  • Less pretty, more fast! The last Wipeout on a non-Sony platform, because I refuse to acknowledge the new phone game. No NeGcon required!

    For me, it's the best handling Wipeout in the series, it feels so rewarding when you get it right and hear "Perfect lap" at the end.

    Wipeout 64 was my very first Wipeout game, and is the one that got me into the series. I was a Nintendo kid, so I haven't really played any PlayStation games yet, in fact, I've played many other racing games on the N64, such as Destruction Derby 64, and Extreme-G, which I also enjoyed. If Wipeout 64 was never made, I probably would've never knew about the Wipeout series, lol. It just makes me really proud that Wipeout 64 exists. I still have many nostalgic memories of this game every time I come back to it.
    Wipeout is my favorite racing series of all time, and it will always ever be.

      I have to agree. I absolutely LOVE having a racing sim and playing the GRID, WRC, Forza/Forza Horizon, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars series. Still, nothing tops the Wipeout series for me. Such amazing games with extreme sense of speed and the combat is phenomenal!

    Happy to see WipEout 64 get some love. If I remember right in the lore, WipEout 64 takes place in 2098.
    WO64 is canon, too, as Sokana is mentioned in the lore of WipEout Fusion!
    And holy shit, you really DO get WipEout! You even pronounced NeGcon right!
    Consider me a fan of the channel, and I'm subscribing right freaking now!

    Psygnosis decided to copy-paste some tracks from the first and 2097 and made those mirrored with minor adjustments, example: Klies Bridge is actually Talon's Reach with a straight finish line and mirrored and Machaon II is Gare D'Europa but mirrored and the jump section is different.
    But atleast Velocitar was a original track...
    Qirex's super weapon, Power Snare actually damages opponents, but it is the weakest super weapon of the game. AG-Systems Shield Raider also drains opponents energy to 1%, which means a single bump would cause a elimination and Auricom's Energy Sphere dealt heavy damage instead of instant elimination

      Kiles Bridge ~ Talon's Reach
      Qoron IV ~ Altima VII
      Sokana ~ Korodera
      Dyroness ~ Karbonis V

      Velocitar is entirely original, though

    Always loved the Wipeout series. Playing Wipeout XL for the first time at 15 on the PS1 was the first time I felt like: This is the future of gaming. It was superb! Still play these with my son and still have an excellent time! Never got to play this entry as I didn't know it even existed. Definitely going to have to find a copy somewhere and play this soon! Thanks for the review!

  • @P-_-S
    @P-_-S Před rokem +5

    WOXL might be the most iconic of the series, and possibly still my favorite due to the nostalgia and soundtrack, but my god the controls and speed of this game just absolutely floored me when I finally got around to playing it. Very late n64 adopter, I think post-GameCube or at least very near the end of n64's life, and I bought this title used even later than that. I had always assumed it was just a port of the first two games and set my expectations accordingly. (Side note, interesting how Doom 64 was the same way and a brand new game that everyone always assumed was just a port of it's prior games and mostly written off).
    This game makes fantastic use of the X axis on your controller, prior games that was mostly only useful for handling on jumps, but in this game you can really pull through corners more by tilting back while turning at the same time, in effect significantly reducing the need to air brake on every corner. When you perfected it, it made you feel like you had precise control over a fined tuned Japanese sports car, versus the earlier titles where it felt more like you were taming the bucking bronco like nature of an American muscle car.

    Huge fan of the Wipeout series. I got beef with this one tho.. Most of other ones in the series I was able to complete/finish all the challenges. However, in this one, the AI opponents straight out CHEAT! In later challenges /races even thought I'd go through 3/4 of the race flawlessly and gain a decent lead in first place, out of the blue, a stream of 4-5 opponent AIs would zip past me, (even though I was going top speed with the fastest team) and then, even if I continued to play perfectly, I would not be able to place in the top 2 slots. This would happen consistently to the point where it became impossible to progress.. Huge bummer.

    My one gripe with WipEout 64: Kaze Emanuar wasn’t yet around to help with under-the-hood optimization.
    This game would also play well with one of Hori’s controllers, or one of the modern N64 controllers.
    Honestly, I wish the entire PS1 trilogy (the special edition in Wip3out’s case), WipEout 64, the extra songs from the other versions of each game, and the soundtrack CDs (which had exclusive music) would all be repackaged into a single remaster.

  • @M1XART
    @M1XART Před 5 měsíci

    The think the thing people nearly always ignore when comparing PSX into N64 is playcontrol/handling. -Everyone always talks just about graphics.
    I was really disapointed, when Wip3out for PSX had much inferior analog control than N64's Wipeout.
    But it's not just Wipeout, -it's huge difference on every game!
    Well, may be not on Ridge Racer Type 4, but SONY's 32bit machine was just not powerfull enough for proper analog control.
    And that is also the reason why Wipeout 64 remains my most played game on the series.
    Playstation has most solid games library out there, but at the end, playcontrol is what makes or breaks game(s).

  • @calebhonegger3787

    It's very funny you speak so highly of the tracks being new and differently designed for speed and smoothness instead of tricks and punishment - because (almost) all of the WO64 tracks are mirror image copies of tracks from Wipeout 1 and Wipeout 2097/XL, with a few adjustments (like no split sections). It's a wonder how having different sightlines and an entirely different handling model completely changes the feel of a track to the point you don't recognize it!

    Definitely so much more than just some quick-n-dirty cash-in on 2097. I can't say it's *as* good as the PS1 games (at least compared to 2097 and 3), but it shouldn't be overlooked. Also, I appreciate that Psygnosis put this game out the exact same year as Nintendo put out F-Zero X; it takes real balls to take your previously PS1-exclusive game and bring it over to the competition just as they're putting out one of *their* big exclusive racing games.
    And of course we've got the bitchin' soundtrack. Not quite on the level of the PS1 games but no less worth a listen.

    Nintendo getting the weaker port was not a good comment. Nowadays, it is, but considering you're talking about the N64 here, adding this comment didn't make a lot sense, since the N64 usually had the far superior ports of PS1. Wipeout 64 wasn't an exception back then, it was the rule. Later, with the GC, that also was true. Only when Nintendo starting releasing weaker hardware, the ports started also getting weaker, for obvious reasons.
