Vagrant Story it's maybe the most advance game in it's generation, surprisingly still an underrated one

One of my favorite games ever!
Man.... As someone that's been playing and loving RPGs since the master system i cannot get on with vagrant story, I feel like I'm missing something but I've tried so many times
I personally prefer *Threads of Fate* due to the bubbly "Anime" look & brighter color palette. *Legend of Mana & Chrono Cross* were also AMAZING. 4 FIRE PS1 RPGs from Square between 1998-2000!
I'd call $80 not underrated :(

The PS1 was truly a golden age in gaming for RPGs. As an honorable mention, have you played the Action RPG dungeon crawler side mode from Ehrgeiz? Still to this day don't know why it was included on that disc, but it was addictive and deeper than you'd expect.
Yeah, square was on fire in those days. They had the midas touch. I'm not the biggest square soft fan, but I think I love 98% of things they released from that time. I loved Ehrgeiz's dungeon mode and still think fondly of it.
It was a hidden gem. It was brutal and the setting was cold and Erie.

Alundra's difficulty was due to Working Design's tendency of making games they localized harder.
There's a hack that reverts the difficulty back to what it was in the original Japanese version.
Great list and yea, Musashi deserves a remake with tight camera controls! What a gem that would be. Chocobo dungeon 2 is such a deep game, from those Shiren origins, and I really love how it uses those systems with Final Fantasy mobs, its great. Star Ocean 2 though, is my goat for action RPG on PS1, such a fantastic game.

Vagrant Story is the best game in the PS1. Even with 1 disc it is jam-packed with content that could even rival a 4 disc jrpg. I wish, there is a remake or a sequel before i disintegrate in this lifetime.
I'd forgotten about Dragon Valour! I remember playing a demo of it and really wanted to play the full game. I will be checking it out for sure. Another awesome video..
I always felt like Parasite Eve peaked with the first game. I love resident evil but PE 2 was way to much like it and should have kept it’s RPG routes.
Man, most of these passed me by. Once you mentioned Alundra, some old memory sparked my mind. Of them all, that one is one I meant to get around too, because, although I found the design style a little goofy, I did enjoy that it seemed like the next Secret of Mana or Illusion of Gaia.
Yeah, Vagrant Story never did it for me, but my buddy loved it.
Course, I loathed FF8, so there ya go :D

Great choices, especially the last one. If I may add one of my favorite series on the PS1 is the Colony War series. I remember I would spend many nights with the lights out just playing the games just to make it more atmospheric
Oh man, I’ve been really meaning to play through both Mega Man Legends 2 and Parasite Eve 2. I played and beat both of their predecessors, and loved them. Dragon Valor looks really cool! The #1 choice is a perfect choice too. Awesome video as always man! Easily one of the best channels on CZcams!

Legends 2 is required to understand the full story of the world. It's really cool and definitely worth it for that alone but the gameplay improvements REALLY make it worth it

finally i have found someone who finds PE2 an awesome game...thank you sir... because im a PE2 Fanboy...this is my dream game if ever i will gonna have a PS1 back then year 2000's...im just watching my friends with Ps1 playing it... nevertheless... that word "AWESOME" makes me happy that youve enjoyed both PE1 and PE2...

I love the MegaMan Legends Series it's just Awesome! I only hope they release MegaMan Legends 3 to give the series a good ending. Fingers crossed 🤞

I only bought Kings Field recently, and the series instantly became one of my favorite of all time.
As a guy who is trying to get into RPG, Brave Fencer Musashi looks like a very fun game, i might give it a try in the future.
Well worth it?
It's fun, interesting and the humor is cheeky.

3:30 That's not true. Parasite Eve was received well both critically and commercially, and sold just under two million units while the sequel barely broke half of that and was heavily criticized at the time for the gameplay changes. The reason the sequel shifted it's design is because it was originally conceived as a spin-off title, and had the head writer/co-director from the original Resident Evil working on it (as well as several other former Capcom employees).
It wasn't a bad game, though I'll forever be salty that the first one didn't get a PAL release...

I have to disagree about the visuals for the original Mega Man Legends. In my opinion it looked fantastic. I didn't really have a problem with the gameplay. It isn't perfect, but to me it is a fantastic game for the PS1.

The nostalgia is strong with this video. If only the entire PS1 to PS3 library would get a full rerelease on PSN. Sony could learn a lot from Valve.

Alundra is such a amazing game. The story, the characters and the music are just too good. I no longer have my physical version. But the game is challenging and I did quit the game for a bit. Memoires are unlocked and now I wanna play again

Actually finally went back to and finished Vagrant Story late last year after starting it when it came out and getting burned out by a late game boss. Knew id get round to it one day even though it took over 20 years lol so 2 years longer than it took me to return to mario lost levels and finish that. Good game but I did not like the box puzzles much.
Have both the first Parasite Eve and the second one on the Vita, the first one is better in the story department, character development, and some of the science behind the game. Heck, even the game play is good because it is unique.
Never heard of Dragon Valor. I'm going to have to check it out. Great Video!

Mega Man Legends 2 I've only played a little bit of as a kid, and unfortunately I bought myself a copy when it was more expensive lol! Fun times overall. Same with King's Field, though I don't own a copy myself and am more familiar with Dark Souls and all that, played it first on emulator. Star Ocean I enjoyed as well though I played the PSP version. Now I'm a late bloomer with Dragon Valor lol I first played it on emulator and then bought a copy for myself! Very fun game. Same situation as Alundra lol another game I got into late. Brave Fencer Musashi I've only played the demo of, but I enjoyed it. Symphony of the Night I only know passively when I watched one of my best friends play through the whole game at my house. Seemed fun. Great list! I would have added Tales of Destiny II/Eternia myself, but that's because it's my favorite Tales of game lol!

Loved this list! So nice to see kingsfiel! but i think kigsfield 2 (3 in jp) and shadow tower are so much better than kingsfield 1 (2 in jp)
A lot of A+ PS1 games. I'm a Musashi zealot for sure. Shame they went a completely different direction with the PS2 game. Really would have enjoyed seeing Brave Fencer Musashi refined and fleshed out in a true sequel.

Star Ocean the Second Story's a fantastic journey with great music and likeable characters... it did get a remaster on the PSP enhancing various things alongside the first game... But unlike the first game's remaster, the second game for some reason never got a rerelease on the Switch yet...

Not a huge turn base RPG fan, but I loved Parasite Eve 1. I never knew about a PE 2 until a few months ago. Might have to boot up and load my Retroid Pocket with both games.
Dragon's Valor was really cool! Could never bring myself to finish it for some reason though, can't remember.
Gave Brave Fencer two chances actually, just felt underwhelming to me and couldn't get into it.
I haven't played a lot of action RPGs on PS1 it was mostly turn-based ones but from what I remember playing it was Diablo 2, Alundra 2, Parasite Eve 2, Tales of Destiny 2 and some Diablo clone called Techomage or something.

Nice video, Sotn was such a great game. They truly haven't made a better Castlevania, in my opinion . I know Diabo 1 is better on pc, but that is one arpg I suggest any gamer to play.

CSOTN is one of if not THE best ps1 game you will ever play its replay value is quite impressive as well. When you beat the game you are actually only HALF WAY through the entire content of the game! :o it will eat hours upon hours of your life at a time and keep you coming back for more. Symphony of the night is absolutely a timeless classic.

King’s Field looked like it had bad draw distance and slower than hell, I’m surprised to hear so much praise about its world when it’s so dark and can’t see much (really awesome video! Other games looked a lot better to me)

Every time I see or play Brave Fencer Musashi, it makes me sad to think about how the PS2 sequel turned out. The sequel isn't a bad game per se, but it lacks any of the fun and charm seen in the PS1 original..

Not a popular opinion BUT Alundra 2 is also an amazing Action RPG! ( Yes i know it's not like the first one but doesn't change how fun and great it is)
i finally found someone who finds Alundra 2 also a great game... thank you sir!! Alundra 2 was the first Alundra game i have played and i really enjoyed it...some puzzles are hard to figure out when i played it back when i was in highschool...around 2000's..

OH!!!! thanks sir for some nice Parasite Eve 2 stuff..im PE2 FANBOY as always...so much memories back 2000's....and for Alundra...ive been playing for this game some time last year...all i can say and agreed with you..its really a good game but BRUTALLY DIFFICULT HAHAHA...im still stuck at the Desert Temple..WOW!!! i notice some little touch of Musashi 2 BGM for the previous one but Bro!! i missed Brave Fencer...such a good game...i wish Square continued this game...PS2 has a long time span they could have at least created 2 more Musashi Games...they only prioritized Final Fantasy... i still remember the lines of Musashi on the PS1... "SHOOT!!! WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS?..WHAT THE HECK?.." Anyways... NICE VIDEO SIR!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! 👌👌👌👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤

If you want to pick Star Ocean 2 , choose the second evolution on the PSP . It has updated voice acting that's much better than the voices in the PSX version

I was hooked to the first parasite eve with the story.
I couldn't get past the tutorial of the second game. It was just too different and not like what I liked about the first game.
But I will give it another shot.
Blood Omen should definetly have been on this list, 2nd only to the mighty sotn imo...
After 10 long years looking for this damn game I found the name of this bastard, Dragon Valor the name, my god, and everyone I asked couldn't describe what this game was... I can sleep in peace now

Funny you have Parasite Eve II on this list, I hear it gets thrashed to hell n back.
If there is part 2 of this, i would probably add Legend Of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, and Suikoden 2.
And none of them are action rpgs.
@@hououinkyouma8255 oops my bad😅, confused it with just must haves. I guess from what I experience probably Tales of Phantasia and Soul of Samurai, though legaia is kind of an action after you proceed with the attack selections but thats just me imo.
I can't tell you how many people on Reddit have told me that Symphony of the night is overrated and I can't tell you how much I genuinely dont give a fuck about their opinions. It feels soooo tight for a PS1 game.
The first mistake would be listening to people on Reddit, that place is a minefield 😅
Now days every game that isn't a racing or fighting game is an open world RPG. The boundaries between genres have been deeply blurred.

Chocobo Dungeon is not Action RPG, because its completely turn-based. All enemies wait patiently, until you finish your turn.
I really wish that some day FROM did another first person RPG.... they did some "ninja" games and mecha so why not that?
Might add Crusader of Might&Magic which felt better than PC version. They are so different they're almost completely different games....

I don't consider Vagrant Story an action rpg as it pauses on every battle for inputs. It's exactly like the Fallout3 VATS system.
