My grand mother was from Dingle, and my mum learned this word from her and we always used it when talking to our cat, although it became slightly anglacised by then to 'pushkin'. My gran was of a generation where they were scolded for speaking in Irish so lost a lot of her fluency. So much so that when she decided on a career change to be a primary school teacher, my uncle had to coach her to pass the irish exam!
