  • At the dawn of Tunisian independence in 1957, there was a bitter power struggle between the country's monarch and its first president.
It was a "winner takes all" battle between Habib Bourguiba, leader of the Tunisian independence movement, and Lamine Bey, whose family had ruled the country for more than 250 years.
Through witness accounts - including frank testimony from 99-year-old Driss Guiga, the former national security director and a Bourguiba loyalist, and contributions from a direct descendent of the royal family - this film reveals how the monarch was deposed.

The man was too soft and as a result, he was overpowered by Bourguiba. In Morocco, the king was absolute and as a result, his children are still on the throne today.

Great documentary with great production value, I truly enjoyed learning about this phase of history however I couldn't help but noticed how the doc makers tried to infuse their pro-monarchy editorial view into the doc by using clever editing techniques, and carefully chosen commentators, just look at 24:26 for example and listen to the ominous soundtrack and the portrait they chose, all designed to push the impression of existing nefarious conspiratorial intentions to assassinate the nice and humble bey, when in reality as the doc shows, it was a mere power struggle and that Tunisians had welcomed the new republican era bc they simply didn’t care about the so called royal family. Rightfully so, bc monarchies are an archaic idea from the past and belong in museums at best. The beys were leftover artifacts from the Ottoman era. The producers tried their best to foster sympathies among the viewers for beys of Tunis with this documentary but as history shows, the Tunisian people themselves disagree with AJE, thankfully.

Change is not necessarily what is needed all the time. Scratch beneath the surface some. Consider UAE, Morocco, Qatar....... Then check the changed Arab countries. Are they any better for it? Look at even Russia(Soviet). Is it better after disposing the Czars? It is very debatable. Democracy is overated

I know very little about Tunisia and it's history. This was so educational. I learned so much.
I am a Republican in my country (UK), so it's interesting to see how the abolition of royal families happen in other nations. According to this film, the people were happy which is great. However, the Bey, his wife and family could still have been shown more decency at the end.

The Tunisian royals were the reasons of Ottoman and French colonization so it was normal once the people had their freedom to abolish them. Don't forget that the beginning of our history was with Carthage republic and the nationalist movement focalized a lot of their ideology on that.

bourguiba was the cause why ennahda was created (i hate them) and then ben ali freed them and even gave them gave them a unit in the BAT division and even some of his presidential guards were islamists and in 2011 the tunisians revolted to overthrow ben ali so they can stop corruption the country has been suffering but due to their bad luck they people even more (aka ennahda) who done the same thing ben ali and bourguiba did and in 2021 kais said closed the parliament and surrounded it with the military to end ennahda rule and he is now hunting them down
