Holy Crap! I have that exact, exact buffet. My parents bought it in the 60s. We have pondered how to update it. Yes, I think those handles are outdated.

The hardware stains perphaps were not stains but protected from the sun. Maybe the rest of the drawer was stained.??

Thanks for the cleaning tip for the stencil. I always use a paper towel to remove most of the paint from your stencil brush so you don't get to much paint and it leaks under stencil ruining you design. Love this piece of furniture!
I had a piece the other week that had the etched online of hardware also. I was whitewashing too. How I got it out completely was put a very wet handtowel over it and use a hot iron and iron over it. It raised the etch completely up than i put some citristrip on it rubbed steel wool over and it came completely off. Just in case there's a next time thought I'd share. Lovely piece.
The way that stencil lined up with the pulls was spot on! Another great combo.
