robOzwrld I am trying to do better videos! I am going to do fewer but put more time into the ones I do! I am happy that you liked the video it shows a bit more work pays off!
Mike Nichols Thanks Mike! I am going to have to get better at speaking into a microphone! I had all my ideas in my head but when I start talking it doesn't come out as smooth as I would like!
MASS Aquariums Thanks! I am trying to learn from many people on CZcams! I hope to keep getting better! I may have to write out my script in the future since some of my words got jumbled!
Great video, loved it. Especially the crab meat as a food source. If you want you could a feeding video, that'd be fun to watch. Thumbs up and thanks for sharing!
1deaver I am glad you enjoyed it! I did a video on them eating crab meat before and not many people watched it. I got some ideas from ***** on how to get more views, so I will do another video in the future using some of his ideas!
Fish For Brains Thanks! This brood looks different than a brood from a different pair! Going to see if moving them to another aquarium changes how they look!
@@RickyKenerlyCichlids hey can you just have two juveniles frontosa because sometimes one mess with the other some times i believe that the male more biger then the other one is small is also in the corner im getting something to hiding in
I am taking some things I learned from you in my videos! Having different steps placed in a video instead of just one recording take! I am sometimes not a fast learner but eventually some things finally absorb!
great info and video ricky the baby frontosa are awesome my Oscars liked the crab meat I tried after I seen you use it although Oscars eat anything lol
cadens fish and herps I have many different varieties of Peacock Cichlids, Saulosi, and some White Labidchromis Cichlids! I have about 20 plecos with about 5 varieties!
Ricky! I've been a big fan for years. I just had a Burundi female produce 22 fry. When can I add them back into the tank? Thank you for all the great videos. Artificial crab meat is on my to do list.
Have one 3 wk old front.shud i put in small tank or with others..we have changed our original tank over an found him....ive got heater n air..do i need filter thnku...an wats best to feed
Ow that is nice from you, I think Erik would like that! ;) I am also doing my tanks...waiting for youtube to let you see my new movie's and planting in the danio tank..was busy keeping up on my subscriber movie's..but I sub to many whahha..2 days of not doing youtube.... a inbox full of movie's to watch from you all..and I was also still busy doing some planting I messed up yesterday..doing some more..then change some..but now answering some comments and drink some coffee first..then get the hands wet again !! In the tanks..I mean.. ;)
Jef B Not sure if they would do that. They probably would need to be similar in personality and size. They have a Red Frontosa and I am sure that had crossed with a different fish at some time!
If they won't eat the smaller floating pellets I had good success feeding them algae wafers. Frozen mysis shrimp is good if you can get them to eat any manufactured food!
Regardless of what you hear in the community tank size, water quality, and type and amount of food can increase or slow growth to almost a stop. The bigger your aquariums are and more room for each fish will have dramatic affect on growth rate for your fish. As well as having little to no other aggressive fish with them. There just isn't a fixed answer for your question but you can affect positively and negatively the growth rate of your fish.
Hi Ricky Can I grow baby frontoza in 29 gallon aquarium till they will be around 3-4 inch than to move them to my 180 gallon ( where I have only big fish) Thank you very much
If it isn't too small you could! Sometimes the floating nurseries can get stagnant so you want to keep an eye on it very closely! And also make sure they are getting enough oxygen. If you do that they should be ok for short term use!
I am planning to setup a Frontosa tank. The seller will give me 10 fries in 2 weeks. Please give tips. Should I buy all ten fries from same person or I should split into multiple sellers to have the variety in genes. Also give me care tips. Thanks
I have lots of tips in my videos! If the parents of the fry look good then take all 10! Sometimes it can be hard to find other suppliers and it would be better if they were raised starting out at the same size!
When they are smaller they can have some plants in the aquarium but as the frontosas grow larger they will tear up the plants eventually. I am not a very good aqua scaper, but I would try to use some rocks from where you live if you have access to them. You can make your own caves and it is much cheaper. The large rocks I have in my aquariums come from the area where I live in and I am very happy with them. I wish I could get more without having to pay for them! Use rocks but not too many as the Frontosas need lots of room to swim in!
Hey Ricky, what species are these Frontsa? Cyphotilapia sp. North Burundi?? I recently got a small group of Fronts with no exact label on them. Mine look like these little guys in the video! Thanks!
I believe you are correct! Some people say they look like a couple other types but in the end they are all frontosas! When people ask me I tell them Burundi! Thanks for watching and asking a question!
Thanks for the reply! I agree with that mentality, I know many people pride themselves on strain so I like to be able to learn them and know what I keep at least. I got three of them and they are very small. Maybe an 1-1.5 inches. Whats the smallest tank you have kept a small group in? They are in a 55 Gallon now all alone and I'm keeping it that way. I plan on either only keeping a male and female in the future once I figure that out, or upgrading to a bigger tank. What are your thoughts?
I use a 4 55 gallon aquariums for Frontosas now. They are slow growers which allows lots of time to decide what to do. I have bigger aquariums with Frontosas in them as well. If you decide to keep them in the 55 gallon I would suggest having some caves for the Frontosas. Some people become Frontosa fanatics and some people get bored of them. If you decide to expand the amount of aquariums try to go for the biggest you can. I regretted that in the recent past! You can look at some of my other videos and see how I have my fronts. I haven't been big on the scape but I am trying to do better on that ongoing!
Yea I've watched a lot of your videos. Great filtration and nice beneficial growth on rocks and caves. I personally like an open scape with big fish. I am planning on doing the cut in half pot in the future when they are bigger for sure! How many do you usually keep in just a 55 if you're keeping them in there for life? Just a pair?
What ph does your tap water run at? You can use cichlid sand for more options but it is more expensive. I am satisfied with pool filter sand as it works great and is cheaper per pound. Sometimes the sand option is important as it can require much work if you do not like the color or look of what you put in. Sometimes the extra money may be worth it to you to have a certain kind of sand. If your ph is 7.7 or higher It should be ok. I don't recommend buffers as the swings can affect your fish too much and I do not believe it is worth the extra cost.
Ricky why do u strip the females..why can't they mouthbrood.. And I thought frontosa are carnivores..won't algae wafers slow down their growth..just asked out of curiosity
dogglet1234 Many baby fish eat algae when they are small. I feed my baby peacock cichlids algae wafers as well. They also have good protein content! I strip my fish because sometimes they eat them and you don't get to raise as many fish. This allows for the most fish to survive to be raised!
I have three videos on them. The last two I just used my finger and if you watch it only took about 20 seconds or less! I was nervous about it at first, but the females don't mind too bad because they fast when holding. I try to feed them a few minutes after stripping them and they gobble up the food!
I was at first! Watch a lot of videos on stripping fish beforehand! You might know someone who does it and you can watch them. I watched many videos before I did it.
Nice video, very informative, well done Ricky!

Great info. Would a colony thrive if other fish are in the tank?
Not as good as if there is just one species! But they still can do great depending on the number and mix!
Ricky Kenerly Cichlids quick question, would you put 5 adolescent Frontosa with a large school of tiger barbs?
Ricky! I've been a big fan for years. I just had a Burundi female produce 22 fry. When can I add them back into the tank? Thank you for all the great videos. Artificial crab meat is on my to do list.
It depends on what you have in the tank. It could be several months so they won’t be eaten!
DYI. guy said the same he also use pool sand for his new aquarium
Loved your video

I feel old today! My neck is sore from painting and gripping my computer mouse!
what do you think about mixing frontosa with other african cichlids? It seems to me that they prefer to be amongst their own kind but I have no idea.
Jef B Not sure if they would do that. They probably would need to be similar in personality and size. They have a Red Frontosa and I am sure that had crossed with a different fish at some time!
AquaZone Montreal Izabella has two red frontosas I believe.
They do fine when mixed
What kinda pleco can you put with the frontosa
Of 2 cm with which the food I have about 2 cm and it is difficult for me to eat commercial food ...... you the desparacitas of that size?
If they won't eat the smaller floating pellets I had good success feeding them algae wafers. Frozen mysis shrimp is good if you can get them to eat any manufactured food!
Which variant are these Frontosa?
Nice video, just one question : what time these guys will take to grow upto 5 in
Regardless of what you hear in the community tank size, water quality, and type and amount of food can increase or slow growth to almost a stop. If it isn't too small you could! Sometimes the floating nurseries can get stagnant so you want to keep an eye on it very closely! And also make sure they are getting enough oxygen. If you do that they should be ok for short term use!

My goodness they are cute 👍
Calvin Cichlids The last ones in the video are the ones I moved to my 55 gallon!
Ah I see, they grow pretty fast huh
Faster than expected but still slow. I think they will grow faster in the bigger grow out aquarium now!
Maybe bump an extra waterchange weekly would do them well?
It might but they kinda react more strongly than other fish when doing a water change when they are small. Atleast mine do.
How many times a week should you feed them the crab?
Twice will be good!
Ricky Kenerly Cichlids same thing with shrimp ?
Use your own judgment but I think it would be ok!
Do u sell
Occasionally to a fish store only.
I want some of them baby males and females please free please
