Small River Catfishing - Catching a BIG Channel Catfish from the Bank

  • I have been bank fishing small rivers for channel catfish since I started fishing. My first fish was a channel catfish caught from the bank of the same river featured in this episode. The difference: the catfish I caught in this video was far bigger than that first channel catfish I caught while bank fishing years ago! Recently, I have changed my catfishing tactics which has resulted in catching many more big catfish. However, it is still tons of fun to go back to where it all started; on the bank of a small river soaking a bait until a catfish bites.

Good luck! It’s been a steeper learning curve for me than first expected, but hopefully video quality is slowly improving. Reach out if you have questions.

I love fishing rivers. I have no boat so thats where my best fishing comes. Most folks will fish off bridges & that is good too but its popular. If u take the trek down the river a ways, you can find some great watering holes full of fish that no one goes to.

I agree. It’s one of my favorite ways to fish!

@fishstandard I have a question, I am relatively new to catfishing and have trouble finding spots. I live around mostly farmland and that's where the river runs. Is it okay for me to find an entrance to the river through a field if it doesn't have a "no trespassing" sign?

Depends on the access laws in your state. In Kansas (where I am located) you must have landowner permission to enter private property whether the land is posted or not. Additionally, nearly every river and stream in Kansas is privately owned. We are required to obtain permission from landowners on both sides of the river/stream before floating/wading. The exceptions are the Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri rivers which are open to the public up to the high water mark on either side. However, landowner permission is still required to cross private property to access these rivers. The good news is it is not very difficult to obtain permission to access rivers/streams for fishing. You should be able to find out what the access laws are in your state by reviewing your fishing regulations and/or contacting your local conservation officer. Even if your local river is privately owned, I would encourage you to go knock some doors or make a few phone calls. Landowners are often willing to grant access to these types of waters, and some excellent fishing can be had on these smaller waterways.

@@fishstandard as much as it sucks, it's understandable. We have private property for reasons obviously. Better to just ask so you can keep going to the spots versus trying to dodge cops & landowners just to eventually get kicked out.

I caught a 27 pound channel 15 years ago in a private lake I snuck into lol. Weighed it twice and both times came out to 27.3 and 27.1. So I just called it 27 pounds. I was 15 at the time and have only caught one cat bigger than that. That was a 31 pound flat head in a small river like this in Arkansas

This one is obviously nowhere near that big, but a nice cat for the water nonetheless. Thanks for watching!

Not this large. I usually release my catch, but if I do keep any I want them much smaller than this. I do know many people that keep everything they catch, including large fish like the one in this video. They usually batter and fry them.

@@fishstandard Me too. I throw back the monster for someone else to enjoy catching especially in our local ponds. The smaller ones do taste better. Thanks!
