Having met quite a few Malaysian Chinese, I'd say the difference is at least as big as between typical English and Americans!
Chinese in Malaysia did not assimilate so they are basically Chinese. As for Chinese in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand & Philiphines they have all assimilated.
@@shardtheicedragon No one can assimilate the Chinese, the status what the Chinese Malaysian are today is what they fought by their own hand. The peak population of Chinese Malaysian are once 48% of the total population, none other SEA country came close.
malaysian chinese have their roots mostly in southern china. they have their own cultures apart from the mainstream ones. they also blend with local flavours.
@@shardtheicedragon they definitely kept their traditions and language but I found Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese to have very different personalities and outlook to the typical mainlanders I meet.
@@shardtheicedragon I live in Saigon and the Chinese there still speak Cantonese and keep traditions and often write their name in Chinese too. They'll often marry Taiwanese or Hong kongers rather than vietnamese. They are treated unfairly by the Vietnamese government to this day, they can't apply for public service jobs for example.
Eileen, I really have to thank you. I finally reached the stage where I can listen to one of your podcasts and understand 80-90% of what is being said without looking at the subtitles. Not only this but by practicing with the video transcripts i also improved my pronunciation a lot and my Chinese friends give me many compliments ! Granted, your content is not the only resource I use to study Chinese, but it is definitely the one which opened the most important door in my Chinese learning journey.

How long did it take you??
@@yy-zk7lz i started learning chinese in 2017, but in a really casual way, like taking a one hour uni-offered class once a week and not much more. It's only in 2019 after my first 6-month stay in Asia that I decided to start taking my learning more seriously : I downloaded a Chinese dictionary app and a deck of vocabulary flashcards I would drill everyday. During that time I was also watching a lot of CZcams lessons about grammar etc. Then eventually in 2021 I found Eileen's channel and started really focusing on being able to understand natural speed Chinese, so I was reviewing a lot of her material (and some other Chinese podcasts too), and I would say that period was the one throughout which my Chinese improved at the fastest speed. Also note that I'm based in Hong Kong since 2021, and although I NEVER speak Mandarin with my HK friends, my work environment is full of mainland people, so that definitely helped a lot too.
The instrument you are talking about is a "pipe organ" ("orgue" in french and 管风琴 in chinese). It is effectively used in french churches.

Really great content. I have subscribed for years and recently went back to pull up my Chinese another level and was getting bored reviewing a lot of the higher level fantastic interviews you did on things like gay in china, why women don't want to get married etc. Really fantastic but I had reviewed many times. So this came up at the right time. I paid years ago in china for access to your materials but never really used them. So glad to see you doing so well. I now live in Myanmar and even became a CZcamsr also. Chinese is still useful here too.

@placidehabineza, I believe you meant the harpsichord. Only a harpsichord make the kind of music that is used in 'vampire movies.' In some ancient cathedrals, the harpsichords can occupy the space of a full wall and the sound they produce is majestic.

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone!
Access the playback speed controls as follows:
*Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
*Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).
Even easier, if you find yourself doing this on practically every CZcams video (sometimes speeding up, other times slowing down) -- if using Chrome, install the Enhancer for CZcams extension (1M+ users -- should be safe), then in the Extension Settings, click on Keybard Shortcuts, and add shortcut keys for "Decrease/Increase the playback speed".

Firstly, please do more of these long-form, in-depth (all-mandarin) interviews!! As an intermediate learner, I love, love them! However, can you please consider dimming the font color of the english subtitles -- i.e. make it darker so that it's not so prominent? The reason is because, as a multi-modal learner, I wish to listen and read (the written chinese) as I watch ... however, there will be words I don't know, so the english subtitles are valuable -- but because the latter is so prominent, it's easy to get 'lazy' and start (especially subconsciously) exclusively reading the english subtitles and not concentrate on the chinese subtitles directly above it, LOL! So dimming the text makes it harder to cheat! BTW, I love how you darken the subtitles region so that all three subtitles are more readable -- great job!

11:00 Yes, there's such a thing and that's why most of the people in the world deem chinese as not very polite or even rude people ( who speak very loud, behave themselves very importunate, don't respect other people in any way, etc.). Of course, they are not all like this. But this is how their culture forms for the world and how the world sees them. The same as this 13:53. People do it in the whole world to appreciate smth or show gratitude. I belive this is all afflicts how cultural you really are and not the "myths" you spread.
