  • The dollar tree has upped their game when it comes to fun and educational children's gifts. I was able to get everything I needed for four Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes at the Dollar Tree for less than $100. This year's pickup week is Nov. 16-20.

I love how you intentionally save throughout the year to fund this. I feel like God sees and honors that faithfulness. Also I am always AMAZED at how much you fit in your boxes.

I normally do about 10 boxes each year and I often have extra items. What a glorious idea to take it to the drop off location for those less than full boxes. I shop year round (being retired I have nothing else to do...hahaha.), and save so much money by shopping sales. I also look through thrift stores like Goodwill etc. because they will often have new items for sale on the cheap (just the other day I found Beanie Babies new). During after school sales I get the crayons, pencil pouches, pencils etc. Love the idea you gave of looking through the party section and splitting up the goodies. I always add in extra toothbrushes. The one thing I make sure to add is a reusable carry bag, the kind you carry groceries etc. in. This way they have to transport all their goodies as well as have it for school etc. I buy them after the various holidays so I can usually get them for about .15 cents each. Love your videos and your heart for helping others. Have a glorious day.

I love the idea of bringing whatever doesn’t fit to the drop off location for less stuffed boxes. I didn’t realize you can do that! You got some great stuff. Love to see how genuinely happy you are to do these

My box this year is for a small girl. In it is...a toy dinosaur, a washable face mask, bamboo cutlery, a washable sandwich bag, a washable snack bag, a colouring book, crayons, a washing, soap in a soap box, toothbrush, facecloth, a slinky, drawing paper, coloured paper, a pencil case with fabric pens that she can colour in, wash and then colour again, a pencil, an eraser, a drawstring bag, which is folded flat so it will fit in the box, but is big enough to fit the entire box contents into (over here we are instructed to use cardboard shoeboxes like from a shoe store, and I don't trust them to last long to store stuff in a potentially far from ideal environment), a little plushie bear...I don't remember what else.

My kids love those little extra sketches! They definitely are pretty good quality for a dollar. We had grabbed a couple when doing a road trip to hand out prizes every half hour/hour so the kids had something to look forward to. Nice and quiet for that option as well. Great idea for the shoe boxes also would make a great stocking stuffer... Or to donate to an organization that does stuff like that locally too!

Anytime I've done it I've included bouncy balls. Large (maybe golf ball size?) and small(just larger than a marble). When I was a kid I had so much fun with just a bouncy ball. Larger ones here great for catch or for bouncing off a wall and the small ones are great for bouncing really high and chasing.

This is a great video with good ideas for OCC shoe boxes. Caution!!!!Before packing your shoe box with an Etch a Sketch please test the Etch a Sketch 1st. Some of the cheaper ones do not work! 😰They are garbage. I threw all the first ones I had purchased away. Another store had some small Etch a Sketch which cost a small amount more so I bought one and tested it before buying more. The 2nd Etch a Sketch worked just fine so I bought 5. 👍😁The same thing happened with harmonicas! 😰Would you please test inexpensive toys before putting them in your OCC shoebox.🤔

We are all about OCC shoeboxes but I think I'm done with breakable throwaway garbage stuff even if it means sending less. I am going to try to focus on making it about them and not how great I feel sending sooooo many things.

Yes! Every year when I drop mine off, the lady says "can I have a look?" And I say "you can, but fair warning, you might find it hard to get it all back in!". My box bulges in all directions and is held closed by an elastic band.

I loved your video Sara!! I do OCC every year too : ) Thanks for sharing because it gives me ideas on what to get. I wanted to say that sometimes throughout the year I was able to get some stuff really really cheap at walmart on clearance after holidays such as Valentines, Easter, and last year after Christmas I'm talking like stuff for .10 cents, a quarter, and .50 cents. I put these things in a bin and when its time to do the boxes you have almost everything to fill them. Oh yeah, you can get school supplies really cheap in July and August too.

Oh wow, you did great. I do a lot of the things you do with shoebox shopping and making the most of the space. If you haven't dropped them off yet, maybe you can slip a washable face mask into each box too. Also, please consider making your girl boxes sometimes for non-girly girls. The girly stuff is super cute, and so the majority of people who make shoeboxes will buy them for that reason, but not all girls will enjoy that stuff. Lots will, but some won't. Xxxx

This is a wonderful thing to do !!! Are you asked To prepare different things for boys and girls? I would tend to prefer unisex boxes, since any child could like any color or toy. It would be a pity to gift our occidental stereotypes along with the box. You will make 4 children (and their family) so happy, congratulations !

Also a yo-yo, a water bottle, socks, a hat, hair clips and hair elastics, a tangle toy and a colours and shapes snap card game....and it turns out there is still some space in there, so am now trying to think of and source more things. Ideas welcome for a 2-4 year old girl.

A bit of food for thought: some of these people might be underprivileged because your tax money pay for exploitation or even wars in their countries. Love your content and the intention is great but things like fast fashion and cheap dollar store products contribute to exploitation and pollution of already poor countries.
