- In this video, I show you the highlights of how I constructed my N-Scale Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision layout, starting in 2014. Before talking about construction, though, I briefly show you what the layout looks like today. The track plan for my layout is loosely based on the Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision, which stretches some 175 miles from Green River, Wyoming, west to Ogden, Utah.

Roy, This was very informative. If I was young enough to rebuild my layout, I believe that I would switch from flex track to the Kato Unitrack. Thanks for sharing your journey.....John

I know that not everyone likes Kato Unitrack, but for me, having built a layout using flex track back in the 1980's, I can only say that I would never go back to flex track after using Kato track on my current layout. I'm just too darn old for all that bending, cutting, and soldering. ...Roy

Just got a comment from you, much appreciated, it was about Shady Maple, as I am from Allentown, PA area and will always call the Lehigh Valley RR my favorite however I model UPRR alone I-10 in the far west as a fictitious merger of the two railroads S I not only was a brakeman but an over the road trucker and fell in love with the desert and scenic possibilities. Keep those videos coming.

I hear you, Kent. I grew up in central PA, and whenever I travel back there, I get a special feeling that I get no where else in the world. In the 1980's, I built a layout based on Conrail set in central PA. Now, I model the UP in a western setting because the desert and semi-arid areas of the American West and Southwest fascinate me. ...Roy

You've come a long way Roy and overcome some difficulties on the journey. Improvement keeps the interest going, but it's not about perfection. Just that eighteen inch extension at Evanston gave you that Echo Canyon stretch that we all enjoy railfanning.

i loved it roy. there are some things that you are very well known for that you did not touch base with in your video though and that i would like to bring up in the comments so that other people can go to your play list and watch you do these things. first off roy is one of the best people i have ever seen besides one who is equial to him mike fifer and that is how to paint weather and balast kato unitrack. these two guys are the best i have ever seen do this. it is a must watch section on his list. also roy is the best at forced perspctive i have ever seen. on his back drops and especialy on his round house videos. you wont believe how it works so well. please watch the listed videos for these from roy. sorry roy had to get that out there. this video was totaly awesome bud. wish i would have done videos like you did on mine but i didnt soooo...... oh well i guess but i loved yours. so for everyone out there watching look up all his videos you will love them too.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Roy I think I'm the slowest model railroader builder in the world..got my train shed end of 2020 and just have wiring and almost insulation done for now..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance

If you’ve seen Wyoming then your layout is pretty accurate representation of it. Been watching your videos for years and hope your doing great! I model the Gulf Coast Lines (merged into mopac in 1935) and it consists of two GCL branch lines, the Brownsville sub Bloomington yard, and a interchange with southern pacific to serve my third and final branch line. Due to space constriction to connect all three levels I have to use a modular helix, there’s 4 drop in n play modular connector pieces, and two hinged extensions as well as two staging cassettes that double end my 30 foot representation of the Brownsville sub going through Bloomington yard and finishing past placedo interchange and into staging.

Nope, no soldering, Piero. One of the reasons why I use Kato Unitrack is that soldering isn't necessary. ...Roy

Really nice video Roy. So nice to look back over your achievements. The reason I am slow doing a total renovation of my layout is mainly health. I am now so shaky I cannot even get wires soldered in a D Type connector, and I can't stand for more than 15 minutes at a time. I hate getting old!

Very informative layout on how you built your layout Roy. I finally got my trains running on my layout. My layout is double track. The first expansion part is where I will place the planned South end of my staging yard, the diesel locomotive shop, diesel fuel storage tanks will also go there. I still have a lot of work to do on it. I’m just taking my time to work on it.

Fascinating Roy - the footprint of the layout is about the same as mine. Looks much bigger in appearance on your videos. I've just installed two helices to provide more storage yards underneath the main layout. Cheers Euan

Hell Roy I don't think your the slowest building ever until you met me. I started mine in 2015 and barely done three quarters of it. Of course I still work but I'm a seasonal worker and during the winter months the layout has my full attention. The layout room is 12 1/2 feet by 24 for ho and its all freelance.

This is one of the best layouts I've ever seen. I have been a model railroader since I was 4 years old and got introduced to N Scale in 2018. You say your layout is small, but the layout that my dad and I are working on for my little room is 6' by 56"! I cant wait to get a big house and build one of these layouts.

Hi Roy, I agree, it's a life time hobby not a job. I have a question, when you say you were out of the hobby for 30 years, did you still purchase model railroad magazines? The reason I ask, some of my previous jobs kept me from building a layout because I was always traveling. So I spent a number of years as an armchair modeler and only able to keep current with the hobby through the purchase of the railroad magazines. But in reality, I feel I've been a model railroader for 52 years now. Always great to see your layout update video Roy, thanks for sharing this little walk down memory lane. Cheers, Rich S.

I’m about to start a second module to add onto my first by using the 2 spurs that I left in place for a future build (that my amazing wife doesn’t know about, she thought I used them to park trains in, LOL)
I wanna us Kato double tracks on this project but as my original is all single track I’m thinking I’ll need to use a wye to make this happen and hope Kato sells them but we’ll soon see 😂

Great job at documenting your layout. The Kato track sure speeds things up. In retrospect, would you have made more clearance for your staging deck?

@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 You can say that again. I am working on bridging an 18" elevation change with five loops of 76" diameter. Even wiring can be a pain in the posterior. By the way, have you ever had the chance to visit the Kato showroom in Tokyo? They have a number of great layouts on display.

You're slow? I bought a model railroading how to book in 1996. Still no layout. Although I did begin benchwork 2 years ago, but had to be dismantled because I ended up moving to an even smaller location, so everything is on hold for the foreseeable future.
