  • One of America's greatest highways is barely visible from the ground. It's only from the air that you can pick out the remains of the Oregon Trail.

In the 70s I was a traveling salesman and always stopped when I saw a historical marker. Saw one in Nebraska that said something to the effect of "200 yards from here is the Oregon Trail". So climbed the barbed wire fence in my suit and tie and took off on a hike.
Not only was it still there but the ruts were so dominant I'm sure they're still there. Looking either way it could be seen as far as one could see.
    It was a stunning sight.

As a pioneer gazes at the colossal chimney rock, he feels a certain peace with himself. Every time he comes across one of the great landmarks, he knows that he is part of a much larger world. However, his moment of peace is suddenly cut with the knife of fear, as he looks in horror at clouds in the distance. He know what is coming.
    "Stormy weather. Lose 2 days."
    "Ma is bitten by snake."
    "Ma dies by snake bite."

Just imagine the true sense of peace you get while traveling through these empty plains, the cool breeze you'd feel, and the stunning landscape you would see. I would have loved to travel the Oregon Trail. This makes me want to learn the deepest history of America.

@@runcornbalsall130 well I've heard 3 different things. Like you said natural erosion, lightning and people shooting it with high power rifles. I hope that last part isn't true but people always find spent brass around the base. I think probably all 3 have something to do with it. The chimney used to be twice as tall. Google pictures of it and you'll see.

When you think wagon you should picture a rectangle shaped wagon that is small. About 4 x 6 ft with smaller wheels. Not enough room to ride in so most walked. So small they could barely fit the food they needed to bring and maybe a couple household belongings. Most did Not have the canvas coverings and definitely no horses. Alot were pulled by oxen, or mules, or even dogs. Yep dogs! At least 30,000 people of all ages died on the trail and were left on the trail. Some thrown on the side of the road and left before they even died. Too many people unclean and spreading germs and some died of malnutrition or exhaustion. Remember they couldn't ride the wagons because they were too small, no shocks, too much weight for mule or dogs,. So they literally walked for 20 milez a day and in the process they starved to death or just couldn't walk anymore and they literally left them.
