My question is out of left field; I’m in love with Jacobean crewel and am becoming acquainted with all things Jacobean. I have two books on the Bayeaux Tapestry, and after a little research into these books my question is this: How did they put the pattern on the fabric of the tapestry? We have oodles of ways of transferring patterns and designs onto fabric nowadays, but they couldn’t just pull out a pencil or pen and draw. I’ve looked at closeup photos of the “Tapestry”, but could see no evidence of drawing. Can anyone at the Royal School of Needlework answer my question? It’s really bothering me not to know. Thank you.

I love Jacobean needlework. I’d do this class but I’m allergic to wool. Is there a synthetic thread that gives the same look?

The kit comes with wool threads but you could use linen threads as they have a similar texture.
