      Idk how this isn’t mentioned more, like of course we get more Zoro fights and thus we get more evidence he is closer to Luffy, because he is a fighter, he fights. Sanji is primarily a Cook and Strategist and a fighter secondary alongside those. As you said, he’s under the radar, does nobody remember mr prince? While Luffy and Zoro got big battles or fights he was behind the scenes doing shit. Like how is this not talked about more when considering the evidence behind whos stronger, like we will always have slightly more to Zoro because that’s the point to Zoro being Zoro.

      @@somenerdpng another perfect example is ennies lobby. While Luffy is still fighting Lucci and Zoro and the rest are dealing with marine captains, Sanji is off preparing for their escape by closing the gates. In Wano now I like to say that Zoro is a Samurai while Sanji is a ninja. Zoro is a swordsman, but also blunt, straightforward, honorable, and in no way attempts to hide or give himself an advantage. Sanji is still obviously pretty honorable himself, but for him it's more about doing what needs to be done even if he doesn't look the best. When King attacked him, he probably didn't really care about "looking bad" or "losing face" he'd done his job of saving momonosuke. Sanji is stealth, observant, quick and silent, and keeps a cool head (unless women are involved and then he invokes his inner pervy sage and throws logic out the damn window)

      Dunno how many more arcs it’ll take for people to get this. Sanji is often doing stuff on the low that essentially saves the whole crew. I’m more of a Zoro guy myself but like everyone, Sanji’s got his role and it goes deeper than people remember. He’s not just the cook or the third best guy.

    • @UndeadGary
      @UndeadGary Před 3 lety +64

      @@zachyjoe1 That's the prevalent theory but it isn't necessarily implied in the dream itself. Sanji as a kid was not thinking he'd have to be strong or do those things to obtain that dream. He just wanted to find all blue due to his chef expertise rather than his fighting expertise as it was a cook's paradise. Sanji then and most likely still now thinks all blue is a place he can find somewhere out there on the sea that already exists. The redline theory after all could be wrong, even though it's very enticing.
      He's learned that to make it on the sea he will have to grow in strength but I'd argue thats more for the sake of Sanji wanting to support Luffy's dream in the hopes that Luffy's dream will lead to his. The fact that he was already strong was more due to his upbringing and his chivalric ideals rather than his dream.
      My point is that there's nothing in Sanji's dream that requires him to be strong. Now it may take the actions of the strong and the destruction of the redline to actually come to fruition but no chef in the one piece world is dreaming of all blue and actively training to oppose the world government for the sake of that dream. Whereas anyone wanting to be the world's strongest swordsman is definitely training anyway they can to become as strong as they can.

    Thank you for going over this from the angle of - this is a story and the author makes deliberate decisions to portray characters in certain ways. Instead of looking at feats in a scientific way as if these were events that actually occurred. Your argument is much better than the 5000m of water pressure type arguments.

    • @DIVAD291
      @DIVAD291 Před 3 lety +1

      Why is that argument better? A good story conveys what it wants to convey trough creating a believable world(as in internally consistent, not necessarily consistent with our reality) and it achieves that with simple logical chains. To ignore that and strictly rely on meta elements(i.e the author basically telling us what he wants us to believe) to decide what is "true" of the story makes the whole process of actually writing the story pretty pointless since he could literally just tell us what the dynamic is and that would accomplish the same thing.
      From the writer's perspective it's perfectly fine to start with what you want to convey and build the reality of your world around that. But a reader should not start with what the author wants to convey and try to interpret the reality of the world based on that. The reality is your basis and if it doesn't match with what the author wants to be true, that's on the author.

      @SilverRyuu Před 3 lety +1

      @@DIVAD291 The problem with feats is that we're dealing with fictional worlds with fictional physics. How a character is portrayed is significantly more important than their feats. Shanks for example has very little feats for example but we know that he is strong. Ace also have very few feats but we know he must have been strong. Authors aren't always doing physics calculations to accurately determine exactly how strong a character is. Luffy dodged a pacifista beam, that doesn't mean he is faster than light. Rayleigh can keep up with Kizaru, that doesn't mean that Rayleigh moves at the speed of light. That's not to say judging a character's strength based on feats is wrong, but how a character is portrayed in the context of the series is equally as important.

    • @DIVAD291
      @DIVAD291 Před 3 lety

      @@SilverRyuu "The problem with feats is that we're dealing with fictional worlds with fictional physics."
      I never said we should apply real world physics to evaluate things in the fictional world but the author typically establishes what the physics and logic of his world are(that would be the most important part of world building). So I don't really see that as a problem.
      " How a character is portrayed is significantly more important than their feats."
      I disagree...a mismatch between a character's actual power in the story and how they are portrayed can be incredibly jarring. It's not uncommon for a character to have an ability that would be insanely op in the world the author created but the author fails to recognize it so they portray the character as weak or an ability/action could have an obvious flaw but the author doesn't realise it so he portrays the character as "flawless". When those things happen it can be extremely tiring because it creates cognitive dissonance and it makes it very difficult to maintain your suspension of disbelief and that makes the story less enjoyable.
      Take the last jedi as an example. The holdo character completely fails as a leader but the movie tries to portray her as a good leader despite basically every decision she makes being incredibly stupid and that made it very hard to sit trough. I understand not everyone reacts the same but most people at least subconsciously understand that what they are told is different from what they are seeing and that's going to make their experience slightly worse even if they don't quite understand what the issue was.
      If the reality of your story doesn't match with what you want to say, you can't just say it anyway. You have to make the reality convey what you are trying to say.
      "Shanks for example has very little feats for example but we know that he is strong."
      When we have little information to go on it makes sense to make your prediction on how strong a character will be on how strong the author tells you that character is. That doesn't really mean anything because it's just normal that the less information you have the more important the information you do have is. By example if the author never portrayed a character as weak or strong but gave a clear feat he accomplished that would require the character to be strong it would make sense to assume the character is strong despite not knowing how the author is going to portray him.(this pretty much never happens because it's hard to show a character doing something requiring a lot of power without portraying him as strong at the same time)
      The other reason it doesn't mean anything is that you're just predicting how strong a character will be...it's when you actually see their actions that you can judge if they live up to what the author described or not.
      "Luffy dodged a pacifista beam, that doesn't mean he is faster than light."
      Again, the world the author creates doesn't have to respect the exact physics of the real world but it has to establish it's physics and logic need to remain somewhat consistent.
      "but how a character is portrayed in the context of the series is equally as important."
      Let's say I wrote a story about a guy that can lift houses and outsmart Einstein but despite that I consistently portrayed that character as being weak/stupid even tough no one else is able to do those thing in the story. That would come off as a comedy because of how ridiculous it would be to genuinely write like that. And if for some reason you didn't think I was joking you would understand that this character is actually strong in the story even tough as a writer im insisting that he isn't. You would naturally value the reality of the story over the portrayal of the character.
      How the character is portrayed is important in predicting the future of the story and understanding the message of the story but it is not important in understanding the reality of the story.

    • @SilverRyuu
      @SilverRyuu Před 3 lety +1

      @@DIVAD291 The initial comment was about breaking feats down into a science. Writers aren't doing complex physics equations to determine exactly how strong a character needs to be to do a specific thing.
      Let me make a correction. Assuming good (or at least competent) writing, character portrayals are more important than feats. If they contradict, a problem arises, however if they don't portrayals are more important when determining how strong a character is. In fact, a character's feats are part of the way a character is portrayed. They aren't exclusive. If a character's feats and their portrayal contradict than that is simply a failure to portray the character in the way you want. If you portray a character as a genius but all their feats say otherwise than you're failing to portray the character properly. When feats are absent, or when feats and portrayals don't contradict, you rely on portrayals to have a grasp on the relations between characters. In the event that they do, that's a failure on the author's part.
      The biggest issue with feats (and with power scaling in general) is that not all feats are comparable. Feats give you a general idea of a character's strength and abilities, but things don't always go the way you expect. It's difficult to explain but let me give an example: If we look purely at strengths and weaknesses, as well as their physical abilities, than you could make the argument that Zoro should beat Luffy in a fight especially pre-gears. Physically they are comparable to one another but Zoro's swords give him the advantage since Luffy can't defend against them. However, we know that Luffy at the very least is equal or stronger than Zoro based on the way they are portrayed.

      Zoans are a bad matchup for Sanji, i had expectations on the destructive power with raid suit + diable but its just that he was impressive, but Page 1 is very tanky, he most likely used to be a captain, so we can't blame Sanji for not hurting him much. Best Matchup Against Zoans are swords and Oden proved that. Zoro woulda done much better than Sanji and I'm not a Zoro fanboy, its just that Matchups sometimes matter.

    I like that you brought up the difficulty of Luffy's fight against Rob Lucci compared to Zoro and Sanji's respective fights. I think it was only post time skip (Dressrosa) where we saw what looked like a significant gap between Luffy and Sanji against Doffy, and perhaps indirectly with Zoro briefly taking on Fujitora.
    With the exception of the Dressrosa saga (where Sanji wasn't present by the end of it) and similarly Skypea (where Sanji ran into the big bad early on), the power scaling dynamic got resolved back to default, which is like you said, Luffy greater or equal to Zoro and Zoro greater or equal to Sanji.
    Even though Sanji is supposedly "just the cook", he's much more than that, being the protege of "Red-Leg" Zeff who was a pirate captain, Sanji inherited his will of finding the All Blue as well as his skills. Sanji is someone who could have been a pirate captain himself, and the same is true for Zoro.
    This is what makes the Straw Hats stand above the other supernovae. And now if all goes well, they'll have Jinbe and Yamato up there as well... a truly monstrous crew :)
