I have been addicted to this movie for such a long time. As far as Westerns go it is one of the classics.
You know even after 81 years it still packs a punch and has aged very well. Definitely a great Western film.
Claire Trevor was such a magníficent actress. She deserved so much more recognition.
The cast is superb but Thomas Mitchell (one of the greatest character actors ever) easily steals the show in a hilarious and moving performance! You can see why he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this!
1939 was a big year for him. Look at all the classics he was in that year with "Stagecoach": "Gone with the Wind", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"... he was such a great actor.

@Mister Jorrox this is not true...maybe not a great actor or person...but john wayne was a movie star who did make some fine films....the quiet man..the searchers..3 godfathers....for example...and he certainly was a much better actor than most in his westerns

81 years after it was made, and it still warrants respect, and awe for its cast and director. They don't make them like this any more too bad.

Beginning of John Wayne n John Ford collaboration.Great western movie to watch even today.Still looks fresh.One of the finest western movie directed by Ford followed by My Darling Clementine,The Searchers n Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance.
Possibly left unsaid is the magnificent cinematography in this movie. The panoramas of Monument Valley and the incredible sky with the clouds squeeze every day last bit of drama out of the black and white film. Absolutely breathtaking!
Cinematography is spectacular, although maybe they shouldn't have kept repeatedly riding in circles around Monument Valley.

Thomas Mitchell ‘steals’ the film with his superb characterisation of the ‘bibulous’ doctor. Indeed, in my opinion, Mitchell was dominant in the scenes within the stage coach, the saloon scene, as well as the finale! The twinkle in his eye, his roguish smile, his charm and his courage when warning off Luke Plummer from a gunfight. Doc Boone became an unlikely, roguish hero in the eyes of the audience.
He really did have the most important role. Priceless.
I came here to comment the exact same thing you so perfectly stated here already. I mean Doc Boone is out here buck wild drunk as a skunk trying to outrun an Apache attack. Along the way he manages to deliver a baby and save the life of his new best friend after he gets hit with an arrow. Doc Boone was a straight up G!

My late husband and I watched John Wayne movies together. I feel close to him watching this excellent movie again.
Let’s it forget the daring and inimitable Yakima Canutt who stunt doubled for John Wayne and others in this film. That scene under the stage coach is unbelievable!

Yakama Canutt went on to choreograph many great stunts including the chariot race in Ben Hur!
True. It's hard to dispute that he's is one of the things that makes this film so great. John Wayne later said his on screen character was deeply inspired by Canutt's mannerisms.
I just love this movie. Everything is natural and eventful. I used to watch John Wayne,s movies back home , he introduced America to the other countries. My respect for him is endless.
Want to know why a John Ford western was so great? Watch this one and it will tell you everything. Plot rides along with the same pace as a striding horse. Plenty of action but with a good storyline. Great back drops, but the best thing of all are the characters. Every one different, someone that we can each relate to in some way. These characters are not shallow or plastic. None look theyve just preened themselves after leaving their cars in the Hollywood parking lot. These are REAL men and women. A master class in how to develop characters. A typical John Ford trait.
One of the best westerns ever made. Love the story, characters, and the ending is pure gold.

A wonderful piece of film making that still holds up today. I never get tired of this movie. It is a great mix of story, characters and scenery. The later remake has nothing on this. A masterpiece.
Beautiful theme music, in addition to the participation of John Ford and John Wayne who made this film uniquely invaluable! Bless your souls you great ones!
I loved watching John Carradine as the ‘southern gambler.’ His accent was totally convincing. Yes, he played a rogue but a ‘gentleman’ rogue. He had a long film career, featuring in many excellent movies over the years. Carradine was a wonderful character actor.
John Carridine was one of the finest character actors in supporting roles in over 300 films.
What an actor. Very handsome in his younger days. The whole Carradine clan was magic.
I can’t stop watching the honest interplay between the real life personalities on the stagecoach has never been equaled even in a psychological analysis!
Al Meggs Now go see 1984s the Breakfast club one of the greatest films of the 80s. You might see the same thing!.
That's why I liked this better than so many other Westerns - the character studies, people under stress eventually getting along.

I was so inspired when I heard the bugle playing and the troops riding in to the stagecoach's rescue , makes me feel so proud , I know the feeling I was in the Marine Corp. in Afghanistan, and did a full two tours (8 years) for my country that I love so much 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

This timeless classic Western has a profound romantic element as well.
This western movie is the example that led onto influence a lot of the best pictures to come ahead of its days. Simply the greatest!

With its magnifi-glorious cinematography and vistas of Monument National, to die for. And the acting is top notch. A true American masterpiece!

I'm in my late sixties and that's the best western movie I've seen...never had a chance to see it before although I knew of it...John Wayne, the cast, the storyline all excellent. And superb stunt riding by Yak Canutt. The movie was made eighty years ago...but it has aged exceedingly well...

This flick is grand. It's my favorite movie of all time. Used to be on TV, often enough, and if scenes haven't been cut out - because drama unfolds to fury with an happy ending, viewers will see one of the best movies ever made!!

One of the all time classic westerns directed by the brilliant John Ford. Great acting performances from John Wayne, Thomas Mitchell as the drunken doctor and John Carradine as the southern gambler. I also much enjoyed the performance of Andy Devine as ‘Buck.’ This film stands the test of time!

John Wayne with John Carradine here in 1939 then John Wayne with Robert Carradine in 1972 - The Cowboys - the bookends of Waynes best acting.
This movie brought out the best in every actor involved because of the director.Everything this director ever made is TOP NOTCH.The man that did the screenplay was also no slouch!!The script was absolutely BRILLIANT!!
Been watching this movie since I came to the U.S. in 1958, age 12. It was great then and great now. I love seeing what this country looked like in the wild west.

@@kennarajora6532 I was born in Durness, Scotland. My parents were killed in Ireland fighting with the Irish for their freedom. The British started looking for me and anyone else associated with my parents. It was 1957. I was just shy of 12. I learned about "guilt by association". Not for anything I did, but for who I was. I had never been away from Durness, never even saw a gun or knew anyone who was "active". Friends saw to it I was put on a ship and sent to America to live with people who knew my family. I grew up in the U.S. I served in the USMC. I served over two and a half years in Vietnam until I was seriously wounded and sent home for discharge. My wife carol and I have been married for 58 years. I know nothing of Durness. Don't know about family or friends that might still exist. I am an American.
@@glenmcgregor3366 That's quite a full life you've led. It's really sad to hear what happened to your parents, but it's good to see that everything worked out well in the end. My grandpa also fought in Vietnam, but he passed away in 2018 from cancer. He used to love westerns, he's the one who introduced me to Stagecoach.
Every character played was outstanding. Even the bar keep.

That's only 14years from now.
This film was a masterpiece. Showing the greatest attention to detail. In the proper lighting. To illuminate faces properly. Without shadowing. Or glowing from over lighting. Black and White film were 100 times more difficult to light properly and effectively. John Pappy Ford understood all these facts.!!!!!
Great lighting and cinematography. Both required a lok of skill and work when filming in black and white. Casablanca is another fine film with great lighting and cinematography.

I think RED RIVER is generally considered to be the 'quintessential' western.

Just saw this movie yesterday and instantly fell in love with it. Love the cast and the action sequences. The stunts that did with the horses is just intense. You couldn't pay me to due something like that.
Timeless masterpiece.

@@Justin.Martyr the gambler was killed by a bullet from an attacking Apache. The gambler was going to use his last bullet to kill the cavalry officer's wife to prevent her from being captured by the Apaches.
He felt a quick death for her was more merciful than being raped and tortured and eventually murdered.
@@Justin.Martyr It's difficult to understand the scene without reading the original novel of this movie. In fact, the gambler was once a Major of the Confederate Army and was from the well-known Greenfield family. He fought as a subordinate of Lucy's father, the head of the Mallory family, also a well-known family, and became a gambler at the same time as the defeat of the Confederate States of America. He had heard from Lucy's father that he had a daughter during the Civil War. But Lucy didn't know him. Over time, he discovers that the woman passing by in front of the cafe is Lucy, the daughter of a former superior, and asks her sheriff to ride her stagecoach to protect her. The film doesn't tell these facts, making the scene difficult to understand.

Fun movie to watch I had not seen Andy Divine since the 1950s, and this was John Wayne's first big hit. The movie Quality is excellent for being about 70 years old, good to see some of the older actors, brings back memories.

Shame he didn't join up & fight WW2 rather than feathering his own nest whilst the likes of James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Clark Cable & many more did serve. Stewart flew over 20 missions in Germany. Wayne said he did apply but his letter must of got lost.. I think his all American hero & his Republican right was to compensate what he knew he had done. Stewart never bragged or sought any fame for his bravery & was friends with Wayne. Even the viewers just don't like too see Wayne a coward & fake hero & resist the view but it's fact. While the others spent 3yrs fighting, Wayne then really established himself building his films & was top dog when his fellow actor names returned. Clever & venal.

This was the first John Wayne movie I saw,after that I followed his career till he passed away,some odd forty years later.He played everything and every body and did it well.
One of my favorite movies is "The Quiet Man". I read that it was John Wayne's favorite of all his movies.

Watching a John Wayne western from 1935 called The Dawn Rider... comparing that film to this film is like comparing Stone Age Technology to the cellphone technology of today the change in sound, cinematography, and music soundtrack is that dramatic. The first movie I will not bother to watch all the way through, this movie is one of the great classics!
Saw a ranch house burnin' last night...
I watched 20 of his 1930s westerns in the past two weeks. Yeah, there is a quite noticeable difference in the production quality of those versus this one. I guess this is what you get when John Ford gets involved.
I have seen this film many times and still enjoy it like the first time. The first of the epic westerns!

I think Claire Trevor was just adorable in this film. She was 29 at this time. And did anyone else notice she got top billing? This is a Claire Trevor movie, with John Wayne in it.
Hard to believe that up until this movie Wayne was still basically a nobody.
Duke should have won an Oscar for his role in red river. Don't make them like they used to.what a pleasure to see these classics again.
