    One of the reasons why I love Steven Universe so much, is the fact that the adults are not idiots. In so many cartoons, the parents and adults are either overly strict and controlling, just plain idiots, and stuff like that, and it really bothers me. I love SU because they aren't portrayed like that (or at least not nearly as drastically). All of the characters have such depth and development to them and are all super supportive of each other. I find it sad that there are so few shows out there that have these wonderful qualities, and it's why I find SU to be (no pun intended) a real gem of a show.

    • @troy6646
      @troy6646 Před 9 lety +13

      Pun clearly intended lol, but i agree with u. Steven may be a show on cartoon network, but it's not really a 'kids' show. I believe this can be watched with a family and almost everyone will enjoy it. When i hear kids show i think of stuff like Disney shows(mostly Disney jr), or nick jr and stuff. Steven isn't that one character who just happens to have something happen to him with some(no pun intended) magical solution, like Johnny test. Steven actually develops as a character, with the new episodes he changes a little. Even the side characters get some development. Nobody in the show is "that random guy/girl". Even the mail man gets his own episode.

      +IrishPixie2342 Funny how Nightmare Hospital played into that. Connie's overly strict parents (mother in particular, in that episode) wound up being completely reasonable after having the situation explained clearly. Go figure, right?

    • @Edible_Kittens
      @Edible_Kittens Před 9 lety +6

      Also, Connie's mom could have fallen into the very strict parent who seems to not want to understand or listen to her daughter, which is true to an extent, but is dealt with a kind and gentle hand that the show always does with it's characters as we see that Connie's mom truly does want the best for her daughter, and wants to protect her but she does make mistakes in that Connie doesn't feel comfortable enough to tell her mom about her secrets with Steven. The show doesn't so much as harshly chastise her for it and completely side with Connie and Steven but instead just give her a chance to see why she's wrong.

    I hate how people blow it off because it's a "kids show" (it's a family show please *rolls eyes*)
    My best friend (who is years younger than me and only 15 which is still a kid, God) won't even consider it because "it's a cartoon", "I don't like cartoons" and "I only like animated *movies*"
    It upsets me because this show is so great and teaches so much. Its moving, progressive, and just overall amazing.
    I've watched this show since it first aired and has been my favorite. It has helped me overcome so much and means so much to me, I cant stand wen people blow it off saying it just a cartoon or its just for kids, when in reality its for anyone and everyone.

    • @korvincarry3268
      @korvincarry3268 Před 8 lety +6

      I couldn't care less about its progressiveness. it's the one cartoon I've found in my lifetime that made me feel, something. something strong enough to break my normal habits, something to break my soul and mind. I don't know what I felt, but it had been so long since I had felt anything but anger, sadness, and occasional exhilaration when I finally did something right, that it was like a magnet. I guess because I could empathize with every character in the show in some way or another, but maybe it's just me.

      +Kevin Crepas Yes Steven Universe lifted my mood ever since I started watching it. I the show has so much love in it. It spreads it everywhere. I especially like Steven and his Dad's relationship. Greg might be my favorite character actually.

    • @korvincarry3268
      @korvincarry3268 Před 8 lety +3

      firetypehunter27 I used to be the most pessimistic person, but I've honestly felt happier and more optimistic after I found this show. I found it after I went on a nostalgia binge, rewatching "fosters home for imaginary friends" and "ed edd and eddie." CZcams suggested it to me, and I've never been so glad that youtube suggested something to me. I guess I have a bit of a messed up life, but like I said before, I empathized with the characters, I knew what they felt and felt it myself. I feel like, as the characters grow, I grow with them, which is a beautiful thing to find in a cartoon. Pearl is my favorite character because I see more of myself in her, but greg is definitely my top 5.

    My friend became obsessed with Steven Universe over the summer. I kept telling myself, "It's just like all of the other weird shows on Cartoon Network." For some strange reason, I decided to watch the first episode. I then watched another...and another. Then I kinda became obsessed.
    I still have yet to get my one friend obsessed. She watched a minute of the episode "On the Run" and was kinda scared. She says that the characters' voices are annoying. And somehow she got bored while watching the episode "Cry for Help." I refer to her as Hater. :3

      Harry Hansen i probably should mention that i use the lapis "story arc" as an entry point for new viewers. i don't like doing that, but people have the attention span of a gnat and would rather skip the world building segments entirely. usually they want to go back and watch more anyway, i just can't be bothered to rewatch the entire first season for the 4th time.

      @chrisrizzo2206 Před 9 lety +3

      chaosscizzors 25 episodes is a lot of investment before it gets "good." That's half of the first season people who even like the show discredit. I'm not opposed to checking it out. It's just that knowing I have to put in that kind of time puts it off.

      @chrisrizzo2206 Před 9 lety

      chaosscizzors Aside from people I know, the video and your own comment refer to the same episode as being the breaking point of interest for the show. There may well be pertinent information within previous episodes, I'm not going to argue that or ignore them when I check out the show, but that is where the creator of the video began to like it, and where you say it bothers you that people stop before because that's the good part. It's like people describing a movie as slow in the beginning, but when it picks up you're going to like it. Saying that's it's slow doesn't mean you hate it or that it doesn't contain important facts relevant to the movie, just that it's meh. In the case of the show, that what 10ish hours of meh watching?

    A lot of my friends say that they don't watch the show because it's pretty stupid and too childish, they often compare it with things like uncle grandpa and say it's a worse version of sailor moon, but I completely disagree with them. Go ahead and say that my opinion is wrong, but I wont care, I love the show. It's not built upon the idea that females are better than males, but rather that females can be strong too. Unlike sailor moon and other shows of the same variety, Steven Universe portrays characters with fleshed out personalities and different body types, rather than making every female character super skinny with bubbly happy-go-lucky attitudes. My cousin say's that there isn't enough action, and yes, I agree that a little more fight scenes with longer durations would be great, but I also think that more action would turn the show into another adventure time, but it's not adventure time. Steven Universe balances emotional scenes, action, and comedy in a perfect way. If you read all of this than.. wow... good job. You don't have to bash me for liking SU if you don't like, because it's my opinion. OPINION, what I think, not what other people think or should think.

    • @korvincarry3268
      @korvincarry3268 Před 8 lety +1

      I've never watched sailor moon and all those other shows, but I've gotten my foot wet with AT. didn't like it much. SU is such a unique cartoon because of what you said and a bit more, mainly on the sexuality issue. if people got to know the lore of gems, then apply that to the relationships, they'd see that the gems really aren't homosexual or anything. they are attracted to personalities, plus all the relationships are so much more complex than people make them, so there are a number of reasons why character x loves character y. ultimately, the show let's you choose what viewpoint you like more and roll with that one if you wanted to, something you rarely find even in books. yes, I said books, the greatest form of storytelling in its longest, most detailed form. great opinions, I just wanted to second them and expound on them from my view.

    This video didn't do much to persuade me... just enough. I had no idea why I would watch a preachy SJW kids' cartoon with anime influences and a very slow start, and mostly female main characters (I am male and thought the show might be meant more for girls). After watching this, I thought the same thing... but I tried it anyway. It is now one of my favourite shows of all time and has profoundly changed me as a person, teaching me how to love, empathize (I previously literally didn't understand the concept), and generally how to be human. Unfortunately, I now experience dangerous withdrawal whenever the series is on hiatus.

    I feel like another reason that a lot of people dismiss this show is that they feel as if it is just... "tumblr the show"... In other words they think that the only substance of the show is that some of the characters could be interpreted as homosexual. Unfortunately the fanbase tends to exaggerate those parts making it seem like it is just about that when there is WAY more to the show. And while the show does have some promotions of different sexualities and body types, it is very subtle about it and focuses more on the character development and the concept of love and family. It also has some of the best background scenes and music that I've seen in cartoons.

    To the people in the comment section (and beyond) who have a problem with this review's mention of the progressive aspects of the show:
    A lot has been written on just how progressive the show is. It's woven into the fabric of the show, and has largely been confirmed by show staff. It's there, and can't really be brushed aside.
    This review does not spend its entirety talking about this. It does not spend a long time delving into it, in the interest of spoiler-free.
    If you really want to deny the progressive aspects of the show; if the thought of LGBTQ characters and varied body representations really bothers you so much, ask yourself why. Why do gay interpretations of these characters bother you? Even if they're wrong, so what if strangers interpret these characters that way? Is it really a loss on you if someone else, who tends to lack representation in media, finds someone they can relate to on this show on a different level? Is "progressive", and mentioning it, really that bad to you that you have to comment negatively on it?

    • @fnordiumendures138
      @fnordiumendures138 Před 9 lety +1

      Quigster23 "Progressive" have come to mean us vs. them, censorship and anti-science to a lot of people. Not the kind of sourness you want in your escapist fiction.
      That said, I haven't actually seen Stephen Universe, so I don't know if its progressive themes are well handled or comes off as bunch of obnoxious preaching.

    • @DanDrambles
      @DanDrambles  Před 9 lety +3

      Mads Jakobsen It's handled really well. Nothing in this is ever preachy at all. It simply presents things. It doesn't ask you to accept them.

    I've been trying to figure out what makes this show so good for about half a year now, and I only formed a satisfying answer in the last few weeks. It's the same answer you've arrived at here - the show isn't about action, or comedy, but about love and relationships.
    The events of the early episodes are forgettable (until there's a callback episode bringing up or referencing a seemingly irrelevant detail), but the importance is on what they tell about the characters.
    Thank you for doing this episode, and this series. Something like this is indeed sorely needed!

    • @danbark4603
      @danbark4603 Před 7 lety

      im sure even you are aware of why those episodes exist, its obviously to break the tension from previous gem related things, as well as give insight to Stevens world from the human side instead of the gem side, its also fun to notice that in a lot of those episodes they add many references to precious shows theyve seen and even some criticism towards different topics, or even sometimes reveals abilities that Steven wasnt aware of (kikis delivery service and the new lars for example)
      i do think they could be better episodes, but in a way they help the gem episodes look better in comparison, i do wish they would reduce the ammount of episodes related to the townspeople or at least give us those episodes and gem related ones in something like a dual-release, because the more interesting the gem episodes look the less and less we tend to care about the townspeople ones, which is probably why most dislike them more and more as the show goes on, there arent many answers to the questions the show keeps bringing in those episodes and thats why they feel like fillers

    A good video, with one gripe, if you will. By identifying only the "gay", "transgender", and "non-traditional family" relationships by name you give them undue emphasis to the exclusion of the many other complex relationships portrayed in the slow. It may give people the idea that this is a "message show" or something that only SJWs or Tumblrites would enjoy. But the truth is that I adore it and I couldn't give less care to its progressiveness.
    It *does* portray complex and non-traditional relationships. But that shouldn't be the main reason why you watch it unless you're just looking for something to analyze in contrast to everything else. Watch it because of the character development, the subtle plot progression, and the humour. Oh, and the massive hits-you-out-of-nowhere feels.

    • @DarkestOfKoi
      @DarkestOfKoi Před 9 lety +7

      Glamador Although he did say them by name, I find it an important piece of information. The show does not make it out to be anything special, and thats why it is important to tell viewers about it. The show is very nontraditional in its story telling, it doesn't make these special relationships seem anything other than normal.

    • @Glamador
      @Glamador Před 9 lety

    Steven universe is a whole story, not just a different one every episode. One great example of how people progress is lard and Sadie (sorry if I spelt that wrong.) From learning of lars’ social anxiety to Sadie’s relationship with him, and her relationship with her mother. At one point I even noticed Sadie kept a scar from a previous episode, and she reacts to things differently to how she did before. This is a great representation of how loving and kind Steven is, as he cares deeply for them and their relationship when they are just people( I am aware of lars in the stars) but Steven sees them just as important as the gems. How now the gems are struggling for perfection now that rose is gone, yet Steven teaches them that they don’t need perfection, they are the crystal gems and they always save the day. This tv show is not for children, but everybody, like Steven it sees them as all equal, as it has drama comedy action and something I usually wouldn’t like, romance.

So one day I told her that she should check it out, but she responds with the usual answer of: "But that show is for KIDS" and "I don't like the way the characters are drawn". So I got triggered. In my opinion its so much MORE than just a kids cartoon, it has its own mystery and beauty, it tends to get pretty deep sometimes; it leaves you wanting to see what happens next. It keeps getting better every episode. And for the character thing, thats why there's character development, there is so much more improvement. Honestly my classmate has no idea what she is missing :)

    no crude humour so already significantly more mature than a majority of shows, accessible online, the look is negligible, but the mix between east and west animation styles works. Most cartoons are more suited for adults, often riddled with word jokes or Visual Easter eggs that kids won't get.Those how can't get hooked or like it, it's their choice and should be respected.

    I love the show but unfortunately a lot of people are disgusted by the fanbase (who could blame them) and refuse to watch it. It's actually a great show with an absolutely horrid fanbase

    the only thing wrong with Steven universe(and everything else popular) is the fandom

      It's more on the Tumblr side of the Steven Universe fandom where it's real bad. There are a few good seeds for every couple of bad seeds there, though, but you must be dedicated to finding someone on Tumblr who's not a loony. Reddit is the calmer side of the fandom (no joke), and you won't find too many bad seeds hanging around there. Just nice, calm folks.

      not true at all tbh. when i went on it regularly i very rarely found "loonies". and the only reason i don't go on it regularly anymore is because i'm switching blogs and being lazy about working on my new one lmao

      Jaey Lopidas I'm sort of in the fandom...ok maybe a lot BUT I'm in the better side and not weird ass shipping side

    • @sertaki

      One of the writers was basically bullied out of twitter after shipping the "wrong" characters ... so yeah, parts of the fandom are very toxic (as is the case in every fandom).
      From what I have seen of Tumblr fandom, it really isn't bad. The crowd there tends to touch more upon the LGBT themes that pop up all the time.
      Ignoring the shippers is a good way to retain sanity, they are quite the rabid bunch, especially if you dare to disagree with their "perfect" ideas, as seen above ;).

    sounds like the start is very slow and very light hearted which puts me off despite myself being curious about it

      I used to think it was all light-hearted too. But after the newest promo, I've been going back and evaluating all the points where the show has changed (Ocean gem, Jailbreak, etc.) and I'm seeing a lot more of the serious and dark undertones that I missed early on.

    I think the reason that I like Steven Universe a little bit more than Mlp:FiM is because I like Steven Universe more for the show than the fandom. I found the show and loved it for what it was before there was even a fandom. I know all of you remembered (or most of you) those commercials that were advertising Steven Universe. That's when it clicked for me. At the very beginning. It was mostly for the song, cuz it was sooo awesome, but the show itself looked rather interesting. All of the imagery, just everything was put together perfectly. The song caught you, the pictures amazed you, and it teased you, making you almost drool. Actually, I think I did drool when the first episode aired. I was SO bored and So ready for something new. And the advertising matched the show, well no, I take it back, that ad was one of the best I've ever seen for a TV show, but it wasn't even half of what the show is. The characters, the plot, everything. I knew something good was in store. I was correct. I literally could not stop, and I was thinking about it a lot, not enough to be obsessed, but just enough to make it my favorite. I remember while I was on a plane, I fell asleep to the instrumental version of the outro of the show. With My Little Pony, I like it mostly for the fandom. Every episode is different and kinda doesn't have much of a narrative. It's kinda there, but is very subtle. The special episodes are very good, but many are just there. The fandom is the big part of it. I just really love all of the art and creativity. But sometimes watching re runs, get boring. With Steven Universe, I already love the art in the show itself. The only time it gets dull is when there is a new show, then a rerun right after it. But with Mlp, there could be 3 episodes, that are reruns in a row, and I could just not be into it. Now, I do like the show, and sometimes I am really into it, and right after the last episode, I'll curse Littlest pet shop. Those who watch it on TV on Discovery Family will know what I mean. I'm not dissing Mlp, I even used to binge watch when my brother still had Netflix on his ps3, but was at college, after I was determined to know the whole story, in order. It was amazing, those days. I would watch it from the time I got home, to the time where it was pitch black dark, other than the light from the TV. So, yes, I love the show too, it just seems to have lost its spark because I couldn't watch it on Netflix, and only certain episodes came on TV, not necessarily the next episode. Oh, and the show was on hiatus, so yeah. It just seems that Steven Universe is the one show that I have been able to watch, keep up with, and love even when I haven't watched it in a while. I've finally caught myself up online, since my mother took my TV, and I'm feeling pretty awesome right now.

    I LOVE Steven Universe. Great video, too! Well done!
    I'd like to see this with Battlebots (yeah, the ABC robot fighting show) or maybe with Humans. Neither of these shows are getting the love they deserve to get. Hell, maybe even True Detective.

    I think it's interesting that people don't want to get into this show because it's on cartoon network. I'm here thinking why? Cartoon network had some of the best shows on tv not to long ago, it was only when it started with that live action non-sense that it really took a nose dive. Though if you take a look now they are kind of going back to what made them great with shows like adventure time, Steven universe, we bare bears, regular show, and some more shows I can't think of right now. And as a side thing I like Steven universe from when I first started watching it especially after giant women.
