I like games without stories

  • This is an opinionated video, a bit personal to give you some insight on how I feel about videogames, and how I don't really care if they have a story to tell or not, in fact, I don't really care about a games story at all basically. Is the game fun? Yes? Then why care? I know that the story is there to support the world building and yadda yadda yadda, are you really reading this description right now???
    Anyways, I believe that it's not always important for games to have a detailed and expansive story for them to be interesting, fun, or deep. I think that mechanics alone can make a videogame really fun and enjoyable alone, after all, it wouldn't be a game if it was all video! (Those are called movies and films!) It's not like I don't ask questions about the games I don't know the stories of though. Questions like, "Why is Blanka green? No seriously why is this guy green?" or "If Dracula is just gonna come back after I expire, why should I care?" Just the basics behind the games I suppose.

    I grew up playing video games in the 90's-00's too. It was before I could read so naturally I had no clue what the story was lol. I learned to press the things that looked familiar. It wasn't until a few years ago I started really wanting more story out of my games. As much as I love sandbox games and especially when I was younger (im looking at you minecraft). Now a-days they, or I, feel too aimless to play them. Its almost like I feel guilty for wasting my time. Great vid!

    A story is nice but from time to time I just want to play a game. No moral dilemma no saving some one and if you didn't you are bad just let me play.

      Thats me, with my busy life, between making my living and making videos, I just like games where I can drop in and drop out at any time, no save points to worry about, no story to keep up with. Just some playtime.

    I can't think of anything new to say (I like both games with and without stories), so I'll just say I like how well-edited and written your video is!

    This is why I love games such as Minecraft, Terraria or even ROBLOX. They don't have stories and you're free to just go wherever you want. At best, the stories they tell are implied through Bosses or Item Descriptions.

    I agree.
    While there have been games throughout the years where the story has enthralled me....I just like the gameplay and multiplayer lol
    I try to get into an RPG every few years....but if the story starts to take too much time, I just give up.

    As an adult i drift more towards multiplayer games, but I feel it's because I work and don't have the time to commit to a good story and explore every nook and cranny of a new world. I like both a lot though. I like game.

    For me it was twilight princess, that was my skyrim before skyrim game, i put so many hours into that game discovering everything. that said i think i play mostly non story games these days with only a few exceptions.

    I feel the same way, but i still play and enjoy plenty of single player games. If you want me to enjoy your story, earn it. Use the interactive medium to tell an interactive story, not a movie script. Don't just shove cut scenes in my face.

    • @KageNage
      @KageNage  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Some games would be better off if they showed me and not told me. Also, unskipable cutscenes make me sad.

    As someone who, as a kid loved Final Fantasy, but didn't actually know anything (at all) about any of the stories until like 5ish years ago; I relate hard to this. Loved me some Castlevania, FF, Elder Scrolls; as a kid, but I never, ever, read or cared about the story lol, it was all game. It has certainly influenced what I actually enjoy doing in modern games and I really had not thought about it until watching this randomly suggested YT video. Ironically now that I am a busy adult with less time, I find myself REALLY wanting to play big story-driven games (because everyone says they are the best, right??) yet keep falling back to "storyless" games to fill most of my free time, lol. idk, good vid, makes me wonder how the people who grew up on these games, who are making them now, will push the industry. We saw a lot of the people who grew up on cinema make the games of the 00s and 10s, which results in a lot of "cinematic" feeling games.

    Gaming seems to be heading to this direction again, if you have to cut something to make making games cheaper and faster, excess story is a good start.

      There was a video I watched once, it was something along the lines of, "we don't have middle of the road video games anymore" meaning that every game has to be a 'AAA hit' with millions of dollars in production and share holders backing it or its some indy title made by one guy with a passion. The video was mainly talking about games like "ATV Offroad Fury 2" for PS2. Times are changing, thanks for your input
