MMA and boxing or kickboxing are very different disciplines.

Granted, he worked a bit more on the pads.. notice how much more exhausted Nieky is at the end though. He had to work VERY hard against GSP. I say this knowing full well how good Nieky is. at the point in time 5 years ago I dont think he would have been able to beat GSP in a kickboxing match. He wouldnt have done as much damage against the tank that is GSP and would have probably found himself exhausted in later rounds and in danger. Today Nieky is a different Nieky though..
