice and learn language together. I've been practice english with a guy from Colombia, and i noiticed that since I've started to talk to someone in english may conversation skills has become better. I'm a native speaker of brazilian portuguese, I'm interested in learning english, japanese, chinese and german. I've just started to read some books in english to learn new words.

Yess I used to love doing crosswords in another language!! I took German all thru high school and my teacher would give them to us as practice! So much fun!!

My spanish teacher in 7th grade actually had us use lyrics training and it was really helpful/fun!
I learn danish and there's not that many resources for it but I do most of the things you suggested and they really help me!

Thank you for these tips! I play scrabble on Words With Friends & recently discovered that I could play in Spanish in practice mode. I’m kinda struggling a bit to make spanish words out of random letters & have mostly ended up with 2- or 3-letter words but weirdly I’m beating the computer…🤷♀️
I like the idea of laddering (I’ll have to wait a while to try this though) & watching cartoons in my target language/s. Also, learning backwards by listening to podcasts & videos is something I’m going to try as well! ¡Gracias! ✨

Wait crosswords are a great idea! Ive tried kids books, music, changing my phone to target language, watching shows/vlogs in the target language, podcasts, video games (vr), etc. Its hard language learning with adhd since i lose interest and get bored so i jump from method to method to try to sustain interest, and now i have a new method to try!
I dont know if this would be considered a different dialect like you mean, but im learning dutch and got a flemish teacher for some variety lol. Maybe i should try out afrikaans when i need a boost of motivation for dutch😂
Im also a travel guide, so i have tried the on the ground immersion method through traveling too, and i even lived in korea for 2 years lol

But! my favorite way to just get my foot in the door when learning a new language is definitely Pimsleur. I'm not the biggest fan of language apps like Duolingo or even rosetta stone, but Pimsleur focuses entirely on hearing and repeating (just like how you learn your native tongue as a baby) which is why its so affective! i later use language text books because I love taking notes or listening to podcasts!

I'm not actively learning a language although yes I do learn english but I'm not learning any new language in a sense that I'm starting it all from scratch. Also learning english has been very challenging for me primarily because I had no options to practice it also I'm not very fond of the idea of befriending strangers on the internet and improving my English that way. One more thing and this is kinda interesting that I've observed that although yes people do speak english in my country but it's no where good as other people who speak English as a second or third language in other parts of the world. In my place English is spoken weirdly like If i were to use the phrases that native speakers use in real life than no one would get me. Anyways what has helped me is watching tons of content in English and finding things that I'm interested in being covered in English. I've no plans in learning any other language as for now. However god knows when I'd have a change of mind and these tips would come in handy.

@@RealMysticalMan I truly appreciate this comment. I've seen people on the internet say that English is the easiest language to learn and it bugs me. It's a subjective thing and there are many factors. People who do pick on English (or any other language) without having to do much of the weight lifting were either exposed to that english much earlier on their lives so they've got that language just like they've got their native languages. Or it could be that now they are in that in environment where English is used heavily so they are constantly immersed in it and they dont have to study twice as hard. It starts coming to them naturally. My case : neither of it. I don't have that environment where English is used much so it gets challenging once I do have to use english. Anyways I just ranted.
learning a european language in australia is so hard because most people here only learn asian languages due to location and ur pretty unlikely to find people who speak european languages (specifically in my unknown, silly little state) especially ones that aren’t hugely popular, i’m an australian learning swedish so it’s definitely an odd choice lmao, i highly doubt there’s even a swedish speaker in the state i live in and there’s not any resources in person so i’ve been trying to find ways to learn when i can’t speak with anyone or learn from anyone in person and definitely can’t travel due to money, in on the other side of the world so unfortunately that’s not an option lmao. i also have very bad anxiety so i can’t actually talk to people, even over the internet, but i’m hoping some of these that don’t include social interaction get me a little further

I need to divorce from English to really improve my game in German and Mandarin. It's funny how it took over my life almost entirely because my offline life is entirely in Spanish and my online one almost completely in English.

great tips 💫 i was wondering how can i approach to journal in a language i'm just starting to learn when i don't know much vocabulary, should i just keep it VERY simple at first and try to implement new vocabulary as i go? it scares me but i always hear people advicing to journal and i never do it
for sure! as long as you can construct basic sentences you're in good shape. you don't need to write a ton, just write about what you can!
