    The 1UZ falling flat on it's face upon acceleration is probably related to the ECU.
    The LS400 is well known for having capacitor issues in the ECU, replace the caps and it should be all good.
    Thumbs up so you don't throw parts at it

    Very nice! Old Toy straight axles are cool as hell, especially with a big V8 in them. I had a 79 I bought in 81 stationed in Arizona. That thing went anywhere I pointed it...not fast but it got there. Loved that truck! Vent the hood to let that hot air you feel when you open it out. The easier it is for the air under the hood to get out the easier it is for cool outside air to go through the radiator. If you don't want to cut your hood space the back at the hinges up a bit and remove the cowl to hood rubber bulb seal. You would be amazed how much hot air comes out of that gap. My Grand Cherokee with the V8 stuffed in it runs cooler with its hood gapped and the AC works better as well.

    Hi mate, I also have a 1uz swapped 3rd Gen Surf/4Runner. I have a huge aluminium radiator, that seems to work fine. Outside of using a snorkel, there are mixed reviews about water-proofing that motor. Some say you need to water-proof the 2 distributors and the rocker covers, while others say you need not. Have you done any of this, or are you going to? I guess it only matters for river crossings.

    I have a 1uz swapped 2wd same model. bought the ute already swapped in 2013 but when I got it, it had same issue as yours. Running warm and dropping / or bogging out at high revs. After many months of tinkering and trying to diagnose I figured out the inside of the fuel tank was rusty and the pump was not allowing enough fuel through. Flow at idle was fine at around 120 litters/min and pressure was 42psi. But when I removed the tank and replaced it with a fuel cell and 044 style external pump, now fuel pressure is around 50-55 psi and it revs out fine with no hesitation and engine temps have reduced considerably. Running lean and fuel starvation was causing excess heat and possibly I think ECU was restricting engine revs?? took me a lot of chasing to figure this one out so hopefully I might save you some time. good luck with the build and look forward to the next vid. Regards Luke

  • @Bill-v650
    @Bill-v650 Před 3 lety

    In my experience aluminum block engines just seem to exchange more heat to the air than iron blocks so that may be causing what you experience raising the hood.
    The falling flat on it's face when you floor it may be due to fuel starvation. Which fuel pump are you using? A V6 one? If so it may be because it can't supply enough fuel, try one of the v8 ones.

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  Před 3 lety

      Good to know! And I'm using the v6 one, but lots of other guys are running the stock V6 pump without issues. I'll be looking more into this later.

  • @michaelatkin2562
    @michaelatkin2562 Před 3 lety

    I commented on your other video. You need a mechanical fan and shroud to keep the 1UZ cool. Take the standard Toyota clutch fan and remove the clutch. Make an adaptor to fit the fan directly to the water pump pulley. Its just a circular plate with 2 sets of bolts holes, inner and outer.

    • @DirtGarage
      @DirtGarage  Před 3 lety

      The water pump pully is under the timing cover, and runs off the timing belt. If there was room I would be running a mechanical fan. I can't even fit a electric fan in pull setup on the inside of the bay.
