Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

My biggest problem with this guy is that he seems to think that having simple answers to nuanced questions makes his stance superior when the only reason his answers are so simple is because he is appealing to magic, and so all complications can be swept under the umbrella of the “mysterious nature” of his god.... it’s the ultimate cop-out and I find it incredibly disingenuous for him to act as though that is a valid reason to justify actions when he is just going to throw the true burden of explanation onto his uninvestigable, unfalsifiable magic sky friend - who won’t bother to give any answers (let alone prove its own existence).

      @robmckennie4203 Před 6 lety +1

First of all, I was agreeing with your point dumbass, I was saying that Jeff Dee is far more famous than any of us will ever be.
Second, the TAE youtube channel may have 180k subscribers, but only a fraction of those people would be considered regular viewers. It seems that few of their videos even break 100k views, and any that do are almost certainly clips from the show and not the episodes themselves. I had a quick look, and I only found a single episode in the last 5 months that had more than 50k views, at 62k.
Third, maybe the anti-atheist commenter is right, maybe atheists *are* arrogant know-it-alls, way to prove them right.

Fact: Matt _did_ talk to the guy on several occasions, but what Hamish comes up with, remains _nothing but silly assumptions_ about _the kind of people_ we atheists must be (and stuff like that). I even heard a host of the AXP say once: _"I see here on the callers list, that Hamish is again waiting in line, and though I can hear you, fans of the show scream to the tv-screen to please DON'T let this guy on again, but lets hear what he's got this time..."_ (or words like that) after which he went off, spouting totally unfounded bullcrap again, and at the end of it, the host saying: _"maybe we indeed shouldn't let this guy waste our time anymore"_ . Those are the FACTS, mister Scotchman

I'm an intactivist. It's not anything to do with my atheism though. My objections are more based on bodily autonomy, male and female sexual pleasure, and I also agree that it is barbaric mutilation.
I can't agree with (I think it was Jamie) that it's a cosmetic issue when the foreskin serves a number of functions including sexual pleasure. As a female, I can't understand why a parent would chose to limit the sexual pleasure of both the male concerned and (if het) their future female partners, by changing the organ from one that rolls within itself into... more like a penis shaped rod.
More importantly than my own sexual pleasure, I have discussed with a number of males their own disappointment over having had this choice removed from them and some sad stories of their own negative complications - from purely sexual to serious medical problems. In two cases I know of, these problems have extended into necessitating multiple correctve surgeries.

Circumcision approved by the patient is not a moral issue because the pain, risks, outcomes, and aesthetic changes are in most cases understood and consented to by said patient. When circumcision is desired by the patient, it is neither a moral or immoral thing to go through with.
However, circumcision imposed on another person by a parent or guardian when the patient is an infant or otherwise incapable of giving consent, is both wholly immoral and unjustifiably barbaric.

If this guy that hamish is calling out is an aethist and that guy supports circumsision of a child then I would consider that action immoral because I dont think the Pros of circumsision are conclusive enough to have any endorsement of newborn circumcision.

Australian scientists may have solved one of the biggest mysteries in science: where do we come from?
The ground-breaking discovery published in the journal Nature on Tuesday reveals what scientists believe is the ancestral 'homeland' of human-beings. And they say the research has the potential to provide insights not only into our past, but into our future.
"Now, we can finally tell the story of us," said Professor Vanessa Hayes, the Sydney-based academic who led the study.
What does the new research tell us?
It is well-established among scientists that the history of modern humans can be traced to Africa. However, the new research shows humans do not originate from East Africa, as it was previously thought, but from Southern Africa.
Her team followed the trail of mitochondrial DNA, which is passed on unchanged from a mother to her child, with the hope of tracing the thread back to our earliest female ancestors.
That led her first to the Kalahari Desert, and then to the Khoesan (pronounced koh sahn) people, a group identified through their use of a clicking language.
"They represent a lineage that never left the homeland," Professor Hayes said.
The research combines a broad variety of knowledge and evidence to piece together a history of the first human begins.
"Instead of just releasing a paper with a whole bunch of data from one field of study, we could tell the story."
      Professor Hayes said.
She said one of the most exciting opportunities for science will be understanding who we are genetically in order to tackle disease.
"These are the people that represent the longest line of modern humans and therefore they are healthy because they've survived the longest," she said.
"To understand disease, we have to understand 'healthy' and the genomic definition of health."
Her research will focus particularly on prostate cancer.
"Prostate cancer has a strong link to Africa, so we need to understand the genetic link to Africa to understand more about these diseases and how they work in modern society."

I tend to think of circumcision as a cosmetic procedure if done on a baby, and as I recall, in WWII all US enlisted men were circumcised. To me, it's more like if you are and you have a son, do you want to have a "matching set" and avoid that "why does mine look different than yours?" question.

    • @advorak8529

Yes. HIV infection risk is much lower when condom use does not happen for some reason (be it cultural or religious or “just” no availability). Obviously(!) condoms (not condors, dear autodiscorrect) are way better, but you work with what you have to reduce the spreading of HIV.
Aesthetics (if with express wish of the person the foreskin is attached to).
Medical reasons like phimosis, infections, cancerous growths and so on exist.
Where washing under the foreskin is not possible (water access, taboo to touch yourself there, etc. it can increase the hygiene.
And there are ritual/religious reasons, which only make sense for those that follow them.
And then there is the American reason: you cannot masturbate. Well, this is of course male cattle excrement, of course you can, but presumably the guys back the who came up with that had a fetish-like fascination with other people masturbating but little knowledge or experience. Also Kellogg’s cornflakes were made with the explicit aim of eliminating masturbation, as that leads to and is the worst sin imaginable in his eyes. The guy stayed celibate even after marriage…
Note the guy was both a nutritionist and sexual advisor and it was in the 19th century.

Hamish is quite serious and not faking his ideas or his accent. I remember seeing Hamish during the Q&A session at the end of a talk that I saw on CZcams. This was years ago, and I cannot find the video again. The venue, as I remember it, was a large auditorium, possibly a university, after a talk or panel discussion by well-known atheists (Dawkins perhaps?). The talk was in the UK, possibly Scotland. Hamish was standing up at the microphone drawling out his question, and hitting the heathen with his best atomic-level gotcha. "Ah know whut Ah know whut Ah know...". Sorry that I cannot remember more details but I only made the Hamish connection after he rose to ridiculousness on the Atheist Experience.
If anyone out there knows this video could you please link it in a reply? Also, after listening to this video, does anyone else think that the police should be checking out Hamish's basement?
