Amazing Fish Keeps Pumping Out Expensive Babies! Frontosa African Cichlid Aquarium

  • This amazing fish keeps pumping out expensive Frontosa babies! If you saw the last video on these fish then you saw my Frontosa African cichlid had about 12 babies after being in an aquarium for 2 years all alone. Hermaphrodite fish? You be the judge. Now she has pumped out about 30 more baby fish (fry). At this point they're all in an 80 gallon aquarium. Now I need to figure out how to build a bigger tank! Not sure how big but 1000 gallons sounds like a sweet fish tank to me.

    I don’t know if it’s the same but in reptiles and most animals there is a process called parthenogenesis in which a female can produce viable eggs, because there is no male present they will all be genetic clones of the mother. It might be worth looking into, I’ve heard that some fish do this willingly and as frontosas are communal fish it might be possible she did this to keep her genetic lineage going until hopefully one of her offspring found a male

    One additional thought: You have all of that "fish water" and are probably having to change out the water in the tank quite often. Don't throw it away ! It makes fantastic fertilizer for plants in your garden. (Its kinda like your other "natural" fertilizer you have mentioned in the past.)

    Hi Mike Kincaid. The fish are beautiful. I kept fish for about ten years. Yours are gorgeous. If you keep the light off more often it will cut back on the algae. Cichlids are aggressive so I do recommend another tank. If you turn the temperature down, it might help them not breed as often. My Angel's went a little crazy with breeding when I turned the temperature up. Needless to say I turned it back down. They get a little aggressive with each other and other fish in the tank. Good luck. Fish can be very peaceful to watch. Have a great day.

    Mike I have had fish for 60 years. I have heard of such a thing,...but ,Your female fish cloning offspring is just one of the most amazing things. Why did you have only one Frontosa? The second batch maybe created exactly like the female did the first group. I suspect all of the offspring are female ...but I do not know of course.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 4 lety

      It's truly amazing. Not sure of the sex but there are a few in there that look like they could be males. We originally bought the frontosa as a juvenile along with a few other different African cichlids (all were juvenile). It was a new tank set up and within a short time, all the other cichlids died off except for the one frontosa. We just kept her in there by herself and let her grow up and about 2 years later she started popping out babies.

    Hiya Mike, the frontosas lay their eggs in a cavity in the substrate and guards the eggs until they hatch, then the female will take the fry into its mouth for a few weeks until they get large enough to be free swimming at which time they release them while the parents guard them from other tankmates so they don't get eaten. It is rather amazing that she had a brood without a Male present. There are some fish that store the sperm of the Male like guppies or other livebearers, until they are in an ideal environment to hatch a brood. Maybe this is what happened with your frontosa.
    Whatever you are doing keep it up, the fry look very healthy and you should be able to get a decent price for them when they get a little older, either from an aquarium store or online.
    I'd love to get some from you but I'm up here in Canada and I'm sure it's a little complicated to ship to Canada. Love your videos, ps how is the pinkie?

    • @dartist64
      @dartist64 Před 5 lety

      You could wait until they get a little bigger before moving them out to the stock tank or if they start displaying any aggression towards each other, but they tend to be quite peaceful tankmates. 700 gal is a decent size tank to grow out these amazing fish. The setup you have in the tank is exactly the environment that the frontosas like, rocky outcrops with caves and nice sandy substrate. Whatever temperature you have it at seems to be ideal too. Good luck with this, I have a whole lot of Krebenses, small chiclids, that continue to bread so i transferred a whole bunch of them into a 120gal tub. It's really fascinating to watch the parents look after their brood when they are so tiny that you might not see them.
      I am keeping you and your pinkie in my thoughts and prayers that it will heal well. Cheers and keep the optimism alive.

  • @JamesKing2understandinglife

    Excellent colony of frontosa. Keep them all and do water changes as needed or more often. Big tanks are heavy. Or sell all of the youngsters and just keep mom in there reproducing on her own.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 5 lety

      I'd love to keep them all. I've considered several options but not sure how I'm going to pull them off yet. I could put them all in a 700 gallon stock tank with some aquarium heaters, in my pole barn/shop. I'm also considering keeping them in the 80 gallon tank like you mentioned but having it plumbed into a 250 gallon sump to increase the water volume. I think idea number 2 would be cool because I could overstock the tank but still have plenty of water volume for the health of the tank.

Once the char’s loaded up, you could either sell the activated biochar or use it on your own garden/cuttings for lush produce. Cheers!

I do need to figure something out in the meanwhile because I'm not sure how long they will all fit in this tank. Also trying to figure out if there is a fish trap I can place in the tank to catch the fry so I don't have to disturb all the rock while catching them. My thoughts at this point are to set up a 700 gallon stock tank in my pole barn and running a couple aquarium heaters in it.

    You're into propogation numbers, so here is a formula for you. 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. If tthe fish is 2 inches wide and 3 inches long you mutiply and need 6 gallons of water for that one fish. You are past your capicity now. Also fish will sometimes grow to their surroundings. More tank, bigger fish. Also it could be a juvenile female and the momma being impregnated by 16 juvenile males. Food for thought.

    holy moly mike. there must be something in the water. haha. all the fish look so healthy and the color is so good. it's inconceivable or very conceivable. the only thing that im think can happen is that the mother is capable of morphing it's sex from female to male and male to female having both sexes at one time and impregnating its self. i tried several times to get joey mullen to answer the question but he's so busy for personnel requests. i say it is possible. what is impossible or possible. oh my head...have a good one, carmine.
