  • This was set up by Adam Craig Outdoors who set up the bait and hosted my on his property. I discuss baiting practices and ethics as well as the reality wild animals for food.
    Adam Craig Outdoors: / @adamcraigoutdoors
    We baited with donuts, beaver carcasses, honey, kitchen scrapes, apples and whatever else we could find.
    We show how to do a honey burn.
    The bait was set up for 3 weeks and had one decent size bore coming into the bait for a few nights prior.

    Hunting is the ONLY ethical way to get meat, if people think just because they go to the supermarket to get their meat that they are exempt, they're not, your just paying someone to do it for you! I've heard black bear is delicious, keep em comin brother👍🏼

      No. Eating meat is not ethical unless your a scavenger.
      I don't get why people care about ethics. Maybe some people are so stupid they think they are better if they are ethical in some way.
      Ethics mean absolutely nothing in objective reality. Ethics is just a way for people to wave around their dicks saying who is better than someone else.

      BUSHCRAFTER 1973 I hate when people tell me hunting is so mean and cruel to the animals. when they get their meat from the grocery store where those animals where living in small quarters just waiting to get killed.

    • @jarilo8639
      @jarilo8639 Před 7 lety

      Explain how killing another conscious being for food is ethical? inb4 boars, bears, deer are not conscious
      And 'I will die if I don't kill it' is not an ethical answer either. If you applied it to humans it would be ethical for criminals to murder police officers for shit stupid laws that get people fined/thrown in prison. Mostly because defending yourself against unethical laws is by definition ethical.

    it's a real bummer that we were not able to connect on a bear. We all put a lot of effort into this, but i guess that is what hunting is all about. No guarantee's when out hunting, fishing, or trapping. I went out yesterday after work to have a look and the bait had not been hit. Thanks for coming up and sitting all those hours (20 plus hours) in the stand. We gave it a good go, and unfortunately, the out come was not what we had hoped for. But i had a good time all the same. It was fun to hang out with you and Jeremy around the fire.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  Před 7 lety +5

      Feel the same way. Real bummer because we all did a role and it should have come together. Ah well, we didn't come out with nothing, we still had the time together and learned a lot, especially a reminder that it's not a guarantee, not certainly just because you have a pile of bait. This video is really for all those people out there scared of bears and worried about being attacked and fish guts around camp and so forth. This is 3-4 weeks with just 2 or 4 days (depending on how you count it) where the bear came in. Couldn't imagine trying to do a spot and hunt, or do this primitively. If we were counting on a bear, we'd have to come up with a more ingenious plan.

    some people never grow out of what i think is a walt disney world and still see life as a half hour of cuddly wobbly playful animals who all eat make believe food and never harm or eat other animals, they don't see the hunger and suffering they go through in a sometime short and brutal lifespan. hunting over bait or not if it is done with clear respect of the animal with as little suffering as possible ,the gods of the hunt would approve
    enjoy and respect your videos

    I hunted spring bears in Ontario from '83 to '90 NE of Killarney and near Mactier (got three, 2 with bow). Short story is that if a bait was hit daily or almost daily, and the bear disappeared when a hunter was on the stand, the most likely culprit was the wind. We didn't want the wind blowing into the bush, from which the bear would come. One guide who paid attention to the wind had consistent success, and quickly. Another who ignored the wind would blame the hunters for being noisy. Wind usually changed direction frequently where I was, which made the proposition a bit more of a challenge. The best we could hope for is the wind would be consistent while we were in the tree. Stands 20 feet up helped a little, but if wind was on our side 12 feet high was enough. It is indeed vital to be dead quiet. Twice I saw, or heard, a bedded down bear stand up within 15 yards of the bait. They had been lying there quietly for at least two hours after I got in the tree stand. If I had even cleared my throat, they woulda spooked. You are correct that hunting bears in that area without a bait is pretty futile. I spent 21 days over two years hunting them on the ground with no bait, like I would hunt deer. Never saw one. I also agree failure comes with the territory. With a bow I didn't always get a clear shot and let them walk away. I like your video - even if we get skunked it's worth going!

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for sharing and you are completely right! A bears nose and hearing should not be underestimated. I just asked Adam, and the bait still hasn't been hit. So it was a one and done. I would guess that he got shot by someone else. Adam is going to ask around and see if there is any news. There is another bait about 15 miles down the road and I did hear at least 1 shot on the 3rd night but it was quite far away. Even if the bait was hit at night, it would have given us some clues as to what was going on...but again, that bear hasn't come back in over 2 weeks now and no one is back there behind the pond. Just bad luck I think. I'll for sure keep the wind in mind. I'd like to try again in the fall, now I have the itch!

    I know the feeling Chris, I was skunked on Turkey this year... only got out 4 times and of course hens were in punching distance but the Toms were too smart. That’s hunting though and I still enjoyed being out in nature. Hunting is not easy, and not cheap, but it’s by far the most sustainable and rewarding way to acquire meat. When I ran out of goose meat this winter I felt bad going to the store and buying chicken... I think our society often has it backwards, we should be shaming those who participate in factory farming, not those who lawfully harvest an animal from nature. It’s a difficult subject though because not everyone has the ability to participate in hunting and fishing.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  Před 7 lety +1

  • @restoreallthings1806
    @restoreallthings1806 Před 7 lety

    Good effort guys, I would think it wouldn't be too many more days before that bear was back. Do you gauge how much bait is available as to not fill up the bear? I'm sure like you were mentioning, range as well as other current foods available play a big part.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  Před 7 lety

      As of today, the bear is still not back, so could have been taken by another hunter, or even gone looking for a female to breed. I think it's 2 gallons of food per day or something like that. But it hadn't been back in 8 days from the last time to the end of my hunt and still not there, so something happened. If the bear was nocturnal, it's common practice to bring bait back with you...just this time, the bear disappeared. Just bad luck.

      With the right ammo, a 20 gauge can do a lot of things! They don't let us use rifles here in the South for deer, so I got this one, with 2 barrels, for shot and slugs. Works well, and I can change it up in less than a minute.

    What sort of rifle would you use on bears and what sized ammunition would you require to take one of the big beasties down? You'd pretty much want to dispatch it with a single clean shot or you would have up to 500 - 800 pounds of bone, muscle, claw and tooth bounding after you wanting to tear a limb or two off of you.
    Anyway, there's no such thing as original sin, it's a concept religious men came up with to make people feel ashamed for simply being human. Besides, if original sin existed the god character must be the most vile repulsive thing to ever exist, the Testaments could back me up on it.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  Před 6 lety

      Any slug will do, or a bow, compound. I've taken one down with a well placed shot. Black bears are timid and bolt, they don't usually stick around. I'm using a 20 ga with riffled barrel and slug...pretty easy to take down any big game with that. You could also use a riffle. Bears are usually around 150 lbs to 300, over 500 lbs would be nearing records.

    • @travisfisher5719
      @travisfisher5719 Před 6 lety
