    Nick, I can confirm the active braking does work, it saved my life on the M6 last November coming back from Scotland, I was tired and had cruse control on at 70mph and yes I got complacent and nodded off how long for I have no idea, but all i rember is that the car rapid bleeping which woke me foot on the brake but the car was like that's not enough took over and brought my C Class to a stop behind a stationary artic lorry. so for me the brand Mercedes-Benz is everything to me.... thank you for the video i learnt something new also and I thought I knew my car.... x

      It came on with me as well, understandably but unnecessarily: I approached a T junction on a bend to turn left, there was a car in front turning right, my MB thought I was going into the right turning car and the active breaking assist slowed me rapidly but as I steered to the left of the car in front, my MB released the brakes. It was a wonderful moment, perfectly safe but informed me that the systems really work.

      Only if you have a distance button on the steering wheel, it’ll look a bit like this: moba.i.mercedes-benz.com/baix/cars/222.0_comand_2017/en_GB/page/ID_c212e8d62a45abd4354ae36578c644e8-1b2bdbb4beb1df13354ae3657040a481-en-GB.html#
      Hope the link works, it’s from Google of the image of the buttons. It’ll be No 2 in the pic.

      Totally agree! I was in a similar situation where an old lady cut right in front of me going at 50 MPH. She must have been driving at 25 MPH. The driver assistance system took over control from me and brought my Mercedes to a complete stop. My SUV shook like a deck of cards but everyone on board was fine. The following day I took the vehicle in for check up and everything was ok.

    Active braking definitely works on my 2020 B class. Had a couple of occasions reversing out of my drive and it slammed on the brakes even though I was about 2m from the road and doing about 1mph. It just saw cars on the road and slams the brakes on. Now I make sure to slowly stop right on the edge of my drive and it’s fine.
    As for the driving package I couldn’t live without it on the motorway, just adds that bit of reassurance to driving. And the stop start in traffic is a blessing, don’t have to touch the brake pedal. Great for the m25 jams.

    I have most of these features on my Mercedes and I can confirm that they all work perfectly, namely the safety features like the emergency auto break and lane assist, it’s really good.
    The blind spot assist is such an underrated feature, it’s my favorite and one of the most useful features that you can get, I’d even say that it should be mandatory on every new car by the regulations.
    Great job.

    Hi Nick, re active brake assist. Must admit I was a little bit sceptical, so decided to try it out without risk to life or limb or more importantly to my Merc. I devised a little test. I went to a couple of local supermarkets and scrounged cardboard boxes. I then assembled a cardboard box wall in the road outside my house, fortunately I live in a small cul de sac, so little inconvenience was caused. By this time several neighbours wondering what I was up to where put in the picture. I tested up to 28mph (couldn't really go much faster because it's a small cul de sac) . Brake assist worked brilliantly, neighbours really impressed so much so that two with BMW's and one with a Range Rover tested theirs with positive results. Unfortunately a Nissan wiped the wall out and ended Day 1 of testing. Hope this helps.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 3 měsíci

      Haha that’s brilliant! I would love to try something out like that, I have a few ideas for a future video in an entertaining way!
      I should add that it does take a few seconds of driving for the car to calibrate its surroundings.
      I remember watching another manufacturer test this out with an exec or a CEO in front of news and media….let’s just say it didn’t go very well 😅
      But yes it’s a brilliant system!

    Good video and well explained! I had a proper driver assist experience today in a 280 mile drive on my 2024 GLC 300. Very much impressed with its capabilities!
    While I was attentive, the driver assist practically drove the car itself through the highway making turns and managing speed itself.
    One feature to note is that the car will also automatically change lanes to choose the right lane to keep up the speed. It will tell you visually and with a beep that it’s about to make a lane change. But while doing so it detects traffic behind and only change lane when it’s clear ! It did this throughout and I remained in a cautious supervisory mode and let the car do the job ! Simply Awesome !

    Great video Nick. You missed one feature. When in active cruise control on suburban streets and with navigation active, when approaching the planned left or right suburban street that the nav wants you to take, if you indicate the car will slow sufficiently for you to take that turn, and then re-accelerate once on the other side. Another method to ensure you turn at the correct street. Australian spec eqe.

      @@npoleary Im sorry if you mentioned this and I missed it, but I noticed you said u have to steer, but in my experience, activating dynamic cruise control makes you able to not touch anything at all, The brakes and gas are autonomous like you said, but also ur wheel, it keeps you dead-centre of the lane, and u just have to hold the wheel as a precaution in case something happens, but u dont have to keep steering, it auto steers for you (activating indication left or right will make the car change lane while keeping dynamic cruise control)

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hey Kanoo. 🤓
      Yes Active Steering Assist does "steer for you" but I want to make it fundamentally clear to all that these are aids. Each car manufacturer will implement their own version of tech and it'll be slightly different to the next one, where they have each have different limitations. I would hate for someone to tell me that they've crashed a car because they thought it was autonomous when it very clearly is not.

      Well as far as I’ve on Mercedes cars, if a car has it then it’s enabled by default.

    HI Nick and thank you so much for the very detailed video.
    One question: in the new C43 (W206) I am seeing online some cars that have the “car distance button” on the steering wheel which would indicate they are equipped with a Driving Assistance Package. However, when I contacted the Mercedes dealers, they are saying to me that the cars, do NOT come with driving assistance and you cannot activate it.
    Is this true that MB has this preinstalled from the factory but they don’t offer this feature?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před měsícem

      Thank you! I’ve heard that some models come through now with a button that lets you add one element of the driving assistance package for either a monthly price or yearly. One huge point with this specifically is that it’s a fraction of the cost of the driving assistance package
      I plan to make a video on that soon

    I purchased a USA-spec 2020 GLC 300 4Matic Coupe (AMG Line) in Nov2023 with < 11K miles on the clock. Having the DA, Parking Asst & Multimedia Pkg were required in my purchase decision.
    Having just turned 60 years old, I wanted the DA particularly as a driving nanny. It works wonderfully! I've just completed a 3,500+ mile trip from Chicago, IL to Phoenix, AZ and back. They worked well for me & made me a better (safer) driver than without them.
    Despite my wife's fear of them (she'd exhort me to "Drive the car yourself!"), I was impressed with how well the DA tools/features worked to aid me with the long drive. It's a shame she's (perhaps willfully) confused driver's *Assistance* aids with autonomous vehicles (such as the Waymo Jaguar taxis driving all over Phoenix).

    Hi Nick, is there an option to set how aggressive the acceleration is for ACC? For example, I'm set on 130 km/h, I approach a truck that is overtaking another truck with 90 km/h. The car slows and keeps the distance, but as soon as the truck changes lanes, my car will accelerate too aggressive back to 130. It downshifts a gear or two in the process and it feels like it gives at least 50% throttle. I would like to tone it down a bit, because if I need faster acceleration I can always use the pedal. The sudden acceleration sometimes scares the passengers which are not paying attention on the road. This happens in comfort mode which, in my opinion, should be smoother. GLC 300 (2020).

    Great coverage of that specific package on the 2024 S Class 580E. These days it seems like a new car is actually about twenty cars in one, the engine, drive train and all mechanics first, then the interiors, and ... the computer! Getting a feel for the driving capabilities and handling - like an "ordinary" car - is pretty easy, but learning to use the computer is not so simple. And the manuals are not the easiest to follow. Looking to buy a Mercedes, it's very helpful to know which "package" does what. I'm very happy that Mercedes puts the cruise control on the steering wheel where it's right at the driver's fingertips.

      I thought the active blind spot assist was in another package. I would want that specific feature. I wasn't aware it was part of the the driving assistance package. After watching some videos about driving on the autobahn, I'm wondering that German cars do not have a warning that a Ferrari is approaching from behind at 300 kph. I guess it's just too far back down the road to look, to be accurate, but if you're doing 70 mph and a Continental (or whatever) is approaching at 140 mph ....

    I would definitely need a good driving assistant in any car with the steering wheel on the wrong side. 😉
    On a more serious note, most of the things ( that you explain excellently btw) my 8 years old BMW can do too.
    It won’t automatically adjust the driving speed to the speed limit but instead it wants you to confirm it. I’d prefer it would do that automatically (especially when the speed limit is reduced) but it’s the choice BMW has made.
    The active cruise control also doesn’t adapt to the driving mode you’re in.
    It can do automatic lane changes and it will keep an eye on you etc.
    Final note: BMW will warn you if you change lane without using the indicator by means of vibrations through the steering wheel. I thinks that’s more pleasant and effective than beeps or lights.

      So I purchased my car last year from my local dealer and it seems that since I’ve bought my car Mercedes have almost started to fit like a “mini driving assistance package” on some models of car now available to purchase after you take delivery.
      You’ll have to check with them to be sure but I’d love to do some research on it.
      The Driving Assistance Package is always around £1,700 to over £2,000 from what I’ve seen but on some models now you can pay afterwards to get the main feature of that package for a whole lot less.
      I’ve seen it here on the the Mercedes me store: shop.mercedes-benz.com/en-gb/connect/pdp/active-distance-assist-distronic/553
      I wish I had this on my car but it’s not compatible but that’s so cool that you can get the main feature for a whole lot less cost.

If you engage cruise while in any degree of traffic, it will manage the following distance to the vehicle in front of you. Hi Nick, short remark to what you've said at around 15:16 min into the video. There is a Level 3 system available in some models such as S-Class ans EQS. It only works on pre-defined motorways under certain conditions. It allows you to for example use your phone while the car is driving for you (that is actually also allowed in countries where this Level 3 system is certified). The time you have to take control back is much longer compared to a Level 2 system,
    What you've seen about the parking garages is actually a Level 4 system, which doesn't require a human in the car. But I believe there's less then a handful of parking garages in the world equipped with the necessary hardware for this particular system.

    I optioned the driving assistance pack on my 2018 E class (which I still have) and this is basically the same system, so hasn't changed much in 6 years. It all does work well most of the time, but has it's limitations. It doesn't work well on the motorway in heavy, slow moving traffic as it's a bit slow to react to constant speed changes. Also the steering assist doesn't work in rain, although the speed distance feature works fine. Lane keeping assist is a bit of an annoyance. It works by following the lines on the road. So if you are on a motorway, in roadworks for e.g. and you pass over a bit of road with a white line in the wrong place it will try to follow it and veer you into another lane or panic break. That can be a bit unnerving! It will also overreact and panic on A and B roads and suddenly try and steer the car in the wrong direction, particularly if you cut corners. I just keep that function switched off most of the time.
    A great safety feature of the system is the blind spot alert. It has saved me a few times from changing lanes if I've not been concentrating and you really can't miss the alarm warning and tug on the steering wheel. Again, it has it's limitations and doesn't always pick up vehicles at an angle, for e.g. if you are entering a motorway from the slip road.
    Something not mentioned here, that also comes with the package, is sensors that warn you (again quite loudly!) if you try to pull out of a blind junction and there is a car coming. It works also at the rear of the car if you are reversing out of a parking space and there is a car coming, or a pedestrian walking past that isn't picked up in the reversing camera. Most cars don't have this available on the rear of the car. Overall I'm very pleased I optioned it. It cost me £1600 at the time and has probably saved me from a serious accident a few times, and soothed many a long journey, so money well spent. Unfortunately most people never option this system (even on the S class, where unbelievably it's not standard) so finding a second hand car with this feature is virtually impossible, which is why I've kept my car for so long!

    While using Distronic plus in a S580 (2024) my car slows down as i approach a very slow car in front of me. Question I have is how does the car behind me know that I am slowing down if my car brakes are not applied and brake light do not come on? Is it not dangerous? Hope someone has a answer. Thank you.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 8 dny

      So in Mercedes if ANY system slows you down more than engine braking so:
      - Using the Limiter (and it slows you down)
      - Using DISTRONIC (slowing down again)
      - Brake Recuperation for hybrids and EV’s
      - Emergency Braking systems
      You will always have brake lights come on, brake lights are linked to the car slowing down more than normal, not just the pedal 🤓
      There’s probably more examples but if it’s anything more than normal braking, the lights come on.
      Hope that helps!

    Perhaps you can confirm if the 2024 Mercedes fixes an Active Lane Keeping "problem" I have with my 2020 US spec S-450. Specifically, my car cannot detect hands on wheel unless I physically jiggle the wheel at regular intervals to avoid the hands-off warning. Having to constantly jiggle the wheel even if I have hands on the wheel is quite annoying. Did Mercedes come up with a better hand detection scheme for 2024?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 3 měsíci

      The steering wheel is different now, I believe it uses sensors on the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock position.
      I believe it was something to do with a United Nations Regulation (UN R-79) that changed where and how these sensors needed to be. A simple touch or holding the wheel should be enough now 🤓

    Can vouch for the performance and usefulness of that emergency braking system. Was driving around Frankfurt, crossing a seemingly clear, pedestrian crossing. A punk on an e-scooter crossed, at speed as I was entering the crossing. I had not seen him at all when the car snatched the brakes on and just about stood on its nose. Car saved that kid's life. He probably would have been mashed. This was a reminder of how dangerous crossings are. even at 25kph. The scooter was going almost 20kph. It's just not possible to see that, even as you set off from standstill. Crosswalks should be on foot, at walking pace. anything else is going to get someone mashed. Also, the Germans are super afraid of scooters and bicycles as their riders seem to not give way to cars at all. Riding out from footpaths, across streets without looking. On another test drive, of an EV, the supervisor was basically out the window, every time we did a short turn (right turn, europe), to make sure there were no small wheels, coming to get us!! He had been broadsided by a cyclist on another occasion. These safety packages, when used respectfully, are really saving lives and money.

If the coolant is low, it will tell you. If the hood or bonnet is not firmly closed, it will tell you. If the brakes are too low, it will tell you. It will tell you not to forget your car keys. @MrMoo272 Před 2 měsíci +1

    its a bit disappointing to see these systems so aggressively regulated, my 2018 e-class will change lanes and let you remove your hands from the steering wheel for quite a length of time. It gives an initially visual warning on the dash and then after another while, it will give another warning and start beeping, getting more aggressive if I don't touch the wheel until finally, it slows me to a stop and grasses me in to the Mercedes sos system (I haven't took it this far by the way).
    Also, there is a system you missed I believe and that is cross-traffic assist where it will stop you pulling out of a T junction if there's something coming that you haven't seen but the car has, I've never seen it in action myself but I have had the emergency stop activate, it was unnecessary as I was in control but better safe than sorry I suppose.
    I understand, Mercedes are working on a new "drive pilot" system which will be level 3 automation on the steering and pedals, allowing you to remove your hands for a very long time providing it doesn't get regulated into oblivion.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 2 měsíci

      I understand for regulations and sadly it’ll be no different to air traffic control in years to come. If we have automated cars rolling around everywhere with the option for manual control those manual controls will be so restricted!
      Regulations are good for a number of things, each manufacturer will implement their own way of tech into a car, one will have certain limitations to another which for an owner, you might not know how far the system will go before it gives up.
      So I completely understand the need for laws and regs but they do get in the way of cars and them being fun though! 😅

    Hi Nick, What happens if you become unconscious and sos comes on? Since you obviously cant reply will they know your location?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes so I did try to replicate that but I needed to be on a road with white lines and/or a car in front so wasn’t easy for me to do on a public road without a car coming up behind me.
      So if you become unconscious, the car will first ask you to put your hands on the wheel, then it’ll beep at you, starting flashing then it’ll start taking over.
      First it’ll start to reduce speed, put hazards on at the same time and bring the car to a stop. It’ll notify the SOS team (same as the red button at the top). This tells them where you are, how many people are in the car, the direction of travel, what system called the SOS and the type of car you have 🤓

    I drive this Merc and it’s the first thing I do once I have started the ignition, turn this bloody dangerous ‘ package ‘ off ! The danger in my opinion is the active brake assist.. everything demonstrated here is true and correct but you might ask what happens if your overtaken and then the driver changes lane pulling in front of you and as many drivers tend to they pull in front of you much too close for comfort and watch what happens then . It can also become somewhat dangerous and very annoying when driving in city traffic. The braking is far too sensitive and extreme! 😤

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Před 3 měsíci

      So I purposely didn’t demonstrate any of these features in the city especially Active Distance Assist Distronic as it is not designed to be used there or not suitable.
      There are loads of safety functions of this package that will extend to city or town driving like blind spot assist or active brake assist or even lane keeping assist above certain speeds.
      But Active Distance Assist Distronic should really only be used on dual carriageways or motorways where I showcased on the video. The system will not be fast enough to react in for example London in the central part with people weaving in and out scrambling to get metres ahead of you.
