  • RTÉ News announces the death of the much-loved former news correspondent and documentary maker Charlie Bird. From Sandymount in Dublin, Bird spent nearly 40 years working at RTÉ, becoming one of the most recognisable faces on Irish television, before retiring in 2012.
    In October 2021, Bird announced that he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease after experiencing problems with his voice. On 2nd April 2022, Bird and a host of other Irish celebrities took part in the "Climb for Charlie" on Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, which eventually raised over €3 million for charity.
    Bird died peacefully at his home in County Wicklow on 11th March 2024, aged 74.
