This is one of my favorite tricks from all of Gabi’s repertoire. At a technical level, it’s just a couple of simple techniques and a classic sleight that’s rarely used these days. The effect within is also known (along the lines of the “Partagas Sell” or “Dunbury Delusion”), but what has been changed entirely is the approach. Gabi removed the classic sucker finale (that annoying “gotcha” feeling) from this kind of effect through an apparent failure due to the spectator “not believing.” When he asks that they believe and once they’ve accepted his plea… the three cards on the table are turned over to remember the position indicated by the last one (not to demonstrate that the chosen card is not there) and suddenly… everything changes. The spectator’s perspective shifts dramatically and suddenly they hope for the trick to work, without worrying about how. For me, this is one of the effects that best defines the often mis-interpreted fictional magic, which doesn’t consist of telling stories, legends or playing a character (fictional magic is one thing, magic with fiction is another). Instead, without our art losing any impossible conditions, offers the spectator an interesting proposition, so that they’re emotionally hooked, with the impossibility as a vehicle and not as a means to an end. Fictional magic does not allude to the trickery (understood as secret method) but, in order not to lose clarity, the initial situation is clearly defined and other concepts re-enforce the impossibility by actions, not words, choosing carefully your speech to avoid talking explicitly about the “trickery”, without perverting/distorting the spectators’ experience. This rendition was recorded in the Museum Theater El Rei de la Magia in 2012, during a festival where Gabi performed 24 hours of magic straight, all with cards, and without repeating a single effect. Only a few of those effects were recorded… but my god, what effects! Thanks to Florian Brooks, Raahul Srinivasan and Victor Piña for their help with translating. In this effect, each word matters. Este es uno de mis juegos favoritos de todo el repertorio de Gabi. A nivel técnico no tiene más que un par de pases y una maniobra tan clásica como poco utilizada en nuestros días. El efecto en sí es también conocido (en la línea del “Partagas sell” o “dunbury delusion”) pero lo que cambia completamente es el enfoque. Cómo Gabi quita la “burla” clásica en este tipo de efectos y cómo tras un aparente fallo “porque el espectador no ha creído” le pide que lo haga y una vez éste acepta la petición... se giran las tres cartas de la mesa para recordar la posición (no para demostrar que la elegida ya no está allí) y súbitamente... todo cambia. La mirada de los espectadores se modifica y de repente desean y creen que el juego va a funcionar, sin importar el cómo. Para mí éste es uno de los juegos que mejor definen la tan tantas veces malinterpretada magia ficcional, que no consiste en contar historias o interpretar un personaje (una cosa es la magia ficcional y otra la magia con ficción) sino, y sin que nuestro arte pierda su condición de imposibilidad, ofrecer al espectador una propuesta interesante, que lo enganche emocionalmente, con la imposibilidad como vehículo y no como fin en sí mismo, sin aludir explícitamente al truco/trampa aunque sin renunciar a la claridad, a la situación inicial bien definida y otros conceptos que refuercen el imposible pero no verbalmente y sin que éstos perviertan la experiencia del espectador. Este efecto se grabó en el Teatro Museo El Rei de la Magia en 2012, durante un festival donde Gabi realizó 24 horas de magia, todos con cartas y sin repetir un solo juego.
