Wow, Paolo Conte! You are picking the very best of Italian music! In Conte the lyrics are particularly important, he is a kind of poet. To get the mood of this song you have to think of poor peasants and hard rural life. Maybe the closest thing in American culture is John Steinbeck novels: The Grapes of Wrath and stuff like that. Red Devil was Giovanni Gerbi, an old racing cyclist of the beginning of '900, which grew up in that country environment.
I feel inspired for a translation and a comment of this song.
    RED DEVIL
    Those little blonde girls
With those little rings in their ears,
All brides who will give birth
    To men big as trees.
And when you will try to convince them
Then you'll see they are really made of wood. [

Diavolo Rosso (Red Devil) was the nickname of Giovanni Gerbi (20 May 1885 - 6 May 1955), an Italian cyclist. That nickname was due to his typical red shirt which reflected his attitude ready for the challenge, of those who never give up. A legend tells that during a race he frightened a priest: seeing that red cyclist throw havoc by breaking into a procession on his bike, he exclaimed: "who is that devil?". (Sorry for my bad english).

Hey Ang, Paolo Conte is my absolute jam. No doubt he is as far from rock/metal as he could possibly be, so hat off to you for dedicating one of your video to him and for appreciating his music. That said, missing entirely the lyrics is particularly crippling with this artist: imagine trying to make sense of a Bob Dylan's or Leonard Cohen's song without understanding the words, in term of complexity we are in that ball park. So, I hope a bit of context and my translation could help you a bit in that sense.
The song is about Giovanni Gerbi, a professional cyclist active in the early '900 nicknamed "Diavolo Rosso" (Red Devil). Just like Paolo Conte, he was born and raised in Asti (Piedmont), and the song both celebrates him and the city as it was in those old times: still very rural, and surrounded by paddy fields.
    RED DEVIL
    Those blonde little girls
With those little hoops on their earlobes
They’ll all be brides who’ll give birth
To men as big as trees
And when you’ll try to reason with them
You’ll see they’re indeed made of wood
    Red Devil
    Forget the road
    Come with us
    To drink some orange juice
[But] In backlight the whole time
    He runs away
    Look at the longest nights
Of this North-West adorned with stars
    And the wagons’ trails
    Icy as the Frenchmen’s gaze
A waltz of wind and straws
    The rural Death
That arises from the paddy fields
    Croaking like a frog
    And swiftly
It lands on the white farmyards
    Like reapers for hire
Voices, more voices from the sun
More abysses of lights from this countryside
And [more abysses] of land and soul
Nothing more than horses and quinine
    Voices, hotels’ rumours:
    Lovers from this great plain
    Queens of couriers and curbstones
    Their discretion is old fashion
    It’s water and honey.
    Red Devil
    Forget the road
    Come with us
    To drink some orange juice
[But] In backlight the whole time
    He runs away
    The fireflies spin
In the wheels of the night
This darkness smells like hay and distant shores
And this song maybe tastes like ratafia’ [Piedmont traditional liqueur].

The solos sound like Yiddish music.
The song tells of an Italian cyclist, nicknamed Red Devil, who, during a race, crosses a small town in the Italian province when a procession was held for the feast of the patron saint.
For me this is one of the best live versions of this song.
Paolo Conte wrote for several interpreters of Italian music, especially in his youth, unforgettable Azzurro sung by Adriano Celentano, Genova per noi. He has always claimed to stop his musical passion in the twenties of the last century.
If I can afford to recommend some songs I would not leave out Boogie, Come dì and, in order not to disappoint anyone, Via con me.
In addition to the plan, Paolo likes to get angry, ironically, on his kazoo.
Then what about the instrumentalists, the impassive drummer Daniele di Gregorio and the unstoppable guitarist Daniele Dall'Olmo.

Diavolo Rosso is dedicated to Giovanni Gerbi, a cyclist active in the early 1900s. The song is a kind of sung film, the obsessive and obstinate rhythmic base is like the pedaling cadence, the text describes what he might have seen crossing the land of north west Italy, the crossing of the plain is seen as a day that opens at dawn and closes at sunset. The passage of the cyclist somehow "breaks" the ordinary life of the people, who return relentlessly as soon as the race is over (the slowing of the pace at the end) We can also see it as a metaphor of modernity that breaks into an ancient and immobile peasant world, and/or of the awareness of an adult who goes through the certainties of his childhood. The literary form of the text is elegantly complex even for a native italian (as I am), google translator does not fully grasp all the nuances.

Angelo, these days your hair looks funny, you look like Mattia Binotto (Ferrari TP :DDD
Talking about movies many Paolo Conte songs have been included in American movies soundtracks, the most famous and most used "Via con me" (away with me) czcams.com/video/4SwBLKr742k/video.html
BTW have you been watching the Tarantino movie Django Unchained? The only original song in the movie was composed by Ennio Morricone together with Elisa who also wrote and sang the song. The track in the movie is the actual demo Elisa recorded at her place since Tarantino preferred it to the finished polished track that was submitted for the movie. czcams.com/video/6APGb9z2BPI/video.html

Hi Ang! Another Italian singer you should react is Zucchero. He's a bluesman and had an international success. He also made several collaborations with stars like Queen (he also sang at the concert dedicated to Freddie Mercury after his death), Eric Clapton, Miles Davis, Dolores O'Riordan, Paul Young, Bono (U2), Pavarotti and others. The English version of one of his songs is in the soundtrack of an American movie.
    Some songs to suggest are:
    - Madre dolcissima
    - Il volo
    - Senza una donna
    - Menta e rosmarino
    - Diamante
    - Con le mani
    - Miserere
    - Così celeste
    - Dopo di noi

Congratulation. I love Vasco Rossi, Pino Daniele ( napolitan language).. In Italy there is great musical history.. Especially Napoli. The Beatles also wrote the greatest hits by copying Neapolitan melodies

I'm not a fan of Paolo Conte, i'm too linked to the 70' rock.
In any case, here you have a taste of typical popular Mediterranean music, with some arab influenced sounds and a hint of gypsy.
The use of manouches guitars, clarinet, violin and accordion is not an accident.

Arab influences? Are you drunk? Popular mediterranean music? It was Jazz and sinti music roots, where is the mediterranean apart from the presence of italian musicians?
